00:00 Angela Diffley, our international affairs editor, joins me in the studio.
00:03 We know, Angela, that Donald Trump is already in Florida.
00:07 How can we expect the data to pan out for him?
00:10 Yes, well, first of all, we should underline the massive security operation.
00:15 The Miami police chief has said we are prepared for up to 50,000 Trump supporters.
00:22 We don't want any violence.
00:24 It is worth noting that on Saturday at a rally in Georgia, Carrie Lake, who is one of Trump's
00:32 staunchest supporters, she is the defeated Republican candidate for governor of Arizona,
00:38 she said, "We will be supporting Trump."
00:41 And she pointed out that very many Trump supporters are NRA card-carrying gun owners.
00:48 And she said, "This is not a threat.
00:50 It is a public service announcement."
00:51 That gives you some idea of the strength of feeling, the anger and the potential threat
00:56 in the background there.
00:57 Miami, of course, hoping that everything will pass off peacefully.
01:01 And so far, of course, it is very early in Miami.
01:05 There isn't a great deal of sign of a huge number of supporters.
01:08 And there wasn't when he had his last indictment in New York on separate charges.
01:15 It wasn't a huge turnout among his supporters.
01:19 So Trump is already in Miami.
01:21 He's in his own golf hotel there.
01:24 He will go to the courthouse.
01:26 He will then take a tunnel, not go through the main entrance, take a tunnel, and we won't
01:31 see any pictures of handcuffs or anything.
01:34 He will then be treated like any other defendant and swear oath and enter a plea.
01:40 We understand he will enter a not guilty plea.
01:43 He's already let that be known.
01:45 And when a trial comes, he will be tried by 12 ordinary people from Miami, which is broadly
01:53 a very Republican, quite pro-Trump city.
01:58 But nevertheless, they will just be picked as any other jurors are.
02:02 And they can be, of course, challenged if either side feels that they have a separate
02:10 agenda.
02:11 We've seen it in the past, Donald Trump knows how to use events like this to capitalize,
02:18 some might say.
02:19 Is this, I suppose the question is, in terms of his political career, is this going to
02:23 be damaging or helpful?
02:26 It's hard to say at this stage.
02:28 He's going to go to New Jersey after these charges are read out and he enters his plea
02:32 where he will make an announcement about what has just happened.
02:37 He will no doubt say that the U.S. Justice Department has been weaponized.
02:41 He will no doubt portray himself as a victim as he also already has done.
02:45 This is a fundraising rally as well.
02:47 Next to that, you should look at what Bill Barr, Trump's former attorney general who
02:55 resigned, he has said if even half of these very detailed charges turn out to be true,
03:02 he said Trump is toast.
03:03 So, it appears to be a very detailed charge sheet with some quite significant allegations
03:12 in it.
03:13 So, as details emerge, as the primary race gets underway, it might be much more detrimental
03:20 to Trump.
03:21 At the moment, he's able to play the victim.
03:23 As details emerge, we'll see what happens.
03:25 At the moment, his rivals who are far behind him in the race for the Republican candidacy,
03:31 they're treading a fine line.
03:32 They don't want to be seen to be too critical of Trump.
03:34 Nevertheless, they are trying to underline the seriousness of those charges.
03:40 We'll see how it impacts on them and when they decide to perhaps turn on Trump if they
03:46 think it is to their advantage.
03:48 When it comes to the wider race, if Trump is picked as the Republican candidate, there
03:53 will be very many Americans who already loathe Trump but who also are very worried about
03:57 the idea of a sitting U.S. president facing trial.
04:02 How is that going to look around the world?
04:04 And also, a large number of people who are very disturbed by the fact that some of these
04:09 documents were labeled specifically as causing extremely grave damage to the United States.
04:17 It's a special category and they were lying around in his bathroom, in his bedroom.
04:23 So, we'll see for the moment he is playing the victim card as he does very successfully
04:28 and it certainly rouses his fans.
04:32 It will be interesting to see how things evolve with this indictment.
04:36 For now though, Angela, thank you very much indeed.
