New technology is aiming to mold concrete into once-impossible designs.

Swiss engineers created a prototype of a curved concrete roof that's based on a steel cable framework for support, polymer fabric to render the roof's shape, and the sprayed concrete. It's only 3 centimeters thick along the edges and 12 centimeters near the support beams.

The technology not only allows for more intricate designs, but could also save weight and cost. The design will be used as an actual roof in Switzerland, where it will be further enhanced with shaped solar panels.
