02:07 I'm going to fight him.
02:08 I'm going to fight him.
02:09 I'm going to fight him.
02:10 I'm going to fight him.
02:16 >> Short left uppercut nearly coming with that left hook
02:18 counter.
02:19 That's a signature punch of Valdez.
02:20 But he was just off the mark.
02:21 But you can see where the opportunity may exist.
02:24 High energy early on here at round one.
02:27 >> No slow start for Navarrete.
02:29 He's getting off to a quicker start than I've seen him in the
02:31 past.
02:32 >> Right hand to the body from Valdez.
02:35 Both men opening up.
02:37 Valdez comes back with a left hand.
02:39 Goes with that left uppercut from mid-range this time.
02:44 Good jab from Valdez.
02:45 Missed with the right hand follow.
02:47 No time to waste.
02:49 High pressure fight.
02:55 >> Oh, he hurt him with that.
02:56 >> Two punch combination.
02:57 Navarrete's got Valdez hurt.
02:59 Navarrete hurt Valdez here.
03:01 Half a minute to go in round one.
03:02 Good combination from Navarrete.
03:05 >> You see no offense coming back from Valdez when he's in
03:07 that high guard.
03:09 Navarrete.
03:11 >> Look at this for round number one.
03:13 >> High guard killer, I told you.
03:17 >> Forget feel him out.
03:19 It's get right to it and commit to the cause.
03:27 >> Kick right in.
03:31 >> Good opening round for Emmanuel Navarrete.
03:34 >> Wow.
03:50 >> [Speaking Spanish]
03:51 >> Hey, you can't fall into his trap, okay?
03:54 Just take it easy.
03:55 He's going to come to you.
03:56 You got to make him fix.
03:58 You have great conditioning.
04:01 Don't try to lunge first because he's going to catch you
04:03 with the uppercut because he's longer than you.
04:05 You got to paint.
04:08 When he throws, he's slow.
04:09 You got to counter.
04:11 This fight is going to be won by counter lunging.
04:14 You got to start the attack.
04:16 >> Valdez right here getting caught out of position.
04:18 You see him squat down right there in the right hand
04:20 from Navarrete.
04:22 Not only does he have a left hook, he has a right hand
04:24 and an uppercut as well.
04:26 But good shot.
04:27 Navarrete just lets his hands fly.
04:29 And when your opponent gets out of position,
04:31 he follows up with his offense.
04:33 He's dangerous with his assaults,
04:35 especially getting his fighters out of position.
04:37 >> If you throw enough punches, something's going to land.
04:41 Well, in that first round, Navarrete threw 73 punches
04:46 to Valdez's 33 and landed nine power punches,
04:50 including the right hand that was driven down
04:53 and the left uppercut.
05:01 >> Now you see Valdez now coming forward,
05:04 swinging wild with right hands to the body.
05:07 >> There's that left uppercut from far range again
05:10 that gets him in.
05:11 >> Forcing him out, getting out of position.
05:14 No way of punching back.
05:16 Instant punching bag.
05:18 >> He is so awkward.
05:19 He is so unpredictable.
05:20 And where that left hand comes from,
05:22 it's just out of the natural range.
05:24 It breaks the mold of what your opponent is expecting.
05:27 >> In the jab of Navarrete, that's the problem right now
05:30 with Valdez, he can't get inside.
05:32 He's trying to find a way, but Navarrete,
05:34 he kind of pushes with his jab.
05:36 He leaves it out there for a second,
05:38 lower than usual.
05:40 Most people bring their jabs back, Tess.
05:42 He doesn't.
05:43 He leaves it out there, almost as a shield.
05:46 >> Remember the six-inch reach advantage for Navarrete.
05:52 You always look at that body.
05:59 You always make the same comment.
06:00 You look at Navarrete's body,
06:01 and it always just looks a little imperfect around the belly.
06:04 This was even at 122 pounds, even at 126 pounds.
06:08 >> I'm not worried about that.
06:09 >> Exactly.
06:10 >> Height weight champion of the world.
06:11 >> He looks like a bag of milk.
06:12 >> Yeah.
06:13 [laughing]
06:15 >> There's three-punch combination from Navarrete.
06:17 Most of that was blocked by Valdez.
06:18 Remember, in terms of combination punching,
06:20 he's one of the best in the world
06:22 of throwing four or more punches in combinations.
06:25 >> Good jab right there from Valdez.
06:27 He needs to be consistent with that jab.
06:29 He needs to be technically sound,
06:30 and you heard from Eddie Reynoso,
06:32 as Bernardo Asuna was translating,
06:34 saying the counterpunch, the availability,
06:37 with all the offense that's coming your way with Navarrete,
06:39 the counterpunching will win this fight.
06:41 You have to commit to it.
06:43 >> Valdez now using his athleticism now,
06:45 using his feet, trying to create offense for himself.
06:48 He's playing defense right now.
06:50 Cat and mouse.
06:52 Play defense.
06:53 Let Navarrete get a little full steam.
06:55 Let him get some confidence.
06:56 And then he's going to be looking to counter him with shots.
07:00 >> Back against the ropes,
07:08 but Valdez unable to pull the trigger
07:10 with a right-hand follow.
07:13 >> Good adjustment right there.
07:15 >> There's a right hand to the body on the inside.
