00:07:39And his honor has chosen none other than General Wellman and staff to be his observation team.
00:07:46Yeah, I get the picture.
00:08:45It's yours.
00:08:46It's yours.
00:08:47Welcome, sir.
00:08:48Let's go.
00:08:50Yeah, I got it.
00:08:51Let's go.
00:09:13Let's go.
00:09:17And as a United States senator, I decided to come here myself to be among these heroic young men and
00:09:25to learn all I can about the situation so I can brief the president on exactly how things stand.
00:09:31Tell us, Senator, does Lieutenant Morris have anything to do with this decision?
00:09:38Well, of course, I'm proud of my son, I can't deny that.
00:09:40But I'm not here as a father of a particular soldier.
00:09:45I'm here as the representative of all the fathers, of all the American fathers whose sons have come to Vietnam
00:09:52to fight a just and necessary war, as I'm sure the father of this sergeant is.
00:09:59Too bad I was an orphan.
00:10:05What do you mean, Sergeant?
00:10:07Speak up.
00:10:13This goddamn war is a fucking waste.
00:10:18I'll be glad to go home.
00:10:26Bastard.
00:10:26They had a court-martial, you.
00:10:32Easy, Sarge. Take it easy.
00:10:40Senator, we'll be arriving in just a few minutes.
00:10:47Ah, yes.
00:10:48Another very important part of our trip is the direct contact we will establish with all the Vietnamese people.
00:10:56They have a hunger to be free.
00:10:58I intend to go among them and testify to the commitment on the part of our nation to save them
00:11:05from communism.
00:11:06I wouldn't do that, Senator.
00:11:09Just asking for trouble going off into that village.
00:11:11If you're afraid, Sergeant, you can stay here in the boat.
00:11:15I didn't come to Vietnam for vacation.
00:11:27I'll see you.
00:11:28Thanks a lot.
00:11:38Take it easy.
00:11:42I'm African as a Marine.
00:11:42Oh my God.
00:11:43Welcome!
00:11:47Welcome!
00:11:59Welcome!
00:12:02Welcome!
00:12:03Good morning!
00:12:06Hey!
00:12:07Hey!
00:12:12Let's go!
00:12:13Good morning!
00:12:15Good morning!
00:12:19Good morning!
00:12:36Good morning!
00:12:44Good morning!
00:12:47Help me!
00:13:19Don't touch that, Senator!
00:13:42Back to the wall!
00:13:43Wait!
00:13:47Wait!
00:13:48No!
00:13:54No!
00:13:56No!
00:14:21Get on the stretch, go on.
00:14:23Check this one out.
00:14:30Sir?
00:14:30Yes?
00:14:32There's no sign of Darkin's body.
00:14:34What do you mean?
00:14:35The men have looked everywhere.
00:14:36It's just not to be found.
00:14:37Keep looking. You must be here somewhere.
00:14:40Yes, sir.
00:14:41Hey.
00:14:42That son of a bitch.
00:14:44It's just a little bit more.
00:14:52I can't.
00:14:53I can't.
00:15:01I can't.
00:15:02I can't.
00:15:06I can't.
00:15:07I can't.
00:15:08I can't.
00:15:09I can't.
00:15:11I can't.
00:15:12I can't.
00:15:13I can't.
00:15:22Oh, my God.
00:15:46Oh, my God.
00:16:13Oh, my God.
00:16:36Are you American?
00:16:38Yep.
00:16:40Got some proof.
00:16:53Nice to meet you.
00:17:10Okay, Charlie.
00:17:15Okay, swing your ass backwards, please.
00:17:19Way to go, Charlie. Okay, whoa.
00:17:41Don't drop it.
00:17:47Hey, Mark, how about a beer?
00:17:49Yeah, how about two?
00:18:18Okay, Phil, five seconds to wrap up. Go.
00:18:21The impression of shock caused by the horrible death of Senator Morris lies heavy in the air.
00:18:26I'm Phil Ackerman, your BGF news correspondent, and I'll have further news later.
00:18:33Where's Ludlam? Won't leave?
00:18:35He's on a mission in Tang Pao.
00:18:37Well, at least that's some good news.
00:18:42Sergeant Darkin, sir.
00:18:48Interesting getup, Sergeant.
00:18:53Is it a masquerade? I'd like to know.
00:18:55Just a survival tactic, General.
00:18:59Andy, get all the information you can on this Deserter, okay?
00:19:03Have it on my desk here within an hour. In the meantime, lock him up.
00:19:06Are you nuts?
00:19:08Hey, watch what you're saying, sonny boy.
00:19:16May I at least know what I'm accused of?
00:19:18This goddamn war is a fucking waste.
00:19:24I'll be glad to go home.
00:19:31Bastard.
00:19:33Get him.
00:19:37What you just heard was a tape recording taken by a television crew, which was on the boat carrying the
00:19:42Senator.
