On July 5, the American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism published a Swedish study that suggests that being obese doesn't necessarily mean the fat provides insulation. The University Of Stockholm conduced a study on mice that showed that extra body weight did not discernably turn up the metabolism to create more body heat. Head researcher, Alexander Fischern stated, ""In contrast to established views, we demonstrate here that at least in mice, obesity is not associated with increased insulation, and obesity thus does not in this way affect the metabolism of mice." He also went on to say that even if obesity did create an insulation effect it is doubtful that would help to control weight gain or loss.
