00:10 Welcome to join us your home of independent fearless and credible journalism this afternoon over 1 million dollars
00:18 Stolen from sanitation minister Cecilia the past home in a billing way. We have details of all that has happened
00:26 Also on the NPP presidential race will take you to a T region where Alan
00:34 Tremontine engages some party delegates on his bit to lead the party into the 2024 elections
00:40 Plus this afternoon there's a call for the issue of terrorism to be seen and dealt with as a societal vice
00:50 Separated from religion. We have details of why the negative impact of technology must be the focus
00:57 rather than religion
00:59 We also live on Facebook YouTube Instagram and Twitter join news on TV my personal handle is at the Nana Aisha, please
01:07 Stay for details
01:09 You
01:11 So house helps of Cecilia Bernada Pina her husband Daniel or cycle for before an across secured quote for allegedly stealing monies and
01:38 items running into millions of Ghana cities
01:41 The said monies were allegedly stolen from the couple's room in their house at a billing way a suburb of Accra in the greater
01:48 Accra region
01:49 80 year old patients butchery and 30 year old Sarah J
01:53 Allegedly sold the monies and personal effects of the couple between the month of July and October
01:58 2022 the first accused
02:01 Patients also has her current and former boyfriends as well as her father all being drugs before the same court
02:08 My colleague Joseph a couple a joins us via zoom with further details of the court case first
02:14 Who are these five individuals and all of them in court because of stealing from the minister?
02:21 Now some minister 18 year old patients portraying 30 year old Sarah J then there's also
02:29 patients father then a current and ex-boyfriend
02:34 Benjamin and Malik and a father is quick with a who have also been arrested and charged the claim of stealing is against the house
02:40 Helps where as the current ex-boyfriend and father said to have received various amounts of money
02:46 Hence the offense of dishonestly receiving has been leveled against them
02:50 Do we have a sense of how exactly these huge amounts were stolen?
02:56 We're still in from her room which is shares with her husband in June this year and the minister discovered that some items and money
03:04 I've been stolen to reported a matter to the police
03:06 Patients are they have been found to have entered the room using a duplicate key
03:11 So once she was arrested and granted bill and because she was a nursing mother
03:15 She went into hiding get out with a boyfriend
03:18 She rented a three-bedroom apartment at Tamale for more than a hundred thousand cities as well as a store at a cost of
03:26 120 thousand cities and the police retrieved
03:28 $40,000 and more than 72 thousand cities from her upon a second arrest
03:34 She's also alleged to have bought a house at the cost of seventy thousand dollars at Amrani. I finished it with brand new items
03:41 She also bought a Hyundai Elantra for a boyfriend
03:44 Then give an ex-boyfriend an amount of 1 million cities and the father received 50,000 cities
03:50 Tell us about the other items that were
03:54 stolen
03:55 So they are clues that were valued at 95,000 cities in terms of jewelry's them in value that
04:01 $95,000 there's also can take lot wet about
04:05 90,000 cities and six sets of men's suits valued at three thousand dollars
04:10 Which are properties of the minister's husband and what charges are the suspects facing?
04:15 For the main individual the two ourselves the charges are stealing while the other three individuals have been charged with dishonestly receiving
04:24 Mmm, you talked about how one of them bought a house bought a car and rented an apartment
04:30 Do we know what the others use the monies for?
04:34 No, we do not know what specifically they used for in terms of what has been guarded so far information only relates to the activities
04:42 of the two main suspects and that is Sarah and
04:45 Shins who at one point in time so Sarah was the initial
04:49 House of the patients was the one who replaced their subsequently
04:53 So we are told that those are what they know in terms of what they have used
04:56 Yeah, money so for the other individuals, there's no information in that regard Joseph. What's the status of the trial as we speak?
05:02 But the initial stages now the charges have been leveled a plea was not taken at that particular stage
05:10 And so the case will go back to the circuit court where the app you'll be taking and then the courts would expect that a prosecutors
05:17 Will comply with disclosures I making available to the accused persons the evidence
05:22 They intend to use against them and what they've got it so far that once they get that
05:26 They've got to fix it dates for the trial itself to commence
05:29 Mmm, what could be their fate should they be found guilty Joseph?
