Martial Arts / Action (1974) 90 minutes ~ Color

Christie Love was a very beautiful and quite charming black woman who also happened to be a skilled undercover operative with the Los Angeles Police Department. Her smarts and skills often came in handy when posing as a prostitute and jewel thief, etc. in an effort to bring down the bad guys. Her boss was Lt. Reardon, who was replaced by Capt. Ryan. Caruso, Belmont, Valencia and Gallagher were cops with whom Christie worked.

00:00:23We've got enough on you, Spiliotis, to arrest you right now.
00:00:27Taxes, fraud.
00:00:28How about little manslaughter thrown in?
00:00:29Okay.
00:00:30Okay.
00:00:30What do you want to know?
00:00:31You know what I want to know.
00:00:33The heroin.
00:00:34Where it's coming from.
00:00:35When.
00:00:35How it's distributed.
00:00:37It's different.
00:00:37Every time.
00:00:38I don't know.
00:00:40Only the top guy in this area knows.
00:00:42Here the top guy is Enzo Cortino.
00:00:44I know Enzo Cortino is the top guy.
00:00:46I know that.
00:00:49I also know that this town is dry.
00:00:51Seattle is dry.
00:00:52San Francisco is dry.
00:00:53The whole west coast is dry.
00:00:54Now you tell me what's happening.
00:00:56How?
00:00:56When?
00:00:57And where?
00:00:58I don't know.
00:00:59Cortino never told me.
00:01:01Nothing.
00:01:01All these years.
00:01:02Now you called in and said you had something to say to me.
00:01:05Now you better say it.
00:01:06You know what?
00:01:07Oh.
00:01:08Frieldon.
00:01:09There's a ledger.
00:01:11Cortino's got a ledger.
00:01:14A book.
00:01:15You know with all the names.
00:01:16All the places.
00:01:18How the stuff comes in.
00:01:19Where it goes.
00:01:22Okay.
00:01:23Where is it?
00:01:24Where does he keep it?
00:01:24Come on.
00:01:26I don't know.
00:01:28Now what do you mean?
00:01:29You say there's a ledger and now you're telling me you don't know?

00:01:36She's the only one who knows where it is.
00:01:39Come on.
00:01:39What is this bull?
00:01:40You told me there's a ledger and now you expect me to believe that Cortino tells his girlfriend everything?
00:01:45I'm telling you.
00:01:46She's not just his girlfriend.
00:01:49It's like she's the only one he really trusts.
00:01:55Listen.
00:01:56Every time a shipment's due, Helena takes a little trip to Miami.
00:02:00He sends her.
00:02:02Maybe.
00:02:03Maybe that's where the ledger is.
00:02:22Good night, Bill.
00:02:23Thanks.
00:02:24It's not easy.
00:02:26Now, Tom.
00:02:27As soon as we get to the city, I want you to check her bank account.

00:05:01Depends on what you got in mind, sugar.
00:05:04Well, I got in mind a little walk through the park.
00:05:09A little walk through the park?

00:07:40I'm okay. Where were you?
00:07:41I lost your way back there. I'm sorry.
00:07:44Well, there he is. Lover boy himself.
00:07:47Give me your cup.
00:07:51Christy, this guy is killed.
00:07:53Four prostitutes. You were supposed to wait for me.
00:07:55Sorry, Seymour, but he was in kind of a hurry.
00:07:59Weren't you, sweetheart?
00:08:03Okay, what's your full name?
00:08:04Oh, he doesn't talk. He's a man of action.
00:08:09According to his ID, Andrew Norman.
00:08:12N-O-R-M-A-N-D, 4213 Adams Drive.
00:08:17All the credit cards.
00:08:21Oh, look what we found here.
00:08:28$21.52.
00:08:30Hey, Christy.
00:08:30Yeah?
00:08:31I got the forms.
00:08:32Now, fill them out, but don't go anywhere, okay?
00:08:33Oh, hey, come on, man. I've had it.
00:08:35I want to go home.
00:08:36Reared and called. He's coming over.
00:08:38Here, he wants to buy you a hamburger.
00:08:40What?
00:08:40Christy, you're a hero.
00:08:41Christy, Christy wants a bath.
00:08:53No way.
00:08:55No way.
00:08:56Now, you listen to me.
00:08:58I want you on that plane to Miami tomorrow.
00:09:01Maybe there isn't any ledger.
00:09:02Maybe Spilliotis invented it, but we're checking.
00:09:05Just before the town gets loaded with junk, Helena Farga does go down to Miami, and we
00:09:10want you to follow her.
00:09:11Hey, listen.
00:09:11For the last three weeks, I have been sashaying around that part for you, wearing these freaky
00:09:15clothes and getting caught at by freaks.
00:09:18Finally, I almost get myself killed by some turdler, and now you want me to...
00:09:21You were supposed to wait for Greenberg.
00:09:23That nut killed four women.
00:09:24You could have been killed.
00:09:25Well, what was I out there for?
00:09:27You didn't want me killed.
00:09:28What'd you put me on the detail for?
00:09:29I told you not to take any chances, didn't I?
00:09:31Damn it.
00:09:33I don't want you getting killed.
00:09:35Oh, that's sweet.
00:09:37That's cute.
