Drama (1953) 72 minutes ~ Black & White

A fictitious war in an unidentified country provides the setting for this Drama. Four soldiers survive the crash-landing of their plane to find themselves in a forest six miles behind enemy lines. The group, led by Lt. Corby, has a plan: They'll make their way to a nearby river, build a raft, and then, under cover of night, float back to friendly territory. Their plans for getting back safely are sidetracked by a young woman who stumbles across them as they hide in the woods, and by the nearby presence of an enemy general who one member of the group is determined to kill. Fear and Desire was Stanley Kubrick's first film, which he completed using his own funds at the age of 24. Not only did Kubrick co-produce and direct the film, he also photographed and edited it as well. Though the film is on the whole a pretentious and amateurish failure, the seeds of future promise are already evident.

Director: Stanley Kubrick

Writer: Howard Sackler

Stars: Frank Silvera, Paul Mazursky, Kenneth Harp, Stephen Coit, Virginia Leith

00:54There is war in this forest.
00:57Not a war that has been fought,
00:59or one that will be,
01:01but any war.
01:04And the enemies who struggle here do not exist,
01:07unless we call them into being.
01:11This forest then,
01:13and all that happens now,
01:15is outside history.
01:18Only the unchanging shapes of fear
01:21and doubt and death
01:24are from our world.
01:27These soldiers that you see
01:29keep our language and our time,
01:32but have no other country
01:35but the mind.
01:37♪
01:50Do you think they're looking for us?
01:52It's one of ours, all right.
01:55They can't see us.
01:58But maybe they saw our plane back there.
02:02There isn't much left of it to see,
02:05unless it's still burning.
02:06Even if they could spot us,
02:08there isn't anything that they could do to help us here.
02:11Here?
02:13Six miles behind the enemy lines?
02:16Well, that's not too far.
02:18Not too far?
02:20In those six miles, there are probably thousands of guys,
02:23and every one of them was taught to shoot at uniforms like this.
02:26If you're so worried about that,
02:28why don't you keep your voice down?
02:31I'm not worried.
02:36What's going to happen, Lieutenant?
02:39If somebody around here saw a plane go down,
02:41they might be looking for us in the woods already.
02:44I'd feel a lot easier if our arsenal was better stocked.
02:49If it isn't very much.
02:52Too bad you fellas didn't get your rifles out of the plane.
02:57Let's see what can be done.
03:03Once you understand how a mousetrap works,
03:06if you're clever enough, you can use it as a springboard.
03:11Here are the front lines.
03:14From our position just before we crashed,
03:17we should be in this general area.
03:22Our own lines are here, and we should be about here.
03:25There's a river that runs east of where we are now, I think.
03:29And that river cuts right through the front lines and winds up on our side.
03:33Now, as I see it,
03:36we might be able to use our reconditioned mousetrap
03:39on the river.
03:41Is that your idea?
03:43To go down the river?
03:44Yes.
03:45But how? How can we get down it?
03:48I can't swim very well.
03:50And Fletcher...
03:53We could do it on a raft.
03:56At night.
03:58Well, we'll never make it any other way.
04:02It's suicide to try to walk out.
04:04I wouldn't have the vaguest idea of how and where to start.
04:09This way, we could just cruise through together in a few hours
04:12and arrive in one piece.
04:14Now, by my computations, we...
04:16Your computations?
04:19With your brilliant figuring that got us here in the first place?
04:40That must be somebody's pet. It has a collar.
04:43Nah, it'd make a better watchdog.
04:46Seems friendly enough.
04:51But we can't use a mascot on this trip.
04:58Hurry up. We don't have all day.
05:02If no one has a better suggestion, let's head for the river.
05:07Some more animals might show up.
05:31It's hard. One foot fights the other.
05:54Faster. The sun is fast.
05:56Get there before it burns in the bushes.
05:58I can do it alone.
06:00But nobody's safe here.
06:01Are they watching me?
06:02Blame who? I'll blame the pig.