07:16 Valdez trying to get that real estate on the inside.
07:19 The warning behind the head.
07:20 Navarrete fires back with the right hand.
07:22 Tries to go with the left uppercut.
07:23 Pulling back was Valdez.
07:25 Out of range.
07:26 Good exchange.
07:27 Gets the crowd attention here at the end of round number two.
07:30 Right hand, one-two from Navarrete.
07:32 Tries to push him back with a jab.
07:34 We got a good one.
07:35 Oh, good left hand from Valdez.
07:37 And Navarrete fires back with an uppercut.
07:41 So far, it's living up to
07:43 and exceeding expectations early on.
07:47 >> You're doing okay.
07:53 You got to take the initiative, okay?
07:55 You got to work that left.
07:58 You got to feint.
07:59 Now he felt your power.
08:01 Take a deep breath.
08:03 [speaking Spanish]
08:06 That's how I want to see you, calm.
08:11 And I want you to use your fingers.
08:14 Don't let him take the initiative.
08:19 [speaking Spanish]
08:21 >> Did he hit hard?
08:22 >> Nah.
08:23 >> This left hook at the end of this round
08:24 was something to see right here.
08:26 Beautiful shot.
08:27 He didn't turn that shot over.
08:29 If he would have turned that shot over,
08:31 I'm telling you right now,
08:32 Navarrete probably would have been down,
08:34 still down right now.
08:35 You see it's a slapping shot from Oscar Valdez.
08:38 He needs to turn that punch over
08:40 if he wants it to be effective.
08:42 [bell dings]
08:44 >> Round number three.
08:45 As we begin this round,
08:47 Navarrete has a 25 to 18 connect advantage.
08:50 Came off the pace just a little bit
08:51 and punches thrown in round number two.
08:53 Valdez was 8 of 41 in that last round.
08:56 >> The punch that Navarrete's looking for,
09:01 he's looking for the uppercut.
09:02 That's the shot he's looking for,
09:03 the left uppercut on Valdez.
09:06 >> So happy that we are bringing you this main event
09:08 completely commercial free.
09:10 And with that access to the corner,
09:12 Bernardo Asuna, I swear I heard them ask,
09:15 "Does he hit hard?"
09:16 And the response was, "Nah."
09:18 >> That's exactly what was asked of Emanuel Navarrete
09:22 and his cousin Pedro, and that was his answer,
09:24 dismissing the power of Oscar Valdez.
09:27 But it's early, and we know that
09:29 the bravado of Navarrete may be just that.
09:32 >> Well, ask Miguel Burchelt, who is the boogie man,
09:34 the undefeated fighter, if Oscar Valdez hits hard,
09:37 because he had one of the knockouts of the year.
09:40 >> Valdez being very crafty right now.
09:44 Navarrete, yes, he's throwing, he's landing occasionally,
09:46 but Valdez is being sneaky.
09:49 >> Short right hand on the inside,
09:50 and then a short left uppercut.
09:52 And now he lunges at Valdez.
09:54 It's so awkward and so unpredictable
09:56 because you don't expect them from this space.
09:58 There's another driving overhand right hand.
10:00 >> And now they tie up on the inside,
10:02 separated by West Belt.
10:03 >> That's what he's great at, off-rhythm punches.
10:05 You don't see that.
10:06 It's hard to train for this type of work from Navarrete.
10:09 >> How would you ever find a sparring opponent
10:11 that could replicate Emanuel Navarrete?
10:13 >> You can't. You can't.
10:15 >> He misses with the right hand,
10:18 and he's got an awkward right hand coming back at him.
10:20 Short, chopping left hook from Valdez.
10:22 Right hand right back in his face from Navarrete.
10:25 >> Just seems to me that Valdez is just looking
10:30 for one punch in the left hook.
10:32 He needs to put a little bit more to his arsenal.
10:34 Navarrete has figured that out already.
10:36 He's smarter than a lot of people give him credit for.
10:38 He's a lot smarter.
10:40 >> He's looking for that left uppercut,
10:44 and then he changes his mind in stride.
10:46 >> And then he changes his mind. Yep.
10:47 >> Now he doesn't land it,
10:48 but we've seen him in the past
10:50 actually brutalize opponents with that move.
10:52 There he ducks underneath with the left hand
10:54 to the body in the middle of the exchange.
10:55 >> And how he did that was he threw the uppercut
10:57 to bring the elbows inside,
10:59 so that way he can reach around
11:01 to get that left hook there.
11:03 >> There's the left uppercut again.
11:05 Time and again will lead with that.
11:08 Valdez, that high guard that you detail, Timmy.
11:11 >> Yeah, there's some holes in the high guard.
11:14 You can come around it and go down to the body.
11:16 You can also split it and punch through it like that.
11:18 >> What's very interesting, though,
11:20 in recent years, as Valdez has become
11:22 a more refined boxer, puncher,
11:24 and with more defensive prowess
11:25 under the tutelage of Eddie Reynoso,
11:27 the trainer also of Canelo Alvarez,
11:29 he is top ten according to CompuBox
11:31 in defensive efficiency.
11:33 Now tonight, he's being hit.
11:35 Navarrete, 35 punches landed,
11:37 23 of them already power punches.
11:40 >> Oh! Nice right hand by Valdez.
11:44 Good stuff! Good, good stuff!