00:09:38Can I go home now if I don't get in the tub right this second?
00:09:42As long as you're on that plane tomorrow.
00:09:44Do you think Cortino's going to trust his entire organization to a tramp?
00:09:48That's your assignment, kid.
00:09:49You got it.
00:09:50Or maybe you think just because you're the only female on my squad that you deserve special
00:09:54privileges.
00:09:55Have I ever asked for any special privileges?
00:09:57Hey, whatever mess you've tossed at me in the last six months, I have done.
00:10:01Go ahead.
00:10:01Tell everybody.
00:10:07Well, what's bugging you now?
00:10:09I'm tired.
00:10:10And I just don't dig wild goose chases.
00:10:15You know, Casey, I was wondering why all of a sudden for the first time you invited me
00:10:19out somewhere, but this fancy bistro here and this whatever that is, they're not making
00:10:25the kid fall over.
00:10:26No way!
00:10:29That's what I get for trying to be nice.
00:10:31Okay, that's it.
00:10:33I don't want any more lip from you, or you'll be third grade again.
00:10:37Hero or no hero.
00:10:38You got that, you dig?
00:10:44Yes, sir.
00:10:46Whatever you say, sir.
00:11:03Well, let me walk you to your door, at least.
00:11:05I know the way.
00:11:06Good night.
00:11:07Now, wait a minute.
00:11:08There are a lot of strange characters around here.
00:11:09So I'll call a cop.
00:11:15Now, don't forget.
00:11:16Find out everything you can about Elena Vard.
00:11:18I know.
00:11:19I know.
00:11:19Where she goes, who she sees, who she talks to.
00:11:22Yeah, that's right.
00:11:23And take a little rest for yourself.
00:11:24You probably can use it, you know?
00:11:26Give me your key.
00:11:28Would you look at this?
00:11:29Prince Charming is alive and well and breathing and everything.
00:11:32Yeah, yeah.
00:11:33Or you don't have to worry.
00:11:34I'll keep the secret.
00:11:36Excuse me.
00:11:38Well, don't you think we should discuss this a little more in the evening?
00:11:43Is that the best you can come up with?
00:11:45Well, I'm no poet, but the least you can do is invite me in for a nightcap.
00:11:49Uh-huh.
00:11:51Well, remember, I have to get some rest for my next assignment.
00:11:55Good night, Mr. Rearling.
00:12:10Good night.
00:12:10Good night.
00:12:22Nothing.
00:12:22A big zero.
00:12:24This is a wild goose chase, boss.
00:12:27She's down there stretched out by the pool all day.
00:12:30And the goon plays cards nearby.
00:12:32Looking around with those freaky fish eyes.
00:12:35Now, what about the ledger?
00:12:37No ledger.
00:12:38No nothing.
00:12:39But did you check the banks?
00:12:41Yeah.
00:12:41She made a bank deposit.
00:12:43Counts in the, uh, name of her nephew.
00:12:47Kid named Raymond Garwood.
00:12:49No safety deposit boxes.
00:12:51But who does she see?
00:12:52Nobody.
00:12:53Just her nephew.
00:12:54You wouldn't believe it.
00:12:55It's like something out of a Disney film.
00:12:58Boss, there's nothing else to do around here.
00:13:00So, um, if you don't mind, I want to come home, okay?
00:13:03No.
00:13:04Now, you come back when she comes back.
00:13:07Now, look, there's got to be more there.
00:13:09Look, you're a detective.
00:13:11So detective.
00:13:13Christy?
00:13:14Are you there?
00:13:16Yeah, I'm here.
00:13:19I'm having a wonderful time, Mr. Reardon.
00:13:42Mr. Carroll, lobby, please.
00:13:46Hi.
00:13:47Hi.
00:13:52This is really great, isn't it?
00:13:54Sure beats Smog City.
00:14:00Well, come to think of it, Mama, it does beat Smog City.
00:14:05Just trying to be friendly.
00:14:07How does it feel of you, Lady Pig?
00:14:12Hey, fine.
00:14:13I'm, uh, I'm doing, uh, I'm having such a vacation,
00:14:16you wouldn't believe.
00:14:19Vacation?
00:14:20You've been telling me all week.
00:14:23Hey, I've just been seeing the sights.
00:14:26You know, I bet you could show me around.
00:14:27You having family here and all.
00:14:33You wouldn't believe this, but
00:14:35we've probably got a lot in coming, you and me.
00:14:38Both of us probably climbing out of some royal slum somewhere
00:14:42a long time ago.
00:14:45Mine's East Oakwood, Chicago.
00:14:47That's where I was born.
00:14:49Oh, yeah?
00:14:51So what?
00:14:53So, maybe we both started in the same kind of underprivileged neighborhood.
00:14:59You tell me about your rest, I'll tell you about mine.
00:15:02Pig.
00:15:03Yeah, okay, all right.
00:15:04Let's, uh, level with each other.
00:15:06You spotted me, you know why I'm here.
00:15:08Now, come on, make it easy on yourself.
00:15:10You tell me where it is and, uh, we'll make it easy for you.
00:15:14Tell the judge you're cooperating and maybe...
00:15:16I don't know what you're talking about.
00:15:17Hey, don't be stupid, okay?
00:15:19Cortino's ledger, that's what I want to know about.