05:33 These are serious offenses. I mean for offense like stealing
05:38 We are looking at up to 25 years possibly because that is if the judge decides to impose the maximum sentence
05:45 This honestly receiving is way less than that. But the key issue is there still an offense which has come
05:49 against those two individuals, especially
05:53 Joseph a couple a's legal affairs correspondent with those details of what has happened with the
06:01 Sanitation minister but another interesting angle to the development is the question about why a minister of state would keep such an amount of money
06:09 In her house, where does she get such an amount and why does she not bank it from the anti-corruption point of view?
06:17 How does this come across I've been joined by vitas as in is an anti-corruption campaigner as I believe you've been following this story
06:24 With keen interest the question about why such a huge amount of money must be kept at home
06:31 By no other person than a minister of state. Let me gauge your mood on what has happened
06:38 As for the question as to why such money kept in the house
06:42 It's obvious if you don't want it to be known
06:46 You know the president said she can pay the debt and so if you go and put it in your bank
06:53 Maybe one day there will be some investigation and they'll find out that you are carving this money
06:57 And so the best is to put it under your bed. And this was the first time that a
07:02 Worker has stolen money from under the bed of some politician
07:07 So it's obvious that you don't want it to be made public
07:10 So you keep it under your bed, but then it now shows that
07:14 It is dangerous to put it under your bed
07:17 But how does this come across to you that a minister of state
07:24 Is keeping such amounts of money in their homes
07:28 It's very unfortunate because at a time that the city is depreciating
07:36 Because we are short of dollars
07:38 One person keeps this amount of money in the house
07:42 We don't know how many politicians, how many business people
07:47 are hoarding dollars in their houses, pounds and euros
07:51 And so definitely it is unfortunate and it shouldn't have happened. But you see it is a way of
07:58 laundering money
08:00 You put in your house and then one day you take it and go and buy an asset
08:04 And then it becomes a legal asset, I mean an asset legally acquired
08:07 Or even later you go and put it in the bank and say, "Oh, this money I stole my property and bought it." So that is the thing
08:15 But for now
08:18 The only thing we can do is call for an investigation into this matter and I will talk about three institutions that can investigate this matter
08:25 The Office of Special Prosecutors
08:28 Talks about a lifestyle audit
08:32 Can they conduct a lifestyle audit on the cover?
08:35 Number two, the GRA
08:38 Should investigate the source of the money and if there's a need
08:43 To find out whether it is business, whether they are paying taxes, whether it is gifts, whether they are paying taxes, whether it is a
08:50 disposal of assets, whether they are paying taxes
08:53 And thirdly, for the Commission on Human Rights and Human Rights to find out
08:58 Did she declare her assets at the time that she became a minister? And if she declared,
09:03 Did she include this money and other assets?
09:07 If not, then she will be called upon to explain how she acquired this money when she was a minister of state
09:13 I'm grateful for your time. Vitas Azim is an anti-corruption campaigner. There's been so many reactions
09:22 Coming in on social media. The former president John Mahama has tweeted and he said one million
09:30 dollars plus three hundred a thousand
09:34 Euros and millions of Ghana cities in the Ghanaian ministers home
09:39 Scandalous, even if I genuinely acquired why keep millions of hard currency at home?