11:47 [crowd cheering]
11:50 >> Rinse your mouth.
11:59 >> [speaking Spanish]
12:01 >> You have to get into a rhythm, not his pace.
12:04 You're defending well, but you need to duck
12:06 and get out of the way.
12:08 >> [speaking Spanish]
12:10 >> He's gonna start getting tired.
12:12 >> [speaking Spanish]
12:14 >> He comes in too heavy.
12:16 >> [speaking Spanish]
12:18 >> Try to just land that left hook one at a time.
12:21 It's gonna happen for you.
12:23 Just watch out for that long right.
12:25 >> Here's Navarrete on the inside.
12:27 Beautiful, nice little short shot, but wow!
12:29 Look how he changed angles right there.
12:31 Still had the ability to be able to land
12:33 and see this shot on the inside.
12:35 [whistle blows]
12:36 Short right hand, there he is, steps back,
12:38 switches stances, and shoots from the southpaw stance.
12:42 Double uppercut from Navarrete.
12:45 One, two.
12:48 [bell dings]
12:49 >> We heard the corner of Oscar Valdez.
12:52 As Reynoso said, "Navarrete will tire.
12:55 You just have to calm down.
12:57 It will happen for you."
12:59 Let's check in with Mark Creagle
13:01 and his scorecard to this point.
13:03 >> Three rounds to none.
13:05 Emmanuel Navarrete.
13:07 Tim mentioned distance at the start of this fight.
13:10 Navarrete, with that long jab that he keeps out there,
13:13 has been controlling the distance the whole way through,
13:16 and he's also landed those right hands
13:18 from some crazy angles.
13:20 Last thing I know, he took his great left hook, Timmy.
13:23 >> He took his great left hook,
13:25 but he's also made an adjustment himself, Navarrete.
13:27 What he's doing is, look at his right hand.
13:29 It's pinned to the side of his face
13:31 every time he throws a punch.
13:33 >> There's an off-balance left hand again from Navarrete.
13:36 Wide, sweeping right hand.
13:38 Countering opportunities do exist,
13:40 and there's a short right hand on the inside from Valdez.
13:43 >> Partially blocked by Navarrete.
13:44 He's aware of the left hook of Valdez.
13:47 >> There it is again. That time he got just underneath.
13:49 Remember, it was a left hook that floored Emmanuel Navarrete
13:53 in his last fight in this arena, in this very ring,
13:56 when he benefited from a long count.
13:59 There's a right uppercut now.
14:01 He spit out his mouthpiece against Liam Wilson,
14:03 and for 27 seconds, he was allowed to recover
14:06 in a veteran move that claimed a title
14:09 when he rallied back to win by TKO.
14:12 >> Aska Valdez is looking to close the distance on Navarrete.
14:17 He's not even having a whole lot of success on the outside.
14:20 It looks like he's trying to find a way to get on the inside,
14:23 and he wants to work the body of Navarrete.
14:27 There he is, using his physical strength now.
14:30 >> Holding up with that left hand,
14:32 coming around with that right hand was Valdez.
14:34 Merely missed with that left hook.
14:36 That may be available to him.
14:38 >> We call that a frame. That's what it was.
14:40 He was able to use that right hand,
14:42 and he was able to use that left hand
14:44 to be able to land the opposite.
14:46 >> Valdez, that high guard,
14:52 just trying to time that left hook again.
14:55 You heard from Hernandez, the countering, the timing,
14:57 it'll be there for you. It will be there.
15:00 >> And he was trying to counter it off the uppercut,
15:02 so you know that's been a part of the game plan.
15:04 When you see the uppercut, throw the left hook.
15:06 >> What about this?
15:08 >> And a counterattack from Navarrete.
15:11 There it is again, that time a little fat with the right hand,
15:14 but he was able to back up Valdez,
15:16 who wasn't in position to return fire.
15:18 >> But the variation, that's what's confusing Valdez.
15:20 They're coming from everywhere, different angles,
15:22 and the shots are heavy, Tess.
15:24 These are not, you know, feather dusters.
15:26 These are real hard shots coming from Navarrete.
15:29 >> You can see redness in the face of Valdez.
15:31 Of course, 31 knockouts among his 37 wins for Navarrete.
15:35 >> Fuck.
15:38 >> I want you to pay attention to flow.
15:40 You see Navarrete, he's real loose with his offense.
15:42 Relax. Everything that Valdez throw, it's hard.
15:45 You can see it coming. It's loaded.
15:47 He loads up on his shots.
15:49 >> As he did there with the left hand
15:51 against the wiry, unpredictable Navarrete.
15:54 End of four.
15:56 >> Pero, no hay prisa, no hay prisa.
16:03 >> Hey, don't rush it.
16:05 >> Navarrete, take your time.
16:07 >> Ya lo tienes donde lo quieres.
16:09 >> You have him where you want him.
16:11 >> Seguir trabajando y remátalo abajo.
16:13 >> And then I want you to go downstairs.
16:15 Finish the down to the body.
16:17 >> Dale agua. >> Give him some water.
16:25 >> Agua.
16:28 >> Me gusta, me gusta. >> I like what you're doing.
16:33 >> Pinche toquecito al hígado.
16:35 >> That's all that's missing, all right?
16:37 >> Tapos, salidas. >> All right, man.
