The body of Darwin resident, Sean Cole, was recovered on Monday (August 26) from the Mary River in Australia's Northern Territory after he was taken by a crocodile on Saturday (August 24).

Cole, 26, was celebrating a friend's 30th birthday at the Mary River Wilderness Retreat, about 110 kilometres from Darwin, when he and a friend decided to go swimming, local media reported.

"They let their guard down, you know, they're having fun and something and let their guard down do something they wouldn't normally do and in that particular location it's a pretty tragic situation," said crocodile expert, Graham Webb.

Cole's friend managed to swim safely to shore.

Australian media reported that people witnessed the five metre (16 feet) crocodile snatch Cole and swim away with his body in its jaws.

The Mary River is reported to have one of the highest density of saltwater crocodiles in the world.