00:19:43You have freely admitted, Sergeant Darkin, that the first of those two voices is yours.
00:19:48The second has been identified as that of Senator Morris' son, William, who was currently serving a tour of duty
00:19:54here.
00:19:54It is the conclusion of this preliminary hearing that your words betray reprehensible cowardice before our enemy.
00:20:01Sergeant Darkin, Sergeant Darkin, we have concluded it is painfully obvious that when the attack came, you fled, abandoning your
00:20:08companions.
00:20:09That's a lie.
00:20:10That's a lie.
00:20:11I've already told you that I remember an explosion.
00:20:14Next thing I know, I'm in the river.
00:20:17Convenient thing, Abnesia.
00:20:19In this particular case, you were lucky enough to recover full use of your faculty just at the moment of
00:20:24your arrest.
00:20:25You will be court-martialed.
00:20:28Until the time that you are transferred back to the United States, you will be detained at the Van Tee
00:20:33Military Prison, where you will be held under strictest surveillance.
00:20:37Furthermore, it is the intention of the board of this preliminary hearing to make a written recommendation to the official
00:20:43court-martial that you be dealt with as mercilessly as military law provides.
00:20:47Take him away.
00:21:34Take him away.
00:21:37That's it.
00:21:40You got it.
00:22:29Okay, out.
00:22:33Move.
00:22:52Here's the file on the prisoner.
00:22:53Let's take a look.
00:23:10Dark and bright.
00:23:12We've been hoping you'd show up.
00:23:15Hey, gents.
00:23:16There's someone here I think you'd like to meet.
00:23:19Allow me to introduce our new guest.
00:23:31We never run away from the Charlies.
00:23:34This is what your Viet Cong friends had to do to me.
00:23:38For these reasons, there's a very special ceremony the prisoners have arranged for you.
00:23:46They call it the Truth Tunnel.
00:23:51Let's go.
00:23:52They're waiting.
00:24:08I'll show you.
00:24:25No kids getting hit heavy.
00:24:33Get your ass off the ground, Darkin, and I'll show you your hotel room.
00:24:38Oh, he needs help.
00:24:54Sure hope you like it here.
00:24:56Nothing but the best for you.
00:25:24We've all had that kind of welcome, Frank.
00:25:27Join the club.
00:25:29I'm Bronx.
00:25:30I never figured out why people call me that, but they do.
00:25:34I'm supposed to have killed a couple MPs.
00:25:37That's Nolan.
00:25:38He used to run this cat house in Saigon.
00:25:41Little operation, only one war.
00:25:43Never caused nobody any trouble.
00:25:45Problem was, she was his commanding officer's wife.
00:25:48That's Fela.
00:25:49It was his boxing match over at the Enlistment's Club one night.
00:25:54He disagreed with the referee and showed him what a rabbit punch is really all about.
00:25:58In the groin.
00:26:00This little angel, his stash.
00:26:03He killed this colonel who was yelling at him too much.
00:26:05He was only a chicken colonel.
00:26:07Don't know why they made such a fuss.
00:26:08Yeah.
00:26:08Anyway, like I said, welcome to the club.
00:26:44I guess one of those is mine.
00:26:46Can't hear you.
00:26:47I said, I guess one of those is mine.
00:26:51Uh-huh.
00:26:54Want to come and get it?
00:26:58Swell.
00:27:37I said, I guess one of those is mine.
00:27:52Yeah, what is it, Sarge?
00:27:53I just got this from headquarters.
00:27:55Dead Kong across the border at Kuntum.
00:27:57We have to get our asses out of here.
00:28:00There's not much time.
00:28:01Let's go.
00:28:02Got it, Sarge.
00:28:23What?
00:28:23Walk on.
00:28:24We're not going in, you know what's that.
00:28:28We're not going in.
00:28:29We're not going in.
00:28:29We're not going in.
00:28:30We're not going in.
00:28:31Harvey.
00:28:33We're not going in here now.
00:28:36I'm going in.
00:28:56You have to get out of here on the double.
00:28:58You have to get the turtle first.
00:28:59Just the other side.
00:29:18Yes, Major, the Viet Cong are all around.
00:29:20It is hard right now.
00:29:29Get this thing going, Goddammit.
00:29:32What about those men, Sarge?
00:29:35They are just scum, Pete.
00:29:37I can't get moving.
00:30:09I'll take them over on firing squad any day.
00:30:11Get in.
00:30:43Okay, listen, all of you.
00:30:46There's something we got to talk over, first and only is survival, since you're the only
00:30:54one of us here who's ever fought in this stinking jungle, figure the only way out is to stay
00:31:01together.
00:31:03What do you say?
00:31:08We can do that.
00:31:14We can do that.
00:31:18We can do that.
00:31:19We can do that.
00:31:21We can do that.
00:31:29We can do that.