16:39 You got to close his exits.
16:41 Let's go.
16:43 >> Take it down now. Take it down. Let's go.
16:45 >> World champion, Emmanuel Navarrete.
16:54 Three-division world champion.
16:56 Look at the defense here against Oscar Valdez.
16:58 All Mexican clash to determine warriors.
17:02 Round number four.
17:04 >> Navarrete with a 53-37 connect advantage.
17:07 In that last round, he threw a fight high 81.
17:11 And we told you about the four-punch combinations.
17:14 In that last round, he had three combinations
17:17 that were four or more punches.
17:19 He is one of the best in the world at putting his punches together.
17:22 >> Stop. Stop. Back up.
17:24 >> I like the adjustment that Valdez is doing now.
17:26 Now he's committing fully to the body now.
17:28 That's what he wants to do. He's trying to weaken Navarrete.
17:32 Another right hand down to the body.
17:35 Good job from right there from Oscar Valdez.
17:48 Just staying low, letting those punches fly over his head.
17:52 >> Getting out of range from that attack as well.
17:55 Utilizing his footwork and now a little upper body movement.
17:58 >> And then setting up a counter left hook for himself.
18:00 >> Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
18:03 Keep it clear. Keep it clear.
18:05 Look.
18:07 >> See, you don't always have to match volume with volume.
18:12 You can outmaneuver volume.
18:14 That's what you're seeing right now Valdez do.
18:17 Using some tactics. He's getting caught right there in that high guard.
18:20 >> There's the volume punching.
18:23 Something's gonna come through.
18:25 >> Something's gonna get in, Tess.
18:27 >> Good head work and the loose-- and the looseness right there from Valdez.
18:31 And here's his follow-up attack.
18:33 >> Just missed with the right hand. Left uppercut comes back into the face.
18:36 Comes with a right uppercut. Creates more space.
18:38 One-two from Navarrete.
18:40 Oh! Good shot from Valdez!
18:44 He sat on it and released it.
18:47 Tries to come back with it in a short right hand.
18:50 So here's a swing moment for Oscar Valdez
18:53 who's being a little more judicious and finding his spots.
18:58 >> It's hard to break Valdez's psyche.
19:03 He hasn't been having a good couple of rounds
19:05 and now he's still fighting back
19:07 and trying to find a way to get himself into this fight.
19:11 >> Whoa! >> Opens up with that left hook.
19:16 >> Just partially blocked.
19:18 >> His signature punch. Each man does it with the left hand.
19:21 One, the out-of-range lunging uppercut.
19:24 The other, a tight, fundamentally sound left hook.
19:27 There's a four-five-six punch combination from Navarrete.
19:31 Comes right back at Valdez.
19:34 Highly competitive fifth round here.
19:37 >> Neither guy wants to give an inch.
19:39 A psychological edge at all, Tess.
19:41 >> Navarrete trying to double up to the body.
19:44 >> Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop.
19:46 >> Don't make him have the head, okay?
19:48 >> Oh! Another left hook.
19:50 >> Another left hook from Valdez.
19:53 Able to get around that probing shot.
19:56 So a much better round for Oscar Valdez,
19:59 even with Navarrete hitting double-digit connects
20:02 and combination punching well again.
20:05 >> [ Speaking Spanish ]
20:08 >> How do you feel, Oscar? >> Okay.
20:10 [ Speaking Spanish ]
20:12 >> You caught him with some good shots.
20:14 You got to use your legs, as we see a cut now under Oscar's eye.
20:20 [ Speaking Spanish ]
20:22 >> You got to keep using your legs.
20:25 >> [ Speaking Spanish ]
20:27 >> You got to come out thick with your legs.
20:30 And you got to use your head movement.
20:33 >> Last round was one of the best rounds for Oscar Valdez.
20:36 Just finding a home for his left hook.
20:38 Finally getting in position, catching Navarrete out of position.
20:43 There it is again.
20:44 Nice right hand over the top as well.
20:46 >> Seconds out. Seconds out.
20:48 >> Saw the concern from Eddie Reynoso and the cut man, Carlos Barragán Jr.,
20:52 as there is now an abrasion that has opened up to a slight cut
20:55 with swelling under that right eye of Oscar Valdez.
20:59 That right eye that has been the target of that left uppercut.
21:04 As we start round number six, let's check in with the card of Mark Kregel.
21:09 >> Four rounds to one, Emanuel Navarrete.
21:14 I thought Oscar came on strong in the fourth.
21:17 I wouldn't have a problem if he gave that either way.
21:20 But the fifth was definitely his.
21:22 With precision, I thought he defended himself much better.
21:25 >> He was 11 of 23 for power punches in that fifth round.
21:30 But you can see that abrasion and swelling under the right eye of Oscar Valdez.
21:36 He did find a little bit of offense that was very effective in round number five, Jimmy.
21:41 >> See that? That isn't right now in full effect from Oscar Valdez.
21:45 And you see the technique faltering for, again, Navarrete.
21:49 And as this fight continues and goes on and he starts to get fatigued,
21:53 those openings are going to become more and more available
21:57 for Oscar Valdez, who has the better technique.
22:00 >> There's that left hook again. He hurt him with that.
22:06 >> And he goes back with it. Tried to follow it up with the right hand.
