00:00Hey it's Leila again with Daniel.
00:18The next stop on our SoCal tour through the San Fernando Valleys.
00:22Hi!
00:23Sorry I'm late.
00:26Are you good?
00:28Today we're hang gliding for the first time with the good people at Winsport.
00:32We met up with them at their mountain location in Sillimar, California, located 45 minutes
00:36outside of LA.
00:38Interesting fact, you actually can't be given a hang gliding tour in the United States,
00:42so we needed to become student pilots through Winsport in order for us to go hang gliding.
00:47Before our lesson, we decided to hike to the top of Cagle Mountain Peak, which is 3,500
00:52feet or 1 kilometer above sea level, and to be honest with you, it was so much harder
00:56than I expected.
00:57Yeah, don't selfie and hike, guys.
01:00Hi!
01:01Okay, Leila, Daniel, and our new friend Josh!
01:04Josh is our hang gliding instructor.
01:06We're about to do the hike, which apparently not a lot of people do, so.
01:10Very few.
01:11You're the only students who have done it.
01:13Yes!
01:14There we go.
01:15Great!
01:17You definitely have extended the definition of trail with this thing.
01:28There's Leila falling behind.
01:30Gotta catch up.
01:32I'm like a foot shorter than you.
01:35This is a rough one.
01:37Especially for Leila.
01:39I'm struggling.
01:41You're struggling.
01:43Not doing so bad.
01:45It's so steep.
01:51It's so steep.
01:53Everything is so steep.
01:55It's steep and steep and hot and hot.
01:57It's so steep and hot and hot.
01:59Where are we now?
02:00Probably just over 3,000 feet, so just a couple hundred more to climb until we get to go to
02:04the top and fly off.
02:06Holy moly!
02:07It's just past the top.
02:09Oh, damn it!
02:11Pick those knees up.
02:13Did you see that?
02:14Oh my god, really?
02:15Woo, we did it!
02:17Yes!
02:18Perfect flying weather.
02:19Perfect.
02:20Let's do it.
02:21Sunny, windy, nice weather.
02:22Let's go.
02:30My name is Josh, and I'm the assistant manager at Wind Sports Hang Gliding School.
02:33I'm also a professional tandem hang gliding instructor.
02:36My name is Andrew Beam, and I'm a professional tandem hang gliding instructor.
02:40I've been flying hang gliders for 35 years.
02:42I've been hang gliding just almost nine years now.
02:44The sensation feels like having a wing connected to your back.
02:48It's very unique in aviation especially.
02:51We don't have a motor, so we just rely on Mother Nature to fly.
02:55The basic fundamentals of a hang glider and how you fly it are very simple.
02:58It's a very simple but very structurally sound aircraft.
03:02It's very strong in pound for pound.
03:04It's more strong than most single-engine airplanes.
03:07It can handle more positive and negative g-forces, stresses, on the glider
03:12than most single-engine airplanes.
03:14I love hang gliding.
03:15Come fly with me, it's amazing!
03:18I'm official.
03:20Yay!
03:21Let's do it.
03:22Time to glide, time to glide, time to glide.
03:25Alright, you ready?
03:26Yes.
03:27Players, we're going to start with a walk.
03:28Jump.

04:57We survived, we just finished, just landed, and it was...
05:00Amazing.
05:01So much fun.
05:02Oh my god.
05:03Hands down one of the best things we've done.
05:04Yeah, definitely...
05:05Top two!
05:06I'd say the big tip number one would be don't sleep on a futon the night before.
05:11Yeah, or eat bacon in the morning.
05:13Yeah, or eat bacon in the morning.
05:14Or buy only coffee.
05:15Kind of struggling there.
05:16Tip number two, definitely accept the ride up the mountain.
05:19Yeah, yes.
05:20I'd do the hike.
05:21Very tiring.
05:22Very steep.
05:23If you do want to have like a nice butt, go up the mountain.
05:27Tip number three, a lot of water.
05:29I think I chose my two water bottles.
05:32Listen to your instructors because they know best.
05:36Yeah, follow the two rules.
05:38Yeah.
05:39What are they?
05:40Oh, run with him and then strap in.
05:45Okay.
05:46Alright.
05:47Well, bye!
05:48See ya!
05:49Captain's Log, day four, still climbing.
05:56The hill is never ending.
05:58The grass, never ending.
06:00The sun, always shining.
06:02In Southern California.
06:04Captain's Log, day 13, we lost count.
06:07Captain's Log, I don't know what day it is.
06:11I am in Selomar, California.
06:14I need to send help.
06:17I have no water, no food, and no friends.
06:22Still going up this hill.