09:45 Well, Nana Ikufuwa do ever set a good example for the public office holders in this administration
09:52 And that's coming from former president John Rahmani Mahama. There's been a lot of comments on social media
09:59 I'll share a few with you can
10:01 Dazzling says they have such money in their homes yet
10:06 They went to the IMF imagine the amount of money that will be in the homes of Ken of Riyadh
10:11 But me and a coup for the most painful thing is Gary so case will come and defend this
10:17 Abut sadiq says God protect the house help so they don't get caught
10:21 Mean and for saying Abdul says they have taken their eggs crasher
10:26 May God bless Ghana and protect these two brave Ghanaians
10:30 Eben says greedy leaders and the Alpebie says sanitation and laundering
10:36 Money laundering our bedfellows this begs for serious investigations
10:43 Too many it's a family feud a political battle between an uncle you see was man and nephew
10:50 Manaf Ibrahim in the NPP parliamentary primary in the Asawase constituency
10:56 With opening of nominations for NPP often consequences the thought of an easy race for
11:02 Manaf a former contender in the race has turned to be rather fierce contest others are also joining the NPP
11:09 including Haji Ezeinab Salo the Ashanti regional financial secretary of the NPP who doubles as regional head of
11:15 Maslock Nana Ojema puts a spotlight on the Asawase constituency days into the opening of nominations
11:23 Asawase has been a safe seat for the National Democratic Congress in the Ashanti region
11:29 It is one of the two constituencies in the region never won by the NPP
11:33 The closest the party has come to victory in the constituency was in 2016 when they lost to NDC's
11:40 Muntaka Mubarak by less than six thousand votes
11:44 NPP leaders are optimistic of victory if unity is fostered
11:48 Noah Owusu is first vice chair of the Asawase constituency
11:52 The party is convinced that when we come out with unity anything can be done
11:59 Muntaka isn't a small person when it comes to politics but we know that as we fought him previously
12:06 we can now come together and do something positive for ourselves
12:12 A staff at the office of the president Yusuf Osman is the latest candidate to have picked forms to contest the primary
12:19 A Mamprusi from the home of the Sariki Mamprusi of the Zongo community in Kwazaa
12:24 Yusuf is well known among residents of Sabun Zongo
12:29 To his supporters he is a unifying candidate because he is the only one who has refused to align to any faction in the party at the constituency level
12:38 Baron Atuguba touts the ability of the aspirant
12:43 We went to 2020 election, lost like 20,000 votes
12:47 So if I said if you continue on the same path, you will be able to win
12:52 So if I said if you continue on doing the same thing, you will continue to get the same results
12:57 And there is some saying that people do some skirts and blouse in Asawase constituency
13:02 So in case you present the same candidate and the other candidate who thought that people do the underground campaign against him
13:08 What would they do? They would go the same way, go and do campaign against him
13:12 It won't affect the candidate but rather go and affect the party at large
13:16 So thinking that new face is the person that can unite both factions
13:20 From the household of the Sareki Mampusi also is Manaf Ibrahim
13:25 Who has long worked towards leading the NPP in the constituency
13:29 The former staff of the Vice President's office was suspended by the party in 2016
13:34 Denying him of an opportunity to contest the race after filing nomination
13:39 His supporters who contend his suspension was not justified
13:43 Say Manaf holds the party's key to Sase's
13:46 He is a unifier, he is a philanthropist of this Asawase constituency and the nation at large
13:52 Because not being in a leadership role as an MC or MP or parliamentary candidate or whatever
14:00 He is doing so well in the areas of health
14:04 Asawase is a very good person, he is a good person
14:06 He is the one who made me say brother, he is a good person
14:10 He is a good person, he is a good person because he is a good person
14:16 He is a good person, he is a good person
14:18 Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Treasurer of the NPP, Hadjia Zainab Salo
14:23 Has announced her interest to contest NPP Asawase Primary
14:27 The regional Masluk boss expressed concern over lack of unity among party members
14:33 If I start my campaign, I will beg them to vote for me
14:39 So that we are able to bring unity among the party
14:42 Our intention and our agenda as an NPP is to break the 8
14:46 But you can't break the 8 without unity
14:49 Asawase NPP, we are more than even NDC
14:53 It is expected that others will pick nominations in the party's bid to wrestle power from the 5th term incumbent MP, Muntaka Mubarak
15:03 For JOYNEWS, Nanaia Ojima, reporting
15:08 Let's stay a while longer on the NPP because Siyabu Abin Asamoa, one of the campaign coordinators for Alan Sherman
15:15 Says the team is disappointed by the decision taken by the National Executive Committee
15:21 To decentralize the superdelegates' congress to prune the presidential aspirants from 10 to 5
15:27 He said they expect NEC to put the necessary structures in place to ensure a successful contest
15:34 Speaking to JOYNEWS, Siyabu Abin says they nonetheless have hope Alan will make it through
15:40 He's been speaking to my colleague Peter Seno
15:45 How is Alan's camp taking all of this?
15:49 We are disappointed but we have hope and we believe that once the leadership have made this commitment
15:57 They will design and implement the decision in a way that will benefit everybody
16:02 So yes, we didn't accept the idea in the first place
16:07 And yes, once it's been decided we have to accept it
16:11 But we have a right to be disappointed
16:13 But in being disappointed doesn't mean we've rejected the decision
16:17 What was the wish for the Alan team?
