Why Men Leave Home aka Secrets of Beauty (1951)
Drama | 16 July 1951 (USA)

Ginger Waldron was preparing for a screen test when she first made the acquaintance of innovative make-up artist Westmore, and her family life was in shambles. It seems that Waldron's mother had recently suspected her husband of being unfaithful, and now Waldron has asked Westmore for advice on how to save her parent's marriage. When Westmore transforms the average housewife into a glamorous beauty queen worthy of the silver screen with little more than some make-up magic and a stylish new hair-do, her husband John takes one look at his newly enhanced wife and prepares to fulfill his vows with gusto.

00:00the everyday stuff would be fine.
00:02I should have written that they were coming.
00:04How long do you expect me to go on living like this?
00:07Maybe you think I'm happy the way things are around here.
00:10Look, I've worked very hard for ten years to make our home.
00:13Our home? Your home, you mean?
00:16As far as I'm concerned, I'm just a star hoarder.
00:18Oh yes, my meals are ready on time,
00:20my laundry's taken care of, I got the chair I like.
00:22Then what else do you expect?
00:24What any man expects when he gets married? A wife.
00:28Haven't I given you the best years of my life?
00:31All right, who made them the best years?
00:34Well, if you're so unhappy, perhaps you'd like a divorce.
00:37Maybe I would.
00:39If it weren't for Ginger, I'd...
00:43I didn't hear her come in.
00:48Hello, sweetheart.
00:50Oh, I spilled my milk, Mama, but I'll wipe it up.
00:53Mother will do it, darling. You run along.
00:55You'll be late for dancing school.
00:56Yes, Mother, I was just going.
01:08Ruth.
01:09Yes?
01:10I'm sorry, I lost my temper.
01:13I guess I'm a bit nervous these days.
01:15You're the doctor. You should know what's wrong.
01:18I do.
01:20Must you do that, Ruth? I want to talk to you.
01:22Well, I can't let it dry into the linoleum.
01:26I never should have chosen this light background.
01:28I'm just a slave to it, trying to keep it clean.
01:32Ruth, years ago, when we started out,
01:35we used to sit in that two-room apartment
01:37and dream about what it would be like to have a home of our own.
01:41I had three patients then.
01:43Now, two of them weren't working.
01:46We used to give each other IOUs for Christmas, remember?
01:49It's because I remember those things
01:51that I take such good care of this house.
01:53Maybe that's the trouble.
01:55We built a home and wound up with a house.
02:03A place for everything and everything in its place.
02:06Well, for goodness sakes, what's wrong with that?
02:08Plenty. Maybe I want to come home at night
02:10and scatter newspapers on the floor,
02:12have people drop in for potluck,
02:14or suddenly both of us go out on the town.
02:16I'd like to see you open a bottle of champagne just once
02:19instead of putting every dime into some new gadget for the house.
02:22John, what's happened to you?
02:24What's happened to us?
02:26We've simply grown up.
02:29Or at least I have.
02:36John, if you still want to ask Harvey and Jane to...
02:40Forget it. I'll take them out to the country club.