00:15:22The score and the load of stuff that's due, where it's coming in and when it's coming in.
00:15:26That's what I want to know, baby.
00:15:27Where's Cortino's ledger?
00:15:32You're so stupid, you've got to be a cop.
00:15:35Now, if there was a ledger, or if I had it, or I knew where it was, why would I
00:15:42turn you?
00:15:43I thought you just might be interested in saving your skin, because we're going to bust you, baby.
00:15:50I never heard of a ledger.
00:15:53And you better watch your skin, baby.
00:16:11Well, look who's here.
00:16:13What are things supposed to do, anyway?
00:16:15Sweat out them bad body fluids?
00:16:17Huh?
00:16:23What makes someone like you become a cop?
00:16:27I tell you, you tell me.
00:16:28What makes somebody like you become a tramp?
00:16:32Listen, nobody owns me.
00:16:33I do what I want, nobody buys me.
00:16:35Oh, right.
00:16:37The apartment and the car and the bank account, it all comes from the old welfare plan, right?
00:16:43What are your business, where it comes from?
00:16:44Hey, it is my business, and I don't mean because I'm a cop, either.
00:16:48Now, your car and your bank account and all the rest of it comes out of my home slum, East
00:16:53Oakwood, Junkie City.
00:16:55All that five and dime stuff, and every bit of it comes from you, you and Cortino.
00:17:00Listen, pig, just lay off on me.
00:17:01You know, I got a cousin.
00:17:03He used to be a nice kid.
00:17:04You know what he does now?
00:17:05He's a pimp.
00:17:06Got to be.
00:17:07He and his old lady don't get that fix.
00:17:08It's off the roof.
00:17:11There are a lot of kids on those roofs, too.
00:17:14They're getting their fixes all right, thanks to Cortino, but they're paying for it with their guts.
00:17:21And who gets all the bread?
00:17:23You do.
00:17:25You and Cortino.
00:17:27Isn't that right, sweetheart?
00:17:30Oh, I'd like to get my hands on you.
00:17:34I don't believe it.
00:17:36You mean you just asked her about the ledger?
00:17:38So sue me already.
00:17:40It's time for a different attack.
00:17:43Hold on, I think it's room service.
00:17:45Just a second.
00:18:04Hold on, please.
00:18:04I have to pay the check.
00:18:07Christy, come on.
00:18:08I can't hang on to this phone all day.
00:18:25I can't seem to find my...
00:18:42Christy, what's going on?
00:18:43I can't stand on to this phone.
00:18:45You...
00:18:46You...
00:18:46You...
00:18:46You...
00:18:51Help!
00:18:52No!
00:18:54No!
00:18:55No!
00:18:56No!
00:18:59No!
00:19:00No!
00:19:00Will you get on this phone?
00:19:02No!
00:19:04Oh!
00:19:06No!
00:19:08No!
00:19:22I guess you know you're not getting a tip.
00:19:24You know that.
00:19:28Terrific view.
00:19:29Come on.
00:19:30Come on, there's only 15 floors down.
00:19:32And you don't have to worry about the first 14.
00:19:38Christy, Christy, are you all right?
00:19:40What's happening?
00:19:52I knew you were not going to leave this, boss, but...
00:19:54Leave what?
00:19:55Now, what are you up to?
00:19:56Are you in any kind of trouble?
00:19:59No.
00:20:10You are off the job.
00:20:12How about that?
00:20:13Does that get through to you?
00:20:14Huh?
00:20:15Well, that's the way you wanted it, right?
00:20:17But what a way to do it.
00:20:19I did it!
00:20:20I suppose I called down to room service and asked them to send up one killer?
00:20:24Yeah, well, it's done.
00:20:25So now you can go back to doing whatever it is you do when you're not messing things up.
00:20:30Is that the complete list of Cortino's businesses?
00:20:32Well, this is just the legitimate stuff.
00:20:3537.
00:20:36Hey, come on.
00:20:37I want to stick with Helena and follow this thing through.
00:20:39Will you get out of here?
00:20:41I can nail her.
00:20:42I know I can.
00:20:43Get that information that we want, that we need.
00:20:45I got an idea.
00:20:46Christy, you know what you've got?
00:20:47You've got chutzpah.
00:20:48That's what you've got.
00:20:49Would you just listen?
00:20:50Just for a second, please?
00:20:52Now, Varga's a very touchy lady.
00:20:54I figure if I can do some background work on her, I can come up with something that will make
00:20:57her cooperate with us.
00:20:59Cooperate big.
00:21:00Christy, look, how long has it been since you've babysat from midnight to eight with
00:21:03a bunch of winos?
00:21:05Cortino trusts Helena, right?
00:21:07She knows where that ledger is, right?
00:21:09So he's got to have a hold so strong on her that...
00:21:12Hey, come on.
00:21:13I want to dig in and find those skeletons.
00:21:15Get out.
00:21:16Get out.
00:21:16All right, listen.
00:21:17I'll make a bet with you.
00:21:18When does that next shipment do?
00:21:20I don't know.
00:21:21An hour, a month.
00:21:22I don't know.
00:21:22Uh-huh, precisely.
00:21:24Give me three days.
00:21:25If I don't come up with anything by then, you win.