22:08 Wide swinging overhand right, but instead, Navarrete is able to get out of range
22:12 and get to the ropes and force a break.
22:14 >> So more success for Valdez.
22:16 There's the left uppercut from Navarrete.
22:21 >> Good shot from Navarrete. He continues to land that shot.
22:24 >> It is a constant beat of the drum, that left uppercut.
22:28 His trademark punch.
22:30 >> You see him by the throat. Looked like he was going to throw a left hook,
22:33 and then he snuck it underneath.
22:43 >> Beautiful shot right there.
22:45 >> See, it's not about--
22:46 >> That pronounced swelling and discoloration with the abrasion
22:48 under the right eye of Valdez.
22:50 >> It's not about matching volume tests for Valdez.
22:53 It's about accuracy. It's about being precise.
22:56 That's what it's about.
22:58 He can let Navarrete work, but he needs to choose his spots wisely
23:04 when he lets his hands go, and that's what he's doing right now.
23:07 >> You can't hit him back there, okay? Okay?
23:09 >> Warning from West Melton.
23:12 >> He's being clever. That's what he's being. Sneaky. Clever.
23:16 Good shot to the body.
23:18 >> That left hook to the body has been effective throughout the career of Oscar Valdez.
23:22 Now inching forward just a little more as Valdez--
23:26 There's a right hand to that wide flank.
23:29 Left hook again from Valdez.
23:31 >> Finding more of a rhythm.
23:33 >> And now an up jab.
23:39 >> Nearly an elbow on the inside from Navarrete.
23:42 >> This is good stuff right here.
23:46 >> Oh, it's excellent. Excellent. High-level fight.
23:48 >> What an adjustment from Oscar Valdez.
23:50 >> He who adjusts will put themselves in position to win.
23:54 Valdez more technically sound.
23:57 >> I'd say it's starting to get really good,
24:05 but it's been like that since the opening bell.
24:07 Such an intriguing matchup.
24:10 >> Give him some water.
24:14 Take a deep breath. Come on.
24:17 Are you recovered? Are you in?
24:20 Something happened. I don't know what happened.
24:26 >> You're moving backwards very well.
24:31 Keep making a miss, and then just land a right hand.
24:35 >> Keep making a miss, and then just land that hook.
24:38 >> Okay.
24:40 >> It's been a ton of action this entire fight from the opening bell.
24:48 Both guys having their moments.
24:50 It started off with Navarrete piling up points, hard shots,
24:53 landing shots in between the guard of Oscar Valdez,
24:56 but lately, of the last two rounds,
24:58 Oscar Valdez has been coming on strong.
25:00 He will not be detoured mentally.
25:03 He's back into this fight right now.
25:05 He is more precise with his shots,
25:07 more accurate with his punches at the moment,
25:09 and Navarrete has yet to answer.
25:11 >> Boy, those total punches just sum up who these guys are, right?
25:14 You got one guy that's landing 28% in Valdez, more precise,
25:19 but he's only thrown 202.
25:21 Meanwhile, Navarrete's thrown 463 punches through six rounds.
25:26 He has landed 54 power punches.
25:32 >> I just spoke with Pedro Navarrete, who trains Emmanuel,
25:35 and I asked him, "What did he tell you?"
25:37 And he kind of giggled at me and said
25:39 that his hands hurt him from hitting Valdez so hard.
25:41 >> Yeah, I mean, that's typical Navarrete, right?
25:44 >> Well, he needs to find a softer surface
25:49 and needs to go down to that body and stop hitting him on the head.
25:54 [crowd shouting]
25:57 >> See, there's nothing more frustrating, Tess,
26:07 than throwing punches, hoping they land, and they don't land.
26:10 The opponent making you miss.
26:12 It tires you out, Tess.
26:14 >> Don't lean on him, okay?
26:16 >> Mouthpiece out. Mouthpiece. Mouthpiece is out.
26:19 >> One more timeout, timeout!
26:21 >> And the referee didn't see it.
26:23 He had the moment, the action, the break.
26:25 Could have pointed it out.
26:27 And Valdez returns to the corner.
26:31 I bet he knows how to take care of that.
26:35 [crowd shouting]
26:39 [crowd shouting]
26:42 >> We're covering. Stop! Stop! Stop! Break clean.
26:56 >> You see the offensive blow from Navarrete.
26:58 Something is not right. There's something that's not right.
27:00 It's either what Valdez is doing or he might be hurt.
27:06 I don't know.
27:07 >> And then all of a sudden, he switches the gear
27:09 and throws that combination.
27:11 But to your point, he threw 95 punches in round number 5.
27:15 Right now, with a minute to go in round number 7, he's thrown 33.
27:18 >> Or this could just be typical Navarrete.
27:23 Managing his energy.
27:25 >> Valdez trying to dig for the body once he retreated.
27:28 >> Back up. Back up. Back up.
27:30 >> Remember, there was a change in the camp of Navarrete
27:33 because he was talking about wanting to have
27:35 the gas tank filled towards the end to strengthen condition.
27:39 Over the top of the right hand is Valdez.
27:41 Misses with the left hook as Navarrete pulled back.
27:43 >> Stop. Stop. Stop. Back up.
27:45 [crowd shouting]
28:04 >> Work out of there. Work out of there.
28:06 Work out of there.
28:08 >> Now he worked out of there.