06:03Keep them beaded on a string.
06:04Lost. I should look around.
06:05Getting hungry.
06:06What's up?
06:07They're all scared.
06:08Oh, much is in back of us.
06:09So angry at each other.
06:10It's time for night soon.
06:11I want to look up later.
06:12All the twigs cracking in my head.
06:13We'll need pause for the night.
06:14Crash through myself.
06:15The bird was wounded.
06:16I don't run for no reason.
06:17Nail him, son.
06:18Wait.
06:19What's going to hang from the trees tonight?
06:20Hurry with them.
06:21No dying in the woods?
06:22No rabbits there?
06:23Maybe I'm getting old.
06:24Faster. Turn off the lights, please.
06:25I'm sinking in the woods.
06:26Don't die here.
06:27We're scared.
06:28Dark will be sad.
06:29Open the lights in the morning, please.
06:56After we get past this rock, the river isn't very much further.
07:25Frank, get down to the road and take a look.
08:53It's refreshing.
08:54It's an afternoon out of doors in enemy territory.
09:01It's really too bad that the sun doesn't burn his screen instead of brown.
09:05It's a camouflage.
09:06Well, if you see some strange faces across the way, just wave to them casually and try
09:11to look as native as possible.
09:14Lieutenant.
09:15Huh?
09:16Lieutenant.
09:17Come here.
09:18Bring your binoculars.
09:27What do you want?
09:28I'd like you to see something around the riverbed.
09:31What?
09:32I can't make out exactly what it is, but I think you'll be interested.
09:36Come on.
09:39Over there.
09:45See?
09:47It looks like some kind of small airstrip.
09:52Yes, you're right.
09:58Lots of rank around.
10:01Looks like a general.
10:10Sure.
10:15Sure.
10:17A general.
10:18He is a general.
10:22Let's get back and help with the raft.
10:28Mack, let's go.
10:29Let's go.
10:45All we need now is Huffleberry Finn.
10:50This ought to see us through.
10:51Yeah, it doesn't look bad at all.
10:54Hey.
10:55Hey.
11:00Should we make sure it floats?
11:02Rafts always float.
11:06It's unfortunate that we don't have
11:07a distinguished bottle to christen it with.
11:09Yeah, we could give it a name.
11:20They must have seen us.
11:22If we stay here, we'll get killed.
11:25It's starting to get dark.
11:27I don't know.
11:29Perhaps they didn't see us.
11:33But it's too dangerous to wait here until we find out.
11:36But what are we gonna do?
11:37How are we gonna get back?
11:38Hurry up.
11:39Let's go.
11:43That plane must have landed down that house we saw before.
11:47What's the difference?
11:48There must be something big going on down there.
11:51Maybe the generals are having a convention tonight.
11:59Let's go.
12:20We didn't see this on the way to the river.
12:23No, we've been running in a new direction.
12:27Whatever junk you're eating sure smells good.
12:30It's a weird zone.
12:31Those guns look even more tempting than the food does.
12:35I've got an idea.
12:39Look, no matter what we do from here on,
12:41we're much better off with some guns.
12:59Let's go.
13:29Let's go.
13:48We better hurry.
13:49There may be others around.
13:50I'm gonna get some of that stew first.
13:54Sidney, better grab something to eat.
13:57It'll be a long time till our next feast.
14:02You better eat something.
14:16How's the stew, Mac?
14:19Hmm?
14:25It's kind of cold, but cold stew's all right.
14:28Cold stew on a blazing island.
14:31We've just made a perfect definition of war, Mac.
14:33That's ducky.
14:34Of course, a blazing island with a tempest of gunfire
14:37around it that fans the blaze.
14:43Perhaps if we could...
14:44Shh.
14:48Shh.
14:58Somebody must have heard us.
14:59Grab those guns and let's keep going.
15:00Well, why did you have to shoot?
15:01Forget it, let's move.
15:11We spend our lives running our fingers
15:14down the lists and directories,
15:16looking for our real names, our permanent addresses.