16:20 We don't have to go back to all those arguments
16:24 You know that it was for a centralized situation
16:27 I'm not willing to go back to discuss why and how
16:31 We've gone past that
16:33 The decision by the National Executive Meeting, the second highest decision-making body of the party
16:40 Is binding on all of us
16:42 They will have a regional special delegates conference
16:45 The important thing we have to realize is that the real election is still ahead of us in November
16:49 This is an administrative process
16:51 A mere requirement to reduce the numbers of aspirants to a manageable size of 5
16:59 It is for the party leadership to implement the decision in a way that meets the constitutional threshold
17:05 In a way that brings credibility to the party's processes
17:09 Because the party needs credibility and trust as we go forward into the general election
17:15 Does this affect the campaign of Alan in any way?
17:18 Absolutely not
17:20 The special delegates conference, like I said, is an administrative process
17:24 It's not the main thing
17:26 You simply pass through, literally, and continue to campaign
17:31 As we are now, campaigning in Dambai, Kratie, East
17:36 And very soon we'll move on to the other regions
17:39 Let's go live to my colleague Peter Seno, who is in the Ochi region monitoring events for us
17:47 Peter, we know that Alan Chairman Ting is wrapping up his campaign in the Ochi region
17:53 What has he been telling the delegates and what has been their response?
17:59 Currently we are in Dambai, the regional capital, where he is meeting delegates
18:10 It's a mistake, as we may have heard
18:14 The paramount of all is to put all party executives on a payroll
18:19 Get them a pension scheme and also get two local contractors
18:24 At a local level, when he becomes president, to execute local contracts
18:28 These are the main pillars of his message that is resonating well with delegates
18:34 He also says that he is the only candidate with a national appeal who has electability
18:40 Delegates should listen to the voices of people who are not even members of the NPP
18:46 That they wanted someone who would appeal to the market of the people
18:50 That has been his message here in the Ochi region
18:54 So far, he is wrapping up his call just to get out of the region
19:00 Monitoring the NPP's campaign towards the superdelegates' conference on August 26
19:10 Where to be for all of that is your election headquarters
19:16 The Bok Oil Storage and Transportation Company says it only has fuel reserve to last for weeks
19:24 And would have to rely on private sector players if there is a major crisis that cuts external supply into the country
19:31 BOST is mandated to build strategic reserve stocks to meet a minimum of six weeks of national consumption in the short and medium term
19:41 And to increase stock level to 12 weeks in the long term
19:45 But the managing director of BOST, Edwin Alfred Provencal, has revealed to joinees that the company has not been able to build a reserve since 2016 due to lack of funds
19:56 He spoke to George Riafi on PM Express Business Edition last night
20:00 I'm asked, do you have strategic reserves?
20:04 What I say is that we have inventory. I don't call that inventory reserves
20:09 Where help, Pakojo, a layman working in
20:13 So I have petroleum products in my tanks
20:16 But they are not strategic reserves. Why?
20:19 Because nobody is paying for strategic reserves
20:22 The strategic reserve levy, which is meant solely for strategic reserves, has been zeroed out since 2006
20:31 By who?
20:33 I don't know. The NPA, obviously. Then government in power
20:39 And so nobody is paying for the country to hold strategic reserves
20:43 So what we depend on is the inventory, the stocks in tanks that are monitored by NPA to ensure that at any particular point in time we are not running out
21:01 Mr. Provencal, for the layman again, when I think about BOST, the first thing that comes to my mind is strategic reserves
21:11 Now from your explanation, we don't have strategic reserves, we have inventory
21:17 Again, it comes back to the question about your mandate and whether you or the company itself
21:22 My mandates are three
21:23 Are you worried that as we speak right now, there aren't strategic reserves because nobody is paying for them?
21:29 And they are all inventory?
21:31 So this question has to go to the policy maker, not to me
21:36 I'm running a business
21:38 So who is your boss who puts you there and you share with them the lesson?
21:41 We know we don't have money to buy the strategic reserves, we know that
21:45 But what we do is we make sure we have enough inventory to keep the country running
21:52 The nation needs to have a certain conversation and that conversation should lead to how we are going to finance our strategic reserves
22:02 It's a very critical information
22:04 If you ask me whether Ghana needs strategic reserves, I say yes, Ghana needs strategic reserves
22:10 If you ask me whether a for-profit company like BOST should be the one going to take a loan from the bank to keep petroleum products for the nation
22:20 I would say no, we can't do that
22:22 Because the strategic reserve, like I said, is like an insurance policy
22:26 And you and I who benefit from the insurance policy, we need to finance that reserve
22:32 How to finance it is a discussion that needs to be had by the policy holder and various stakeholders
22:40 To find an optimal way of financing those reserves
22:44 President Barin Kaur has called for the conversion of some existing fuel levies to be into strategic reserve levy
22:56 The money that is earmarked to buy strategic reserves has been zeroed out
23:03 Do you think it should be brought back?