00:21:28Win?
00:21:29I win what?
00:21:31You name it, you got it.
00:21:35Uh, you better report to Monzo, huh?
00:21:37Monzo?
00:21:37He's with the pickpocket details.
00:21:39That's right, baby.
00:21:40And you do a good job for the force, you hear?
00:21:42Now, uh, what'd you say, Stoner, with the blue, uh, pins or what?
00:21:45The blue pins indicate dealings with the city.
00:21:48Firm contracts, right?
00:21:49The red pins are contracts with the state.
00:21:53Hello, Tom?
00:21:54Christy.
00:21:55Uh, not too good.
00:21:56I'm afraid I'm calling in sick.
00:21:58I won't be able to do any pickpocket details today.
00:22:01Mm-hmm.
00:22:03All right.
00:22:04Okay.
00:22:04Bye-bye.
00:22:06Bye-bye.
00:22:07Bye-bye.
00:22:08Bye-bye.
00:22:09Bye-bye.
00:22:10Bye-bye.
00:22:10Bye-bye.
00:22:11Bye-bye.
00:22:14Bye-bye.
00:22:14Bye-bye.
00:22:15Bye-bye.
00:22:16Bye-bye.
00:22:17Bye-bye.
00:22:18Bye-bye.
00:22:21Bye-bye.
00:22:55Bye-bye.
00:22:56I'd like to see Mrs. Long, please.
00:22:58Oh?
00:23:03You jiving me.
00:23:04Would I jive you?
00:23:07Come in.
00:23:24Excuse me, but this lady...
00:23:27Mrs. Long?
00:23:28Mrs. Long?
00:23:29Mrs. Long no longer.
00:23:32I'm Mrs. Fennelly.
00:23:33Hey, how do you do?
00:23:34How do you do?
00:23:37Oh, didn't Abby tell you we no longer need any help?
00:23:39Mother, you're really disgusting.
00:23:42Friend, darling, for all we know she may be Avon calling.
00:23:45Hello, sister.
00:23:47Welcome.
00:23:49No, thanks.
00:23:51Mrs. Fennelly.
00:23:53Christy Love.
00:23:57And now, Mrs. Fennelly, about ten years ago, you had as an employee a Helena Varga.
00:24:05Helena?
00:24:06Helena.
00:24:07Helena?
00:24:08Um...
00:24:08Yes.
00:24:09I'd appreciate any information you can supply about her.
00:24:12Information?
00:24:13Yes.
00:24:13Well, you see, she's applied for this very high security position in government.
00:24:17Helena?
00:24:19Well, I'm sorry I can't tell you anymore, but I'm sure you understand.
00:24:22Oh, yes.
00:24:23Yes, of course.
00:24:25Well, what can I tell you?
00:24:27It's been a very long time.
00:24:30Well, according to our records, Mrs. Fennelly, she spent a year here as companion to your daughter?
00:24:36Yes.
00:24:37Yes, that's right.
00:24:38She, uh...
00:24:39She came from some orphanage or convent or something, I think.
00:24:44And at that time, she was also taking night courses at a business college.
00:24:48Now, their records show that, uh, she finished high school at 16, and she was studying bilingual stenography.
00:24:56Lordy B.
00:24:59Suddenly, she dropped out, and at that same time, she left here.
00:25:03Mrs. Fennelly, can you tell me why?
00:25:05No.
00:25:06No, I can't.
00:25:09I think she got a better position.
00:25:11Daddy knocked...
00:25:12Amy!
00:25:17I'm sorry.
00:25:19I really can't help you any further, miss.
00:25:21Oh, love.
00:25:23Mrs. Fennelly, did Helena have that child?
00:25:26I'm sorry.
00:25:27I told you I cannot help you any further.
00:25:32Well, thanks anyway.
00:25:34And I must say, it's been quite an experience meeting you all.
00:25:40Ciao.
00:25:42Elena never appeared to be a communist.
00:25:44If that's what you want to know...
00:25:52Is Helena in any trouble?
00:25:55No.
00:25:56You think, Elena?
00:25:58Yeah, I do.
00:25:59She was really good to me.
00:26:00She paid attention.
00:26:02That was hard for her, you know.
00:26:04She had her own grief.
00:26:05What kind of grief?
00:26:06I don't know.
00:26:08I used to go to her room and she was crying.
00:26:12She had no one.
00:26:16Did she have her baby?
00:26:19Did she intend to have it, Amy?
00:26:22Come on.
00:26:23You gotta remember something about it.
00:26:24I was a kid.
00:26:27She talks about never having the baby.
00:26:29I never heard anything more.
00:26:34You take care.
00:26:35And, uh...
00:26:37Are you gonna be all right in the air?
00:26:38Oh, sure.
00:26:40Okay.
00:26:41And, uh...
00:26:42I'd cool it with the grass.
00:26:51You want something?
00:26:53You kind of remind me of Helena.
00:26:56You like me.
00:26:57I'm in.
00:26:57You're in.
00:26:58I'm like feeling out now.
00:27:13I'm like you're in.
00:27:13You're in.
00:27:13I'm in.
00:27:15I know you're in.
00:27:24I mean, you're in.
00:29:24Oh, thank you.
00:29:26Thank you, lady.
00:29:42See ya.
