Jesus confronted the Pharisees in some of the strongest conversations recorded in the Gospels, yet His purpose was never hatred.

That is worth understanding.

When Jesus saw suffering, He moved toward it.

When He encountered people carrying shame, He often treated them with remarkable dignity.

When someone needed mercy, He did not begin by asking whether that person had earned it.

Yet when religious pride caused people to overlook compassion, Jesus challenged it directly.

Consider the Sabbath.

A man needed healing, but people were watching Jesus to see whether He would violate their understanding of religious practice.

Jesus saw something different.

He saw the man.

That difference sits at the heart of this talk.

Faith should help us see people more clearly—not make us less sensitive to their pain.

Jesus also confronted traditions when people elevated those traditions above the deeper purposes of God. He challenged outward righteousness that hid inward pride. He entered the Temple and confronted what had happened to a sacred place of worship.

None of this made Jesus less loving.

Sometimes love comforts.

Sometimes love forgives.

Sometimes love sits beside somebody who is hurting.

And sometimes love says, “This is not right.”

The challenge is learning how to do that without allowing righteous conviction to become personal arrogance.

That is where Jesus leads us somewhere deeper.

Instead of only examining the religious leaders He confronted, we can examine ourselves.

Where have I allowed being right to become more important than being loving?

Where have I judged someone without knowing what they are carrying?

Where do I need more mercy?

Where do I need courage?

Where do I need forgiveness?

Following Jesus means allowing those questions to reach us personally.

If religious pressure, judgment, disappointment, anxiety, or difficult experiences with Christians have left you spiritually tired, I hope you will give Jesus another look.

The Jesus of the Gospels is strong without being cruel, compassionate without abandoning truth, and courageous without losing love.

That combination still has something to teach us.