23:05 I think we should find an optimal way of financing the strategic reserve
23:10 If the levy is not the optimal way, then we should find an optimal way of financing the strategic reserve
23:17 There are other levies that I think some of them may have met their objectives
23:27 We can find a way of converting those
23:30 To recovery levy
23:31 We can find a way of, I don't know, but I know there are some levies that would have met their objectives already
23:37 And then some of them could be converted into, or could be transferred into a strategic levy or strategic reserve fund
23:44 That finances strategic reserves
23:46 With this inventory that you have, God forbid if there is a war and everything, we cannot import products
23:55 How long would this inventory be able to last?
23:58 With gold for oil in place, I think we could go about four weeks, not six weeks
24:05 But then there are other products in other petroleum tanks in the country
24:09 These are private?
24:10 Private, yes
24:14 The Bwipo Authority has contributed to ensuring proper sanitation practices
24:18 To help curb the outbreak of communicable diseases in Chiaveme
24:22 In the Ketunoth municipality of the Foto region
24:26 The power-producing company, through its corporate social responsibility
24:30 Constructed a mechanized borehole and a modern sanitary facility for the community
24:35 This is geared towards ending opendification in the community
24:40 To help Ghana attain Sustainable Development Goal 6
24:44 Chiaveme is a farming community located along the Hoden road in the Ketunoth municipality of the Foto region
24:51 Only a few households in the community, which has a population of about 1,200, has sanitary facilities
24:58 While the only public piss latrine is no more safe for use
25:02 Some residents were compelled to use the community basic school's toilet
25:06 While the majority of them engaged in bad sanitation practices
25:10 Chiaveme also lacks access to potable water
25:14 Residents rely on water from this dam and the rains
25:18 We have very poor sanitation conditions over here
25:23 At Chiaveme, honestly we don't have a decent public toilet
25:29 The one we have was the old one, the piss latrine
25:32 Which is almost not usable
25:35 So the sanitation condition is very poor
25:38 We don't have potable drinking water
25:41 We have a dam a few miles from here
25:46 That is where we drink
25:48 Even we have a few boreholes in the community
25:52 But they are salty, so we don't normally drink them
25:55 So we drink from a dam
25:57 Using water from the dam coupled with opendification
26:00 Contributed to frequent outbreaks of communicable diseases
26:04 Even household toilets are not used
26:08 When you go around, out of ten houses you only get one household toilet
26:14 The screening we did for the vendors this year
26:18 The tariff rate has increased in these communities
26:23 Because they don't have a place of convenience
26:25 Learning of the plight of the community
26:27 The Bwipower Authority channeled 650,000 Ghana cities
26:32 Towards the construction of a modern sanitary facility
26:35 And a mechanized borehole to serve the community
26:38 The Chief Executive Officer of Bwipower Authority
26:41 Samuel Kufi Jameshi
26:43 Said his outfit aims to contribute to improve sanitation across the country
26:47 As part of its corporate social responsibility
26:50 We are also interested in ensuring sanitation in various areas of this country
26:57 And this is not the only place
27:00 But of course for Vuta region this is the first place we've come to
27:04 Bwipower is in Banda, in Savannah region
27:07 We are also in the Western region
27:10 Where all the three rivers are supposed to be managed by us
27:15 And also other parts of this country
27:17 And we hope that we continue to do more for the people
27:22 In order that their social lives will be better than before
27:27 The residents of Chiaveme lauded Bwipower Authority for the initiative
27:31 And promised to ensure proper maintenance of the facility
27:35 Fred Kwame Asare, Joy News, Chiaveme
27:39 What's the live on Joy News today
27:47 We are in our studios in Kokomlemle
27:52 And it's on the final first street
27:54 Let's take a break, when we return there's more we'll be bringing to you
27:57 Before we take the break though
27:59 There's a call for the issue of terrorism to be seen and dealt with
28:03 As a societal vice separated from religion
28:06 That's according to some Muslim clerics who say
28:09 With terrorism and violent extremism spreading across Africa at an alarming rate
28:15 Counter efforts must take into account the socioeconomic drivers
28:19 Of terrorist recruitment aside religion
28:22 Listen to international Islamic scholars Sheikh Nour Dean Lemo from Nigeria