15:24No man is an island?
15:28Perhaps that was true a long time ago,
15:31before the ice age.
15:35The glaciers have melted away and now we're all islands,
15:40parts of a world made of islands only.
15:44How long are you gonna hang around here?
16:15We're in a fine mess now.
16:19I'd give anything to trade places
16:22with that dog we chased yesterday.
16:27Seems like whenever people get in a hole,
16:29they begin to get jealous of dogs.
16:35I admit that our prospects aren't very cheerful.
16:39I'm sure they're not.
16:41I admit that our prospects aren't very cheerful.
16:50But how about going back to see if our raft is still there?
16:54Look, if we were spotted,
16:55they'll have a trap waiting for us when we show up.
16:57Well, it's a chance.
16:59But trying to walk out is as risky today
17:00as it was yesterday.
17:02We'll scout around the river and make certain.
17:05Then what?
17:07Even if we find the raft there,
17:08even if none of them are laying for us, then what?
17:10Then we'll have to sit tight until it gets dark
17:13and hope that we don't have a full moon.
17:15We can sing old songs if we get restless waiting.
17:18Which matter, which matter, snookums?
17:21I hate that they're cannibals.
17:23So even if we get caught, you're pretty safe.
17:26Leave me alone.
17:29We may be in the woods, McClellan,
17:30but let's try to remain civilized.
17:39Yeah, I suppose you're right, Lucan.
17:43Anyway, there won't be many days left to be civilized in.
17:46We stick around these woods much longer.
18:08Oh, I'm sorry.
18:09I'm sorry.
18:10I'm sorry.
18:11I'm sorry.
18:12I'm sorry.
18:13I'm sorry.
18:14I'm sorry.
18:15I'm sorry.
18:16I'm sorry.
18:17I'm sorry.
18:18I'm sorry.
18:19I'm sorry.
18:20I'm sorry.
18:21I'm sorry.
18:22I'm sorry.
18:23I'm sorry.
18:24I'm sorry.
18:25I'm sorry.
18:26I'm sorry.
18:27I'm sorry.
18:28I'm sorry.
18:29I'm sorry.
18:30I'm sorry.
18:31I'm sorry.
18:32I'm sorry.
18:33I'm sorry.
18:34I'm sorry.
18:35I'm sorry.
18:36I'm sorry.
18:37I'm sorry.
18:38I'm sorry.
18:56You see us?
18:57Shut up.
19:37Don't be afraid.
19:55We're not going to hurt you.
19:59She's quite nice.
20:00Don't you think so, boys?
20:03What are we supposed to do with her now?
20:05I've got a wife at home.
20:06I'm afraid she's become our uninvited guest.
20:09I must say I've had worse guests at better parties.
20:15All right, Carvey.
20:16All right.
20:17Let's not forget where we are.
20:20Even though we're lost in the woods,
20:21let's try to remain civilized.
20:26Well, we can't stay here.
20:33You'll leave her fish here?
20:35Don't be funny.
20:41What are you going to do with her, Lieutenant?
20:44Give me your belt.
20:45You too, Fletcher.
20:49Please don't beat her.
20:50She's just scared like we are.
20:52She doesn't even talk.
20:53Get a grip on yourself.
20:54No one's going to punish her.
20:55I simply want to tie her up.
20:58Now give me your belt.
20:59Let's hurry it up.
21:00My arm's getting tired.
21:06Be careful not to hurt her.
21:22I hope she doesn't start screaming.
21:30She's a pretty little thing.
21:32Why don't we just leave her here and get going?
21:35Don't rush me.
21:36If we can make her understand this,
21:38perhaps she can tell us whether they found the raft.
21:42Habla espanol?
21:44I'll handle this, Sidney.
21:46I'm quite sure she wasn't educated abroad.
21:49Let's see.
21:52You, sea, boat, hour, boat.
22:00Boat?
22:02Yes, that's it.
22:03Boat.