28:11 >> Multi-punch combination again from Navarrete.
28:14 Pulls out with a left hook.
28:16 Valdez tries to burrow his way to the inside.
28:18 Unable to fire anything. Left hook off the mark.
28:21 Right hand comes back from Navarrete with a left uppercut as well.
28:24 And they fight through the bell.
28:27 Seven rounds in the books in this all-Mexican rivalry
28:32 and a new G for the world title.
28:35 [crowd shouting]
28:38 [speaking Spanish]
28:40 >> Hey, the 8th round is coming.
28:42 [speaking Spanish]
28:44 >> Don't get over-anxious.
28:46 Just keep working.
28:49 [speaking Spanish]
28:51 >> I need you to move, work, and explode.
28:55 [speaking Spanish]
28:57 >> Because of that.
28:59 [speaking Spanish]
29:02 >> Navarrete right here taking advantage of the lows
29:04 of the offense coming from Navarrete--
29:07 oh, excuse me, from Valdez.
29:09 You see the combinations right here falling up.
29:11 You see the position he's in. He's out of position.
29:13 Can't really shoot any shots, and he finally stands up
29:16 and throws a left hook.
29:18 >> Tim, you mentioned the gear shifts of Navarrete.
29:21 >> Yes.
29:22 >> How there's ebbs and flows.
29:24 How he can turn it on, he can turn it off,
29:26 and then all of a sudden here comes the tsunami wave of punches.
29:31 >> He's a faucet.
29:31 >> With about a minute to go in that 7th round,
29:33 we made the point of saying he's only thrown 33 punches
29:35 at this point.
29:36 He finished that round with a fight-high 99 punches thrown
29:40 and 21 landed.
29:42 >> That's Navarrete.
29:43 >> He was just coasting along.
29:45 And yet he finished with fight-high 21 of 99
29:49 in that 7th round.
29:50 >> Well, Tess, he can turn it on when he wants to.
29:51 He can turn it on when he wants to fight.
29:53 He can just turn it up.
29:55 That's an unbelievable, unbelievable ability.
29:59 >> There's a body shot from Oscar Valdez.
30:01 Left hook from Valdez.
30:06 >> See, Navarrete is about volume.
30:10 You have Valdez, he's about sharp counters.
30:15 Boom, right there.
30:16 >> Oh, there's that right hand as Navarrete threw that punch
30:19 and was off balance.
30:20 >> We call that clean, effective punches.
30:27 >> Which is a scoring criteria.
30:28 >> The most important of the scoring criteria.
30:31 Clean and effective punching.
30:33 That's what the game is about.
30:35 Tried to chop down with that right hand.
30:43 Just a grazing shot from Valdez.
30:45 Been trying to hit that home run with the left hook a few times.
30:49 >> Ooh, nice shot right there.
30:51 Nice setup.
30:53 Double uppercut, didn't reach around the elbow
30:56 to get the left hook to the liver by Navarrete.
31:00 Good defense right there by Navarrete.
31:09 >> That's a good defense.
31:11 >> That's a good defense.
31:13 >> That's a good defense.
31:15 >> That's a good defense.
31:17 >> Nice defense right there by Navarrete.
31:20 Showing a little bit of his athleticism.
31:24 Oh, there it is.
31:30 You reach, I teach.
31:32 Good shot coming back from Navarrete.
31:36 I mean, this is it going back and forth.
31:38 Neither guy looking to give anyone an edge in this fight.
31:41 And it's more about the mental.
31:43 That's what it's more about.
31:44 When you get hit with big shots, you try to get it back
31:47 as quickly as you can.
31:49 Just to let the guy know, hey, I'm here too, baby.
31:53 >> Valdez closing in on him.
31:55 Had him smothered for a moment.
31:57 Now back out at range here.
31:59 Final half minute of round number eight.
32:02 >> You see it turned into a tactical fight for Valdez.
32:11 >> Good shot.
32:13 >> Able to score there.
32:15 >> Tactical and slower pace in favor of Oscar Valdez.
32:19 >> Absolutely.
32:20 Control and the pace was a key element to this fight.
32:24 >> Crowd starting to chant here as we come to the end of eight
32:30 and head towards those championship rounds.
32:32 Keep in mind, the backstretch of big fights.
32:35 That is where Navarrete does his thing.
32:38 Remember what he did to Isaac Dogbe.
32:41 It was the brutal beatdown in the rematch.
32:44 That's who he took the title from.
32:46 Santissima he got in the 11th round back in 2020.
32:50 Perhaps his finest performance was against Petupo Diaz
32:54 down in Orlando in 2021.
32:56 And then most recently, right here in this ring
32:59 to win this title against a very game Liam Wilson,
33:03 he dismissed him in nine.
33:06 >> And you look at the punch numbers of what he's put forth.
33:09 His work rate goes up when we get to round nine through 12.
33:14 That is the point we have arrived at.
33:16 The late knockouts for Navarrete.
33:18 >> The difference is those guys gave in.
33:22 They conceded, Tess, and he felt it.
33:25 The difference here is Valdez, he's not gonna concede.
33:29 He's gonna be here all night long.
33:32 >> He never does.
33:33 >> Exactly.
33:34 >> You are talking about a fighter who fought seven and a half rounds
33:37 in a championship effort and won with a broken jaw.