00:33:13Hey, I feel great.
00:33:15Tell me, how's the job going?
00:33:18Well, it keeps me off the street.
00:33:22Need some help.
00:33:24I thought so when you called tonight.
00:33:27Helena Varga.
00:33:33Sorry.
00:33:34Well, there's really not much I can tell you.
00:33:38I met her about ten years ago
00:33:41at one of those abortion clinics.
00:33:43And then, about a year later,
00:33:47we were working a house together.
00:33:51Then she left. I haven't seen her since.
00:33:53You haven't seen her since then?
00:33:56But you talked to her, though.
00:34:05But how come she calls you?
00:34:07Because I was like her friend.
00:34:08You know, I helped break her in.
00:34:11Christy, please.
00:34:12I'd do anything for you.
00:34:14Health saved my life.
00:34:15Hey, I don't want any favors.
00:34:17Baby, I know you kept me out of jail.
00:34:20I know that.
00:34:22But don't.
00:34:22Do you know the kind of stuff that Helena is into?
00:34:26I can't tell you nothing, Christy.
00:34:27I haven't seen her for a long time.
00:34:29Did she have the abortion that time?
00:34:32What do you mean?
00:34:33I mean, I don't figure she did.
00:34:36I got a feeling that she had that kid senior, did she?
00:34:40No.
00:34:42She had an abortion at that place.
00:34:44What place?
00:34:45I don't know.
00:34:49I can't remember.
00:34:51Why?
00:34:56Shady acres.
00:34:58Sunny acres.
00:35:00Near Ohio.
00:35:02I mean, I think they went out of business a long time ago.
00:35:07She had the abortion.
00:35:12Thanks, Celia.
00:35:15I mean, a lot of places went out of business at that time.
00:35:17It cost us a pill, you know.
00:35:22Um, I think you really got to be dumb nowadays to get caught.
00:35:27Hey.
00:35:29Hey, don't be scared.
00:35:30You know I wouldn't hurt you.
00:35:33Hang loose, Marla.
00:36:02Hey, don't be scared.
00:36:05Hey, god.
00:36:19That is just beautiful.
00:36:21I tell you, there's your new gold mine, samurai movies.
00:36:25It'd be bigger here than all of that Chinese kung fu stuff.
00:36:30Mr. Cortino, I enjoyed the film.
00:36:33But, uh, I don't see the connection.
00:36:36Let me tell you about Japan.
00:36:39It's going to take over the whole planet.
00:36:42I mean, with the transistors and the cameras and the cars and now these movies.
00:36:48Then it's certainly true.
00:36:50I suppose next to the German mark, the yen's the most stable currency in the world today.
00:36:55Aha. Just so.
00:36:58Now we are going into the movie business.
00:37:00And we are going to clean up.
00:37:05Mr. Cortino, could we get down to our business?
00:37:10Please.
00:37:11In a hurry. You kids are always in a hurry.
00:37:14I called your appointment first.
00:37:17I don't know what she's after.
00:37:20She's been asking all kinds of questions about...
00:37:23I can't speak for the others, but, uh, well, Dad is concerned.
00:37:29Now you tell Dad.
00:37:30Dad, take it easy. Tell all your dads, don't shove!
00:37:38No, no.
00:37:38Okay.
00:37:39I'm glad you called.
00:37:39Two days.
00:37:41It'll be Thursday, two days from now. You'll have your stuff.
00:37:46Great.
00:37:46You go back to your dads.
00:37:49You tell them to me not to worry.
00:37:52Thanks, Mr. Cortino.
00:37:55Thank you very much.
00:37:56Stay.
00:38:06You bring back such memories.
00:38:10Those were lovely times.
00:38:12Not a week would pass without some small thrill.
00:38:16The good old days, huh?
00:38:19Now everything is legal.
00:38:21Sunny Acres is truly a rest home.
00:38:25Well, keeps you out of jail, Pop.
00:38:28This is a jail.
00:38:30You know, in the past 12 months,
00:38:33the youngest woman I've examined was 73 years old.
00:38:39Really?
00:38:40Did anybody ever tell you you have a beautiful form?
00:38:48I appreciate that.
00:38:51Why don't we go into my office?
00:38:52We can talk better.
00:38:54Oh, this is fine right here.
00:38:56Thanks.
00:38:57Okay.
00:39:00Oh, Doc, we were talking about Helena Vargas.
00:39:04Oh, yes, yes, yes.
00:39:06I remember Helena.
00:39:08Oh, what beauty, what fire.
00:39:12What a form.
00:39:14When exactly did she have her abortion?
00:39:19Abortion?
00:39:21Yeah, didn't she come here to have an abortion?
00:39:23No.
00:39:25There was no abortion for Helena.
00:39:27I delivered her baby, a boy, a beautiful boy.
00:39:30Sure?
00:39:31Am I sure?
00:39:33Why, of course, she worked here for three months afterwards
00:39:36until the adoption.
00:39:38Adoption?
00:39:40She was really quite brilliant, you know.
00:39:44Uneducated, but brilliant.
00:39:46A head that could grasp a problem.
00:39:49Who adopted the baby?
00:39:51Oh, I don't know.
00:39:52Rich people from some fancy suburb.
00:39:55Like her family in Miami, maybe, or someplace like that?