22:05You, sea, boat?
22:10Don't tell me she doesn't even understand you.
22:25If she can't tell us anything, let's let her go.
22:28Sure, so she can run downstream to that command post
22:30and tip our hand.
22:32You kids and your ideas.
22:36Maybe she was going there in the first place.
22:39With the face, you mean?
22:40Sure.
22:42A general gets what he wants for dinner no matter what.
22:45It's fish caught or fresh strawberries with gold plates.
22:49This is hardly the time to become a revolutionary.
22:54We ought to continue to see about the raft.
22:57But we can't let her go yet.
22:59Why?
22:59What'd she do to us?
23:01She can understand.
23:02She would have told you.
23:03I already told you why.
23:08Sidney, you'll stay here with the young lady
23:10until we come back.
23:13Here, take this.
23:16You're going to leave me here?
23:19Yes.
23:20I told you to watch the girl.
23:23You're going to make me stay in and not come back.
23:26I know because of yesterday.
23:28Keep calm, kid.
23:30If we're not back by night, just get in touch
23:32with the old man about her wedding.
23:34Maybe you can settle down in a tree house
23:35and raise some monkeys.
23:38Leave him alone, Max.
23:39Don't listen to him.
23:40Remember, you promised to come back, Fletcher.
23:43I want you to stay here and keep an eye on her
23:46because she may prove very useful if the raft
23:47has been discovered.
23:50We ought to be back in a couple of hours.
23:53Now just relax.
23:55Don't get panicky.
23:59See you later, Sidney.
24:30I'm really glad they let me stay.
24:33I'm not fooling.
24:37Please don't be afraid to like me.
24:40Please.
24:42That's why they let me stay.
24:45They thought you would like me.
24:52They threw me a gun and I can't behave.
24:57Don't do that.
24:58Don't move away.
24:59It's not my fault.
25:04I stopped them from beating you.
25:07Don't scowl.
25:10Watch.
25:11I'll make you laugh.
25:13Look, I'm the general.
25:15I'm the general.
25:17I'm the general.
25:20I'm the general.
25:21I'm the general.
25:22I'm the general.
25:23I'm the general.
25:25I'm the general.
25:26I'm the general.
25:27I'm the general.
25:28I'm the general.
25:29I'm the general.
25:47Hey, hey, watch me.
25:51Attention!
25:52Glad to have you with us, sir.
25:54Quite frankly, the situation is desperate.
25:57I don't think I can cope with it alone.
26:01Isn't it funny? Isn't it?
26:04Orderly! More fat fish that the girl caught for me.
26:12The General! I am the General!
26:23You don't even smile.
26:26You don't.
26:30Listen.
26:33I'm lost.
26:37Lost on this terrible island.
26:48If you have to hate me,
26:51please try to like me also.
27:06They must have been reading a magazine in that plane.
27:12I wouldn't have believed it.
27:15Beck.
27:17Better take a look around the river bend.
27:20Careful.
27:22We'll get to where camouflaging will ramp.
27:34I'm a little worried about Sidney back there with the girl.
27:37I don't like the way he's been acting.
27:39You're not going soft-headed and thinking about taking her along with us tonight.
27:43You're beginning to sound like Sidney.
27:45No.
27:47She could bring three friends, perhaps.
27:50But as it is, she'll remain locked in the forest like we were.
28:03That must be the one that almost nailed us.
28:10There he is again.
28:13It's him.
28:15A cocky little king.
28:18And me holding binoculars like a lady watching an opera.
28:22Binoculars.
28:24Soon he'll go into his palace with all his iron lapdogs.
28:28If only this was a rifle sight.
28:31Then I could make the red eye between his ears.
28:34Then he'd see McClellan.
28:43Girls always love stories.
28:46But it's so hard to finish and wait for words.
28:52Do you want to hear more?
28:54Do you?
28:56All right.
28:59Then the spirit in magician's power goes back to the island...
29:02and tells Miranda that her father's dead.