28:27 And Sheikh Wael Ibrahim from Australia
28:30 Who want much attention to be paid to the negative impact of technology
28:35 Among other things rather than blaming a particular religion for terrorism
28:41 Society and of every religion is just how far back into the past you want to go
28:46 There's always a time where people use religion to justify
28:50 Taking power and forcing others on their own interpretation
28:54 Every religion has it and it comes and it goes
28:57 So it's actually it's unfortunately it's not new
29:00 When you don't know what a good dollar bill looks like
29:07 It's difficult to identify the fake
29:11 And sometimes what happens is a society becomes very illiterate about its own religion
29:16 That somebody who is charismatic who touches the grievances of people
29:22 Can wrap religion and package it in such a way that it looks beautiful
29:27 You know we talk of false prophets we talk of the wolf in sheep's clothing
29:31 This is part of what you know human beings are used to unfortunately
29:35 But what we find is within the Muslim community
29:39 You have those Muslims who have grievances
29:42 And what we find also about terrorism and violent extremism is
29:47 Ideology alone without grievance doesn't produce movement
29:53 What they think they are doing is a liberation theology
29:56 But what we find is innocent people being killed
29:59 In the name of a religion that is teaching peace
30:01 And our responsibility as religious leaders is to vaccinate
30:05 If I use that term the community so that they are not recruited
30:10 They don't support it and they can quickly identify it
30:13 And you know call it out for what it is
30:15 And gradually we find these dying a natural death
30:19 Until God knows how many years later when people become ignorant again
30:22 Then it comes back again unfortunately
30:25 Thank you Brian
30:26 To answer the question briefly about the Quran part
30:29 Because you have to be very clear when it comes to those issues
30:33 So yes there are verses in the Quran that talks about fighting and killing
30:37 We have to be very clear and educate the masses
30:40 Because our religion Islam is a complete way of life
30:44 And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala guided the believers on how to live in this life
30:48 In every aspect of their existence including when wars are waged
30:54 Confront us
30:55 Yes so how to behave in those wars
30:57 We have rules of how to actually come back with the enemies when they strike
31:02 But those verses are often quoted out of context
31:05 Like there is an ayah in the Quran
31:07 There is a verse in the Quran where Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
31:09 Is talking to those people in the battlefield at that time
31:12 And kill the disbelievers wherever you find them
31:14 Imagine if you take that verse now and go down the streets of Ghana
31:18 And start killing non-believers or non-Muslims
31:21 And start this but if you continue the ayah
31:23 And this by the way like a one part of a very long ayah
31:26 Very long verse
31:32 And we take a break on Joy News today we'll be back with business
31:36 Hi good afternoon welcome to the news here on Joy News today
31:54 With me Pius Kujubaka
31:56 Now Ghana has not got any strategic petroleum reserves now for crisis moments
32:00 This has been confirmed by managing director of the Borg Oil Storage and Transportation Company
32:05 Edwin Provencal to join business
32:07 But he insists there is no cause for alarm for now
32:10 He's been speaking on PM Express Business Edition with George Yaffe
32:14 We know we don't have money to buy the strategic reserves
32:19 We know that but what we do is we make sure we have enough inventory
32:24 To keep the country running
32:26 The nation needs to have a certain conversation
32:30 And that conversation should lead to how we're going to finance our strategic reserves
32:36 It's a very critical information
32:38 If you ask me whether does Ghana need strategic reserves
32:42 I say yes Ghana needs strategic reserves
32:45 If you ask me whether a for profit company like Bost
32:48 Should be the one going to take a loan from the bank
32:52 To keep petroleum products for the nation
32:54 I would say no
32:56 We can't do that because the strategic reserve like I said is like an insurance policy
33:00 And you and I who benefit from the insurance policy
33:03 We need to finance that reserve
33:07 How to finance it is a discussion that needs to be had by the policy holder
33:12 And various stakeholders to find an optimal way of financing those reserves
33:18 Is the Bost margin not enough to take care of all these operational costs of yours?