00:39:58No, no, no, no, no, definitely no.
00:40:00Nothing like that for Helena.
00:40:29Hey, I'm sorry.
00:40:30Here I am having my dinner, and I forgot all about yours.
00:40:35Just hung up on something I can't figure.
00:40:46Here you go.
00:40:47Come on.
00:40:58Clarence, don't get pushy.
00:41:00Come on.
00:41:09Christy Love here.
00:41:11Christy?
00:41:13Hi, Christy.
00:41:16This is Syl.
00:41:18Sylvia?
00:41:20Guess what, babe?
00:41:23Baby, guess what?
00:41:25Oh, honey, did I do that to you?
00:41:28Did I do what to what?
00:41:31Sylvia, tell me where you are, and I'll come and get you.
00:41:35No, no, no.
00:41:37Come over to my house.
00:41:40And...
00:41:40I want to talk to you.
00:41:43Mary.
00:41:45Uh...
00:41:46This...
00:41:47by...
00:42:06That's her.
00:42:46Celia?
00:42:50Celia?
00:42:51Celia?
00:42:53Oh, hi.
00:42:55Hi.
00:42:57I must doze off.
00:42:59It's okay.
00:43:00Come on.
00:43:01Come on, honey.
00:43:01Let's get you on the bed.
00:43:02Yes, ma'am.
00:43:04Okay.
00:43:06Okay.
00:43:07Okay.
00:43:09There we go.
00:43:10Come on.
00:43:13Careful.
00:43:14Get going.
00:43:25Okay, baby.
00:43:27You're gonna be all right.
00:43:29Just take it easy.
00:43:32What did I go and do?
00:43:35I went and had a little...
00:43:39a little slip.
00:43:42It's all right, darling.
00:43:44You can start all over.
00:43:46That's right.
00:43:51Judy, honey.
00:43:53You wanna tell me?
00:43:59See?
00:44:02See, you...
00:44:03You...
00:44:04You don't know Helena.
00:44:06She's such a real friend.
00:44:10So, every once in a while...
00:44:15Every six months...
00:44:18I'll go see the baby.
00:44:20Baby?
00:44:22I'll tell her how he's doing.
00:44:24What baby?
00:44:25He ain't no baby no more.
00:44:28He's a big boy now.
00:44:33He's cute.
00:44:35He's really cute.
00:44:37Celia, honey.
00:44:38Has...
00:44:38Has Helena ever talked about or...
00:44:41mentioned a ledger?
00:44:44Celia?
00:44:45Mm-hmm.
00:44:47Got a whole lot of black in her.
00:44:50Celia.
00:44:51She's almost his old sister.
00:45:11Somebody forgot to shut the door.
00:45:14Come back here, woman!
00:45:15Come on!
00:45:22Here.
00:45:47Come on!
00:46:24I would if I could, but Christy, that information is not merely privileged, it's almost sacred.
00:46:31Myron, that's why I came to you, old buddy?
00:46:34I mean, that's like the initial guarantee.
00:46:37When a couple adopts a child, they are assured that the natural mother will never learn.
00:46:43Myron, now you're acting like a natural mother.
00:46:46Even with a court order, I don't believe that you can oblige any adoption agency to reveal the name and
00:46:52a...
00:46:52Hey, Myron, I'll keep your silly old secret, man, I promise.
00:46:55Come on, you can get me that information, use your contact.
00:47:01Hey, uh, don't make me do this, okay?
00:47:06Uh, all right, hey, listen, I happen to know that your sister Rita has been fooling around with...
00:47:10Christy!
00:47:11Myron, are you going to help me or not?
00:47:13I'm going to help you.
00:47:26Thanks, old buddy.
00:47:37That one's 5.36.
00:47:39We're getting close.
00:47:445.40.
00:47:46Ah, there it is, Walter.
00:47:47Right there on the mailbox.
00:47:49Kilday, John, Kilday.
00:47:51Okay.
00:47:54Look, that must be him.
00:48:00But which one?
00:48:08Hmm, which one is Kilday?
00:48:21Uh, tell me, Coach, how many teams do you have competing in this park, please?
00:48:24Eight.
00:48:24Eight.
00:48:24We've got eight.
00:48:25And, uh, the kids are really terrific.
00:48:28Yeah, they look pretty terrific.
00:48:31What, uh, paper are you with again?
00:48:33Uh, uh, Jesus Press.
00:48:34You see, we're doing a series of articles on community athletic programs.
00:48:39Uh, Coach, do you think we could maybe call the boys in for a team picture?
00:48:44Sure.
00:48:45Let's go.
00:48:53Hey, you look really good out there.
00:48:55Hey, why don't we, uh, get in a straight line and we can have some pictures taken and I can
00:48:59get your names, okay?
00:49:00Okay.
00:49:00Let's see how fast we can get the line.
00:49:02Come on, quickly.
00:49:03Straight line.
00:49:04Let's go.
00:49:06Okay.
00:49:06And you are?
00:49:07Andrew Mason.
00:49:09Andrew...
00:49:10Mason.
00:49:12Calvin Farnsworth, ma'am.
00:49:16All right.
00:49:17Welcome.
00:49:19John Kilday, Jr.
00:49:23I'm sorry, could you repeat that, please?