29:04The spirit sings how he's dead at the bottom of the ocean.
29:07His bones are coral, his eyes are pearls...
29:09and Miranda, her father's dead.
29:12Dead?
29:14Can't you understand anything?
29:17Dead.
29:19Dead.
29:21Dead.
29:25Now do you understand?
29:43All clear?
29:46Everything's all right.
29:51I'd like to talk to you about that house.
29:53What house?
29:55That house down there.
29:58The one where we saw that general yesterday.
30:00Wait around, Mac.
30:02Right now I'd like you to go back to Sydney.
30:04I'd like to talk to you about that house.
30:06Wait around, Mac.
30:08Right now I'd like you to go back to Sydney.
30:10Right now I'd like you to go back to Sydney.
30:12I didn't like the way he was acting when we left.
30:14I'm a little concerned.
30:16But don't you think that we...
30:18Do as I say, will you?
30:19As soon as we're through here, we'll join you.
30:21I don't want anything to go wrong back there.
30:24I don't want anything to go wrong back there.
30:38Here.
30:39I brought you some water.
30:54Now you like me, don't you?
31:55I'll get you loose.
31:57Just a minute.
31:59You'll put your arms around me.
32:01I know.
32:02Wait.
32:05I knew you'd like me.
32:07Just a minute.
32:24Just a minute.
32:50Don't run away!
32:51Don't make me stay!
32:54You're going to tell the General!
32:57You're going to tell him I'm in front of him!
33:00Get back!
33:03Don't tell the General!
33:06I won't let you!
33:24Blood...
33:26Blood...
33:27Blood...
33:28Blood...
33:33Blood...
33:54What's the matter?
33:56Where's the girl?
33:59Answer me.
34:02Tell me, or I'll pound you to a jelly.
34:06She was tired.
34:08She went to lie down.
34:11Over there.
34:15Don't annoy her, Mac.
34:18Come here.
34:45It wasn't my fault.
34:48The magician did it.
34:50Honest.
34:52Prospero the magician.
34:55First we're a bird, and then we're an island.
35:00Before I was a general.
35:03And now I'm a fish.
35:05Hurrah for the magicians!
35:08Hurrah!
35:11Hurrah for the magicians!
35:20The river.
35:25It's blood, Mac.
35:29Cold.
35:31Cold.
35:34I'm going for a swim.
35:36Come on in, Mac.
35:38Listen to them.
35:41It's blood.
36:03What happened? Where's Sidney and the girl?
36:06He...
36:10The kid must have gone out of his head.
36:13When I got back, he was just laying there.
36:19The girl's dead.
36:22Over there.
36:24He shot her.
36:25Where is he?
36:26He's gone.
36:29He yelled something about how the magician does it.
36:35Before he was something.
36:38And now he's a fish.
36:41Before I could stop him, he ran away towards the river.
36:47He kept laughing and screaming.
36:49We can't do anything about it now.
36:52We'll have to move again.
36:54A nice spot near the raft would be the best place to wait till night.
37:01I guess there's going to be more elbow room than I thought.
37:07Yeah.
37:10And I want to talk to you about that house down the road.
37:13And the general.
37:25Kill him.
37:28No, I won't hear any more about it.
37:30I don't know what's gotten into you, Mike.
37:33So you saw a general.
37:36So what?
37:38The raft is all set and in a couple of hours we'll be on it.
37:41Raft.
37:43Raft. Raft. Raft.
37:48Can't you see any further?
37:50A general, why he...
37:51How many times do we have to go over this?
37:53Won't I tell you again?
37:56It's one of their generals to me.
37:58He's cheap in my rate of exchange, but our lives aren't.
38:01Your rate of exchange.
38:05You make me laugh.
38:09If you had any guts...
38:10Look, I don't want to talk about it anymore.
38:13Forget about the general for a minute.
38:16What about the plane you saw?
38:18That's right.
38:20What about that plane?
38:22We've already been over this.
38:24It looks like a two-seater and with that small field for me to clear.