33:41 >> You gotta beat the fight out of Valdez.
33:43 You gotta knock him out to stop him.
33:45 >> So here we are, round number nine.
33:47 Navarrete with a 116 to 82 connect advantage,
33:50 according to CompuBox.
33:51 Valdez more precision.
33:53 He's landed 30% of his total punches.
33:55 Navarrete landing 18%.
33:57 Let's check in with Bernardo.
33:58 >> I just spoke with Eddie Reynoso and I said,
34:00 "What did you ask him to come out and do?
34:02 He's got to pressure. He's got to dig to the body."
34:04 He does that.
34:06 >> And he does.
34:07 And it's a moment for Valdez.
34:09 There's an overhand right as Navarrete fires back with an up jab.
34:12 And back to the center of the ring.
34:15 Good action to open up round number nine.
34:18 >> But he's missing, Tess. He's missing.
34:20 >> Head movement from Valdez.
34:22 We told you the improvement of the defensive prowess in the recent years.
34:25 He's gonna need that down the stretch.
34:27 You know what Navarrete intends to bring.
34:29 Still searching for that left hook.
34:31 >> He hurt his hand.
34:32 It's the right hand that's hurt for Navarrete.
34:35 He just shook his hand.
34:36 >> Look at this.
34:37 He's only thrown the left for the past couple moments.
34:39 Now pawing with the right.
34:40 Let's see if he throws.
34:41 He tried to fix the glove with the right hand.
34:43 Let's see if he throws a full right hand.
34:45 Bernardo will be in that corner.
34:47 >> Oh, he got hurt with that body shot.
34:49 >> Left hand sweeping across the body.
34:51 Comes up high.
34:52 But we have yet to see Navarrete through that right hand, Timmy.
34:56 >> It's hurt.
34:57 But he has to fight, Tess.
34:59 Doesn't matter. He's been here before.
35:01 He's hurt his hands in previous fights.
35:03 And he still found a way to win.
35:05 And he says he wants to go to that dark place.
35:07 Well, he's gonna have to go there tonight to beat Oscar Valdez.
35:11 Because he is coming on strong on the back end of this fight.
35:15 >> Pawing with the jab.
35:17 Valdez seemingly sensing it.
35:20 Still that continued swelling and the abrasion under the right eye.
35:24 Navarrete only throwing out that stay-away jab for right now.
35:29 >> Right now, Valdez is doing what everybody think he should do.
35:36 He's pushing back.
35:37 Navarrete, that's what he's doing.
35:39 He's pushing him back.
35:40 And I knew he'll have opportunities to push him back
35:42 because Navarrete's footwork is terrible.
35:45 Terrible footwork. Poor footwork.
35:47 >> So clearly, something wrong with the right hand of Navarrete.
35:59 Bernardo.
36:00 >> Yeah, just to close out the point before the action started,
36:03 Eddie told me, "Look, if we're losing this fight,
36:06 I need Valdez to go out there and dig to the body
36:08 because since the third round, he's missing the shots to the head."
36:12 >> It'll be interesting to see how the judges scored things early on.
36:15 How many of these rounds were banked by Navarrete
36:18 as he clearly had the advantage in the early going.
36:20 But right now, a turn of this championship fight
36:23 in favor of Oscar Valdez.
36:25 Both with what he produced in this ninth round
36:27 and now the circumstances with Navarrete.
36:37 >> So limited with that right hand is Navarrete.
36:41 Let's listen and hear what they say.
36:44 >> Hey, he's just waiting for you to press and then you're gonna counter him.
36:55 >> I know, we're working too hard on him.
36:57 >> Hey, don't take a step back.
36:59 >> I know my hand hurts.
37:01 >> Hey, we're never gonna get this opportunity again.
37:06 >> Hey, how do you see the fight?
37:08 >> You get--
37:09 >> Tim, let's show people the Valdez punch from that last round
37:13 and watch the feet as you see this replay.
37:16 Watch the feet.
37:18 >> Squared up.
37:20 >> Right there. >> Yep.
37:21 Stepped on him. Stepped on his foot right there.
37:24 Tripped him up.
37:25 >> So the reaction that everybody ooed and aahed over--
37:29 >> It wasn't-- >> Partially caused by--
37:31 >> Yeah. >> Caused by what happened there
37:33 with the feet.
37:35 >> So here we go. We've got high drama now
37:37 considering the right hand of Navarrete.
37:40 The momentum swing for Valdez
37:42 as we are starting the 10th round.
37:45 WBO Junior Lightweight World Championship on the line.
37:48 Mexican legacy warrior pride on the line
37:52 in front of some of the greatest to ever do it sitting ringside.
37:56 >> So there's-- >> Has Navarrete used that right hand?
38:00 >> So there's a risk for Valdez going down to the body.
38:04 If he doesn't do it at the right distance,
38:07 that uppercut could get in on him.
38:09 >> Navarrete willing to throw combinations here
38:14 to open up round 10,
38:15 but not fully throttling that right hand.
38:18 >> No, he just wants to fluster and bewilder Valdez.
38:21 That's it. He wants to keep him occupied,
38:23 keep his hands in his pocket.
38:25 So he's just letting punches go,
38:27 whether they land or not.
38:29 Nothing's coming back from Valdez at this moment.
38:31 >> And strangely, that's his best defense.