00:49:26John Kilday.
00:49:28K-I-L-E-A-Y, Jr.
00:49:34Thank you, John.
00:49:36You wouldn't want to forget the junior.
00:49:43And you are?
00:49:45Henry Hink, Stinson III.
00:49:49If you say so, sugar.
00:50:01Hey.
00:50:02Hey, you got a warrant?
00:50:03You want to see me, sweetheart.
00:50:05I can save your skin.
00:50:06Right.
00:50:07Just like you did with Celia.
00:50:08You stick your big nose...
00:50:09Hey, just shut up.
00:50:10Just shut your face.
00:50:14Now, Celia was my friend and she was doing just fine until she got tangled up with you and your
00:50:19kid.
00:50:21What?
00:50:22What?
00:50:23What?
00:50:23What?
00:50:23Kid.
00:50:23Hey, come on.
00:50:24I know about your kid.
00:50:25I'm not talking about that nephew of yours in Miami either.
00:50:28So let's just stop with the games already, okay?
00:50:30Hey, you get out of here, okay?
00:50:30You just leave me alone.
00:50:31Tomorrow I'll prove to you, I know.
00:50:32Just lay off on me.
00:50:33Cortino's coming.
00:50:34I don't want you here.
00:50:35Cortino?
00:50:36Yes, I want to know about him too.
00:50:37And about that ledger and all that junk he's shipping in here.
00:50:40He's due here any minute and I don't want you here.
00:50:43So get out!
00:50:43Why don't you want him to see me here with you, huh?
00:50:45How come you're afraid of me, huh?
00:50:47Tell me that.
00:50:48Get out!
00:50:50You know what?
00:50:51I bet you Cortino doesn't know about your real kid, does he?
00:50:53He thinks that nephew of yours in Miami is your boy.
00:50:56Baby, you got him snow too, don't you?
00:50:58Well, why all the lies?
00:50:59Why all the pretense, huh?
00:51:03Just cool it.
00:51:05Just cool it.
00:51:06Now I'm going to do you a favor.
00:51:08You ever been to the city museum, huh?
00:51:10I didn't think so.
00:51:11But you'll be there tomorrow morning, you hear?
00:51:1310 a.m. sharp.
00:51:14And we can make a deal.
00:51:15Now open the door.
00:51:26It took you so long to open the door.
00:51:30Well, Mr. Cortino.
00:51:32Never thought I'd be meeting up with you.
00:51:34Cop.
00:51:36So, this is the lady who's been bothering you, huh?
00:51:39The one and only.
00:51:40Yeah, well, I'll see you.
00:51:42Sure.
00:51:42All right.
00:51:42Go ahead, little big shot.
00:51:45Miss Barger and I are having an engagement.
00:51:47Yeah, well, have a good time.
00:51:48See you later.
00:51:50I'll have Mr. Loomis take you to your car.
00:51:53You don't have to bother, really.
00:51:55Oh, no bother at all.
00:51:57Everywhere you go these days, degenerates.
00:52:01Good night.
00:52:03Hey, good night.
00:52:07Come on, Shorty.
00:52:21Look, I told you, she forced her way in.
00:52:23What for?
00:52:23The damn ledger again.
00:52:25Oh, that's funny.
00:52:27Now, that is really funny.
00:52:29It is not funny.
00:52:31Now, cut that out.
00:52:32Oh, come on.
00:52:33Everything's gonna be beautiful.
00:52:35Oh, tomorrow's our big day.
00:52:44You're all right, aren't you?
00:53:07What?
00:53:07If you're carrying a concealed weapon, I'm obliged to take you in.
00:53:31This is pretty nice in here, isn't it?
00:53:33Did you look at this?
00:53:34What is this, teak?
00:53:36It's kind of nice, isn't it?
00:54:04You're not so ...
00:54:07I'm so sorry.
00:54:17Not the best.
00:54:18What do you mind?
00:54:18I do not care.
00:54:18I do not care.
00:54:18No, no.
00:54:19No, no.
00:54:21No, no, no.
00:54:27What do you mind?
00:54:28No, no, no, no, no.
00:54:39I'm obliged to warn you that anything you say may be used against you.
00:54:43You're under arrest.
00:54:52Are you sure those pictures are Helena Vargas' kid?
00:54:55A-1 positive.
00:55:00Well, it's ten after ten and she hasn't shown yet.
00:55:04She will.
00:55:06That's one scared lady, believe me.
00:55:07She's scared to death of Cortino finding out anything about this kid.
00:55:11Well, I suppose Cortino does know about both kids, which is which.
00:55:15Well, then you'd win our little bet, wouldn't you?
00:55:20You didn't mean her, didn't you?
00:55:21Didn't I?
00:55:56You didn't mean her, didn't you?
00:55:56It's between the two of us.
00:55:57Oh, this is my boss, Captain Reardon.
00:56:00Uh-uh.
00:56:01Hold on, darling.
00:56:03A present.
00:56:06So what's that?
00:56:11So take a look.
00:56:16So a kid, so what?
00:56:19That's not your kid?
00:56:21No, he's a stranger.
00:56:24Hey, look, you pig.
00:56:25I don't know what you're trying to do, but I don't know that kid.
00:56:31Uh-huh.