33:23 No, Bost margin is strictly for maintenance and operation of the network assets
33:29 And it's, I mean it used to be about 37
33:34 2021 it used to be 37% of our income
33:42 2022 it moved to, 2021 it used to be about 47% of our income
33:50 2022, 2021 it got to 37%
33:56 2022 as I speak to you it's about 11% of our income
34:03 It's nothing to write home about
34:06 The Institute of Economic Affairs has indicated that over reliance on monetary policy
34:12 In addressing the hikes in inflation would yield no positive results
34:16 The Institute is entreating government to address the supply side of factors driving inflation
34:21 According to Director of Research at the Institute, Dr John Kwachi
34:25 More collaboration is needed between government and the Bank of Ghana
34:28 To address the country's high inflation in the media budget scheduled for next week
34:32 He was speaking at a media interface on Ghana's IMF bill out
34:36 Organised by the Economic Governance Platform
34:39 We rely on a monetary policy framework
34:45 That essentially focuses on controlling demand
34:50 Demand pressures in the economy
34:52 But what we have come to realise is that
34:55 Our inflation is also determined
34:58 You know, to a large extent by supply and cost factors
35:03 And this, we've been talking about food
35:06 Fuel, the importance of fuel in driving our inflation
35:11 Transportation, and then of course the exchange rate
35:14 So you cannot use the Bank of Ghana policy rate alone
35:20 You know, to just manage demand
35:22 You have to address the supply factors also
35:25 And this is what we have been calling for, you know, for a long time
35:30 And we're just asking both Bank of Ghana and government
35:33 To, you know, cooperate, work together
35:36 So that they can also be addressing the supply and cost factors that drive inflation
35:43 We are happy to note that when it comes to demand pressures
35:48 The programme contains a provision for reducing
35:54 What they call monetary financing of the budget by Bank of Ghana
35:57 In fact, government and the Bank of Ghana have signed a memorandum of understanding
36:02 Now, for Bank of Ghana not to lend to government at all
36:06 You know, under the programme
36:08 So that will help to reduce the demand pressures
36:11 But we think that they should do something about the supply and cost factors as well
36:16 And that's it for Business For Now
36:22 I am Pius Kujuba-Kadarobi at 1pm with The Marketplace
36:40 Off the tone, I'd be glad to be here with sports on joy news today
36:43 Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has called on Ghanaians to be patient
36:47 With the technical team of the four-time African champions headed by Chris Hilton
36:52 In recent weeks, Hilton has been criticised by people who are closer to him
36:57 Especially manager of the Black Stars, Aminish Addo
37:00 And some members of the Executive Council
37:03 Notably Randy Abbe and George Amwako
37:06 Former Management Committee Chairman of the senior national team
37:09 They claim that the team has not improved since he took over a match this year
37:14 But Appiah reckons the technical team is deficient in terms of personnel
37:18 And wants stakeholders to be patient
37:21 Today, the football that we are all seeing is not about what we see on the pitch
37:28 The force is about the people who are on the bench
37:33 The technical staff
37:35 That's why today you will see that Chelsea Man City
37:39 They are even more than the team itself
37:42 The backroom staff
37:44 Yeah, we have people who
37:45 Italy went to the Euros
37:46 We did the Euros together
37:48 With 37 backroom staff
37:50 So you have a particular person who is focusing on Ireland
37:54 You have a particular person who is focusing on Messi
38:00 You have a particular person who is trying to look at the goalkeeper
38:05 But I don't think that we have the
38:08 So our technical team is deficient
38:10 No, I'm not saying that because I'm coming there
38:12 So I'm trying to say that at the end of the day
38:15 All this thing is money
38:17 Do we have the money to do that?
38:20 No
38:21 So we are deficient in our technical team
38:23 But there are other people who also talk about the chop and change
38:27 There hasn't been that consistency
38:29 Is that also a challenge?
