00:00When I watched a monster movie, the big money shot for me was a monster.
00:28And in Japanese kaiju films, that's what it was about.
00:35That word kaiju means monster in Japanese.
00:40The kaiju is a classic Japanese genre.
00:45Giant beasts and monsters that have all kinds of different characteristics and shapes and sizes.
00:52Kaijus in Japan have many, many forms.
00:56And we wanted to stick to the basic groups of kaijus that would be based on life forms that exist on Earth.
01:04We tried to echo real animals.
01:07So we tried to echo a gorilla.
01:10We tried to echo a shark.
01:12If you can imagine a crocodile and a lizard.
01:15Okay.
01:16Well, a lizard is the dinosaur.
01:19And the crocodile is the kaiju.
01:20Huge, grotesque, much more fierce.
01:27They're just as good in water as they are in lands.
01:30They'll dive under the water and come up and break the ship in half.
01:33It's pretty brutal.
01:34The moment you saw them on the screen the first time, you knew that they were deadly.
01:42They were capable of destroying the Jäger.
01:44One of the rules I gave to the kaiju designers is I wanted to think how a man in a suit would fit in there.
01:57The kaijus are trying to honor the spirit and the feeling of the classical kaiju.
02:03We are keeping them mostly two-legged, not humanoid, but sort of a silhouette that reminds you of those classical ones.
02:12And every week we would do an American Idol.
02:14Once we liked the kaiju and we logged into it, we would eliminate silhouettes.
02:19The first way you can do scale is context.
02:27Within the kaiju itself, the texturing, when you go close, you see what looks like a scale.
02:34And then you go closer and there's a bunch of bumps and cracks that give you the scale.
02:39If you do a close-up in a six-foot, seven-foot, eight-foot tall monster, you know, you never get that close.
02:45You never get the sense of texture that you get with a kaiju.
02:49I think you're certainly going to look at Guillermo's kaiju and say they're pretty damn cool.
02:58There's something very pure and very full of love in monster movies, even more so in kaiju movies.
03:06You just love the creatures.
03:08This movie speaks to the kid in me in a way that no other movie I've ever made does.