00:56:32His name is John Kilday, Jr.
00:56:33He resides at 550 Garden Drive, Rolling Hills.
00:56:37I don't know that kid.
00:56:44Yeah.
00:56:53Oh, yeah.
00:57:04Oh.
00:57:08Hey, you've never seen him before, have you?
00:57:13Not since he was a baby.
00:57:18How come?
00:57:20She knew all about him.
00:57:22Where he...
00:57:24If she saw him, she'd want him.
00:57:28Look, Miss Varga.
00:57:31The kid's name, address, dates, and the name of his real mother.
00:57:37Helena Varga.
00:57:38Now, you have some information that we want, Miss Varga.
00:57:41I don't know anything, nothing.
00:57:44Miss Varga, you see this envelope?
00:57:47It's addressed to Enzo Cortino.
00:57:50Now, there's a stamp on it, and it's ready to be mailed.
00:57:53Now, there's a mailbox right over there by the entrance.
00:57:56Now, what do you say? You feel like talking or what?
00:57:58So you send him a picture. What?
00:58:01So what?
00:58:02You know, for years, you've been pretending to Cortino
00:58:05that your nephew in Miami is your real kid.
00:58:08Right?
00:58:09Now, why is it so important to keep Cortino dumb about this kid?
00:58:13Why are you protecting him, hiding him from Cortino?
00:58:16Now, wait a minute.
00:58:17It's not going to be that easy, Miss Varga.
00:58:19Now, we'll make a trade.
00:58:21The kid for the information.
00:58:24You wouldn't put that kid's life in danger.
00:58:26You wouldn't do that.
00:58:42Please.
00:58:53Please.
00:58:55OK.
00:58:56Casey?
00:58:57Casey?
00:59:13So, what do you want?
00:59:14You know what we want, Helena, Cortino's ledger.
00:59:18Oh, that's funny.
00:59:20Oh, come on, Miss Vodka, let's get to it.
00:59:22Get to it?
00:59:24That's really funny, Mr. Reardon, because you are, you are with it.
00:59:29See, it's right here in the room with you.
00:59:31It's me, stupid, me.

01:00:29When the next shipment comes in.
01:00:31How, why, everything.
01:00:34In exchange, immunity, protection all the way down the line.
01:00:39Come on, we'll talk about it as we're walking.
01:00:41Now, first I want to see my kid.
01:00:44Well, we can arrange that.
01:00:45Now!
01:00:49Because later it won't matter.
01:00:50Because I'll be dead.
01:00:52And I want to see him.
01:00:55Just once.
01:00:59And you don't get anything out of me until I do, I swear it.
01:01:06You know, for somebody in your business, you've got quite a problem.
01:01:09You've got feelings, girl.
01:01:12Yeah?
01:01:14What about you?
01:01:21You, uh...
01:01:24Saw him?
01:01:26My son?
01:01:27Yeah, just for a minute, though.
01:01:31He's a nice little boy, too.
01:01:37His old man was all right, I guess.
01:01:40I was just a baby.
01:01:44Cortino is, uh, pretty sure of you, isn't he?
01:01:48He was sure.
01:01:51My photographic memory became important.
01:01:53No one could steal the record.
01:01:55Nothing written.
01:01:57And to ensure my loyalty, he let me know Raymond's life would always be at stake.
01:02:02I had him convinced Raymond was my son.
01:02:05And you kept up that game, knowing your nephew's life was on the line?
01:02:08I was crazy.
01:02:10I had to protect him.
01:02:11He had to be safe no matter what.
01:02:12I-I couldn't stop.
01:02:17Hey, does that vehicle look familiar to you?
01:02:23Turn up just in case.
01:02:25Right.
01:02:28Hey.
01:02:44Hey, they're really tailing us now.
01:02:47Yeah.
01:02:47Well-
01:02:48We'd better head somewhere else.
01:02:55THE END

01:06:24What?
01:06:29Here they come. Here they are.
01:06:36The END
01:06:51Which one is he, huh? Which one? Do you see him over there? The one with the pole.
01:06:55The END

01:10:57Whatever you go these days.
01:10:59Degenerates.
01:11:00You ought to arrest Sugar.
01:11:11Thanks for the ride.
01:11:12Well, it was the least I could do.
01:11:14You didn't think I was going to put you in a cab and let you go home alone.
01:11:22Where's your key?
01:11:23Oh, I can manage. Thank you.
01:11:25Well, there's no doubt about that.
01:11:28Oh, ho, ho.
01:11:28Oh, that's not a compliment.
01:11:32Yeah, as a matter of fact, it is.
01:11:34You did a very good job.

01:11:39Well, good night, Mr. Ridden.
01:11:41Good night?
01:11:42Well, now, wait a minute.
01:11:44I, um, thought we'd have a nightcap.
01:11:48Uh, you know, it's been a rare day and I am very tired.
01:11:52All I want to do is get in my tub, excuse me, and soak for about a week and a
01:11:57half.
01:11:59Well, I just thought that, uh, we'd have a little drink.
01:12:04Oh, did you now?
01:12:06If you remember, I won the bet.
01:12:09Okay, so why don't we celebrate by having a nightcap?
01:12:19Okay, then, but just one.
01:12:21And that's my limit.