38:30 No, it can be because
38:32 You see, I think we are living in a country where we don't have patience
38:36 We saw when you read Ferguson books
38:40 Yeah
38:41 When he started, I mean
38:43 It wasn't good
38:46 But they allow him to do his job
38:50 And we have to know one thing that
38:53 Any code that you bring
38:55 It comes with a different style of play
38:58 So the players will never get used to a particular play
39:03 That's why
39:05 Maybe
39:07 It looks like we are not getting
39:10 Like what we want to see
39:13 Our time
39:15 It was
39:16 One code that we
39:18 We had
39:20 Yeah, we had
39:21 And look at the way we played
39:23 I can close my eyes and I know where
39:25 Asamu Adjan is
39:26 Or Matthew Amwa is
39:27 And I will give him the ball
39:29 But today it looks as if we are not
39:31 I don't want to use the word confuse
39:34 It's too harsh
39:35 We are not getting it
39:37 So changing codes is to distract the system of the play of the team
39:44 Black Stars left back
39:48 Munta'a Kamehene
39:50 Says that GFA president
39:51 Ket Okuruku
39:52 Is the perfect man to lead the football government
39:55 But speaking on Prime Tech
39:57 He noted that Ket's decision to share football boots to players
40:00 Shows that he has a bigger plan or vision for development of football
40:05 You know, I always say that
40:09 In this world, whether you do bad
40:11 They will talk, whether you do good
40:13 Everything you do
40:14 And football is all about that
40:16 Even for us playing the football
40:19 This is how it is
40:20 People will criticise you
40:22 You understand
40:23 But it depends on you how you are going to take it
40:25 You understand me
40:26 But you don't need to pay more attention to people
40:28 Like in your life who criticise you
40:30 You understand me
40:31 Just try to pick something good out of that
40:33 So I think, you know
40:35 For him, the brain that he has
40:38 It's more than that
40:42 It's more what people are talking
40:44 You understand me
40:45 It's more what people are talking
40:46 So would you say that those of us
40:48 Or those who criticise Ket
40:51 They don't know the kind of person he is
40:54 And the knowledge and the vision he's got for God's sake
40:56 Yeah, this is what I'm saying
40:58 I can't tell maybe those who criticise him
41:00 That they don't know
41:01 You understand
41:02 Because this is what they say
41:04 You know, this is what they see
41:06 And they want to talk about that
41:08 You understand me
41:09 So if someone criticises you about something
41:12 You know, like
41:14 You don't need to tell the person you don't know
41:16 Maybe this is what they see
41:18 You understand me
41:19 So you have to work to prove them wrong
41:21 And this is what I'm saying
41:22 The brain that he has
41:24 It's more
41:26 Or he's seen like far
41:28 Beyond maybe what people are talking
41:30 You understand
41:31 That's your sponsor now
41:34 We do have more sports stories
41:35 On myjoyonline.com
41:37 Up next is Showbiz
41:38 Good afternoon, welcome to Showbiz here
41:53 I'm Joy Nusim
41:54 Now the CEO of Cruise People Limited
41:56 Daniel Van Der Poel says
41:57 He initially did not want
41:59 To get musician Black Sheriff arrested
42:01 For allegedly breaching a contract between them
42:04 Speaking to Joy Entertainment
42:06 He said that his company had booked Black Sheriff
42:09 For a Now Canceled show
42:11 Scheduled for August 19
42:13 And made a down payment of $20,000
42:17 Out of an agreed $40,000 ahead of the event
42:20 Hence, when he failed to send an agreed
42:23 10 to 15 seconds video
42:25 Advertising his participation
42:27 They used every available avenue
42:30 To reach out to him and his team
42:33 And for nearly two months
42:35 Got no response
42:37 The police would just not wake up
42:40 And arrest Black Sheriff
42:42 On a baseless or flimsy excuse from us
42:47 We submitted everything
42:49 So based on that
42:50 The police secured an arrest warrant
42:53 So it was either
42:55 When he's leaving
42:57 Or he's coming
42:58 And so
42:59 Immigration stopped him
43:01 Handed him over to the police
43:04 The police brought him to the police station
43:06 Gave him the opportunity
43:08 To
43:12 Listen to the complaint
43:13 And then the caution statements
43:15 Were read out to him
43:16 And he wrote his statement
43:17 Based on that he was granted
43:19 He was granted a bail
43:20 What's the next from here?
43:21 For us or for him?
43:23 For the case
43:24 Oh, well for the case it's simple
43:26 We have
43:30 A civil suit pending
43:33 We will submit
43:35 The details of that
43:37 To
43:39 Actually he will be served
43:41 You know
43:42 And he will look through it
43:44 And make a response
43:46 And if he wants to make
43:47 Ends meet by cutting a deal
43:50 If not, then
43:52 We want to pursue this
43:53 To this logical conclusion
43:54 Because you see
43:56 The way we were treated
43:58 Is not fair
