00:30Robert, thank you so much for talking to us today.
00:32Thanks for having me, this is pretty cool.
00:34So, a lot of fans want to know, and I want to know, why is this not a story about
00:39Rick from the comic books?
00:41Well, I mean, The Walking Dead universe is a thing where, you know, you see Rick's story, you know,
00:46and you've seen pretty much every minute of Rick's story.
00:49And I don't think, the way the show works is we're changing things up, so you're seeing a different Rick
00:55story.
00:55But this game is very much set in the universe of the comic book series.
01:00And if you were playing with Rick, you would basically be doing the same stuff,
01:04or you would be playing some kind of BS game that doesn't really have anything to do with the comic
01:09series.
01:10What's unique about this game is by focusing on a character that isn't key to the comic book series,
01:16you're able to see stories that actually do matter to the continuity.
01:20You're going to be seeing, like Glenn for instance, that's the comic book Glenn.
01:25The story that you're going to see in this game actually happened in the universe of the Walking Dead comic
01:30book series.
01:31And so, you may get a little bit of insight into what his life was like before he lived in,
01:37you know, the comic book.
01:38So, it makes the game a little bit more important, and it'll be a little bit more fulfilling for fans,
01:43which I think is cool.
01:44So, Telltale's known mostly for, you know, their adventure games.
01:47But, you know, a lot of people want to know, why isn't this an open world shooter with, you know,
01:51guns and chainsaws and what have you?
01:54What's your take on this?
01:55That's what appealed to me about Telltale.
01:58You know, you can play Left 4 Dead.
02:00You know, you can play Dead Rising.
02:01You can play Resident Evil.
02:02Those are all great games.
02:03And I do that, and I think other people should do that.
02:05But to do a Walking Dead game that's just that would be pointless.
02:09I think that you would always be compared to that.
02:11And you'd either be better, you'd be worse, but you'd be the same kind of game.
02:14And that's no fun.
02:14And the thing that's important about The Walking Dead is that, you know, it has heart and it has drama.
02:19And it's about people surviving in this world and it's about how they deal with the end of the world
02:23and how they interact with other people and what that does to a person.
02:27You know, it's all about evolution and, you know, what a character, you know, how a character changes over time.
02:34And that's something that Telltale is able to actually incorporate in the game, which they wouldn't be able to do
02:39if it was just a run and gun, like, I like to cut people up kind of game.
02:43Which, again, are great.
02:44But, you know, that's not what Telltale does and that's why they're doing The Walking Dead game.
02:48You know, this is going to be a game where you're going to see these characters make decisions.
02:52And those decisions are going to affect the outcome of the game.
02:55And that's really exciting to me.
02:56The fact that you'll be able to play through this game from start to finish and then start over again
03:02and make different choices.
03:03And the game will be, you know, substantially different because of those choices is really unique and exciting to me.
03:10And that's really what we wanted to do here.
03:12Telltale designed the game to look quite a bit like the comic book, like Charlie's artwork.
03:17What was your reaction to that when you first saw it?
03:19Well, people do that thing where they go, okay, you know, there's certain aspects to a comic book that are
03:24really cool and I'm going to try and replicate that.
03:27Whether it's, you know, word balloons, funny captions, or, you know, if I can be critical of a game that
03:32I absolutely love,
03:32I think that the art style of the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 game with the, like, cross-hatching and the
03:38weird, like, line work on the figures.
03:39I wish that game just looked like Street Fighter IV.
03:42I'll be honest with you.
03:42I'm a comic book guy and I don't like the way that stuff looks.
03:45So when they came to me and they were like, you know what, we're going to try and make this
03:47look like Charlie Adler's art.
03:49I was like, you know, we'll see.
03:52But the way they've done it is just so, I don't know, it's really impressive to me.
03:57I think it's a unique look.
03:58I think it's something that you can't really get in any other game and it just looks really cool.
04:03And it has a comic book feel, but it doesn't take, a lot of times when people try to do
04:09that, they take limitations in the comic book space and they apply them to a medium that has limitations of
04:15its own.
04:15Right.
04:16And it messes the whole thing up, but they've taken the best parts of comic books and adapted it into
04:20a visual style that I think is really unique and really exciting.
04:24And I don't know, it's a cool looking game. I enjoy looking at it.
04:26So last year you wrote a book called Rise of the Governor that you co-wrote, right?
04:30Yes, absolutely. I co-wrote Rise of the Governor with a talented guy named J. Bonansinga.
04:36J. Bonansinga.
04:37Yes. And it was a cool book and we had a good time working on it.
04:40And now, so with Telltale you are essentially collaborating with them, but you're not necessarily writing the whole thing.
04:48You've got the charming Gary Whitta.
04:50Yes. The charming and somewhat British Gary Whitta.
04:52Yes. And the writers at Telltale. And you're not, how are you involved with that?
04:57Well, I mean, I've learned to collaborate to a certain extent, you know, by working on The Walking Dead show.
05:03I've learned that other people have good ideas and I should listen to them more, which is a lot of
05:08fun.
05:08I'm joking. I mean, the comic book medium is all about collaborating with artists and, you know, working together to
05:14form better ideas.
05:16But it's on a much bigger scale in television, which is kind of cool.
05:19And so, you know, being able to interact with people and come up with better stories is a lot of
05:23fun.
05:24And, you know, when you're doing an adaptation, you always want to make sure that you pick the right team.
05:28And when you're talking to somebody, you know right away whether or not they get the idea and whether or
05:33not they understand its intent and whether or not they're going to do it justice.
05:36And in talking to Telltale, it was immediately, you know, clear to me that, you know, they love The Walking
05:42Dead.
05:42They know The Walking Dead. You know, they want to do it justice.
05:46They're all fanboys.
05:47Exactly. And so, you know, knowing that, you know, they're going to do this has been, you know, really comforting
05:53to me.
05:54And also, like, when we sit down to talk about story, you know, they're pitching ideas to me.
05:59They're going over certain things.
06:00And, you know, it's always me just going, wow, that's a good idea.
06:03Hey, I really like that.
06:05Hey, good job, kids.
06:06You know, I'm not really that kind of.
06:08I hope that's what you sound like.
06:09Ah, good job.
06:10And then you leave.
06:11I've got a cigar and like a news hat.
06:13Sitting there with a newspaper.
06:15You're all brilliant.
06:16You'll be stars one day.
06:16Drinking coffee like an adult.
06:19Like an adult.
06:20Whatever adults do, I don't know.
06:23But, and then, you know, and then they brought in Gary Witta to help out and do that kind of
06:27stuff.
06:27And that's just a really good team.
06:29And, you know, I love Book of Eli.
06:31Gary's a buddy of mine.
06:32I think he's a fantastic writer who's also a huge fan of The Walking Dead.
06:35And, you know, knowing that these guys are not only fans, but also, you know, talented writers
06:40who, you know, are going to do the thing justice has been, you know, really good for me, you know,
06:45because I am a busy dude.
06:46And, you know, it's very important to me that this game, you know, feel like The Walking Dead
06:50and be true to The Walking Dead, you know, comic and, you know, really do it justice.
06:56We're going to take a short break to show you what you've been waiting for.
06:59A first look at Telltale's The Walking Dead.
07:21It's not much, but here you go.
07:24Thank you.
07:25Of course.
07:34Hey, Carly.
07:38Let me have a look at that thing.
07:40Go ahead.
08:15You fixed him.
08:16As the unknown reflection continues to spread unchecked, the estimated death toll continues to skyrocket.
08:22WABE urges you to stay indoors and avoid any contact with individuals you suspect may have been exposed.
08:29The station is okay.
08:30In the event of a full...
08:32Uh, my producer's telling me we have to get off the air.
08:35Steve.
08:39WABE wishes you and your loved ones...
08:48We shouldn't be out in the open like this.
08:50How about you help us clear the way and we'll take you and your daughter out of here and down
08:54to my family's farm.
08:55I'm not a dad.
08:58I'm...
08:59A neighbor.
09:01Her parents are out of town.
09:04Let's get going.
09:05Staying put for too long is a mistake.
09:08So it's just you and your daughter then?
09:11Oh, not his daughter.
09:12He was her neighbor.
09:13Honey, do you know this man?
09:16Yes.
09:19Okay then.
09:21Well...
09:21Looks like you hurt your leg pretty bad there.
09:24How'd this happen?
09:29Car accident.
09:30That so?
09:31Where were you headed before the car accident?
09:39Just, uh, out full drive.
09:44Hmm.
09:46Can I give you a piece of advice?
09:51What is it?
09:52I don't know who you are or what you did.
09:55But you better become a better liar.
09:57And fast.
10:01So what do you want Walking Dead fans to take away from this game?
10:04What do you want this experience to be?
10:06I mean, it's a heightening of the overall Walking Dead experience.
10:09It's, I've read the comics.
10:10I've watched the show.
10:12You know, I've bought the lunchbox.
10:14Robert Kirkman.
10:15There's lunchboxes?
10:15Robert Kirkman is a sellout.
10:16Yeah, of course.
10:17If after all that stuff, you know, you still want more.
10:20Like, I want you to get a fulfilled experience.
10:22I want you to be able to spend a little bit more time in the world.
10:25I mean, this is kind of a cool thing because, you know, when you read the comic or you watch
10:29the show, you know, that's a certain kind of experience.
10:33There's an interaction to it a little bit, you know, where you're thinking about how you would kind of, you
10:38know, live in this situation or what kind of decisions you would make.
10:41And, you know, this is really a heightening of that in that you can interact with these characters now and
10:46you can kind of submerse yourself or immerse yourself or some word that ends in immerse.
10:53I don't know.
10:53That works.
10:54But, I mean, you know, being able to spend some time in The Walking Dead world in a way that
10:59you've never been able to before is awesome.
11:02And I think that's what people are going to get out of this game.
11:05And that's what I want them to get out of the game.
11:06I want them to feel the terror and feel the loss and feel the horrible decisions that you have to
11:12make in order to survive.
11:13You're a terrible person.
11:14Yeah, I like to torture people.
11:15Do I steal this food and make this other person starve so that I can, you know, give it to
11:21this person who I want to live?
11:22Like, can you, you know, do that?
11:25And, I don't know.
11:26It's going to be awesome.
11:27So if the apocalypse hits, I don't want you around.
11:30If the apocalypse hits, I'm not going to be around.
11:33That is no fun.
11:34Look, I'm not going to last very long.
11:35No, okay.
11:36Well, me neither.
11:36I'm not fast.
11:37I'm not smart.
11:38Wow.
11:39Well, listen, it has been a pleasure.
11:41Thank you so much for talking to us today.
11:43Thanks a lot.
11:44Stay tuned for even more gameplay footage from Telltale's The Walking Dead.