38:33 >> Yes.
38:35 But just look, if he doesn't pay attention,
38:37 if he doesn't be disciplined with that right hand,
38:40 that left hook is gonna come real soon.
38:42 >> Opening moments of this 10th round is a Navarrete round
38:45 as the white eye is worsening for Valdez.
38:48 Back and forth, these swings of drama.
38:51 >> Valdez is looking, he's looking to just warm up for that shot.
38:55 He's looking-- >> There it is!
38:57 Right hand over the top.
38:58 That white eye is significantly worse.
39:01 >> There it is again.
39:02 >> Navarrete willing to exchange with that right hand.
39:04 Gonna have to.
39:05 Has to bite down here as we head to the championship rounds.
39:08 Tries to duck underneath with a body shot with the left.
39:11 Bernardo.
39:13 >> So Pedro Navarrete confirmed that it is the right hand that is injured.
39:16 It's the knuckles for Navarrete, but he also said,
39:18 "Keep an eye on that right eye of Valdez,
39:21 because he won't see the left coming."
39:23 >> That's a very good point.
39:24 We've been noticing it here in this 10th round.
39:26 Much more significant swelling to that right eye of Valdez,
39:30 who presses to the inside, sweeps across the body.
39:33 Goes to the body, five punch combination, six punch combination,
39:36 left hand included up top.
39:38 Navarrete gets himself out of that corner.
39:41 Minutes ago here in round number 10.
39:43 Valdez trying to come up and over with that left hook.
39:47 Back out to range.
39:49 One-two from Navarrete, doubles up the left hand.
39:53 That's his sole healthy weapon.
39:56 Look at the right eye of Valdez.
39:58 It is badly damaged here.
40:00 [crowd cheering]
40:06 Over the top with the right hand.
40:07 Looking to counter that left.
40:09 That right eye is closing, Timmy.
40:11 >> It's closing.
40:12 It's closing.
40:13 And in between rounds, we've been in Navarrete's corner,
40:15 but I was hoping we can go over there in Valdez's corner.
40:18 Is the inswell, are they using the inswell on that eye?
40:22 >> Look at this exchange.
40:24 We got one guy with an injured right hand.
40:27 We got another guy with a closed eye.
40:29 And yet we got a Mexican War breaking out.
40:33 Oh, this is great stuff.
40:35 [crowd cheering]
40:37 Come on, now.
40:38 >> Come on, baby.
40:39 Give it to him.
40:40 >> Everything it's all about.
40:42 [bell dings]
40:44 Everything it's supposed to be
40:47 and still championship rounds to go.
40:50 [crowd cheering]

45:25 >> This is what you wanted. You gotta prove yourself.
45:29 Don't leave anything in the tank.
45:32 This is all about pressuring him. He's got nothing for you.
45:39 Hey, you already took everything he had. Now give it to him. Give it back to him.
45:44 >> "Don't leave anything in the tank" was just spoken to a guy that has thrown 937 punches.
45:50 "Show your guts" was spoken to a guy who has shown them each and every time.
45:56 Let's decide it right here.
45:58 Coming off a big Navarrete round with a championship on the line.
46:02 12th and final round.
46:04 >> Test that right eye. It's closed.
46:06 >> Oh, it's closed. It's closed.
46:07 >> It was badly damaged.
46:09 >> Doctor didn't even come up at all to check that eye.
46:13 >> Punches landed. 182 to 127 edge for Navarrete.
46:20 Oh, good shot.
46:22 Both men landing there.
46:24 It was a right hand for Navarrete and return fire right hand for Valdez.
46:28 The right side of the face of Valdez shows you so much of what may reveal itself on the scorecard.
46:35 Middle rounds and towards later rounds Valdez had some big, big moments.
46:38 Early rounds were Navarrete.
46:40 And later rounds could be a Navarrete finish.
46:43 And keep in mind, with a damaged right hand, that was a push and a slip.
46:49 And having to pick himself off the canvas late in this fight,
46:52 brutal fight, fought at a high pace, takes a lot out of you.
46:56 >> The onslaught from Navarrete as he always does.
47:04 He just brings more and more and more.
47:08 Right hand from Valdez tried to sneak in.
47:11 Navarrete seemingly unaffected, slipped on the signage.
47:14 The wet signage in the middle.
47:16 Of the ring.
47:19 Oh, my goodness.
47:21 This crowd cannot get enough.
47:24 Over 10,000 selling out the configuration here.
47:28 Everybody came early wanting to get in to see the Mexican clash.
47:33 The Mexican legends ringside.
47:35 Julio Cesar Chavez, Barrera, Morales.
47:39 And it's fitting to perform like this in front of those eyes.
47:44 [crowd cheering]
47:47 >> Here come Valdez.
47:49 >> Better have urgency here.
47:51 [crowd cheering]
47:54 Wide sweeping right hand, four punch combination from Navarrete.
47:58 One more left hand sends Valdez back.
48:01 And now on the attack.
48:03 Head shots from Navarrete.
48:05 [crowd cheering]
48:09 Each round, the Mexican champion is the winner.
48:13 Each man said they wanted this kind of a fight.
48:17 The kind of fight that takes you to the dark places.
48:21 The kind of fight Navarrete said all the great Mexican legends have.
48:27 [crowd cheering]
48:31 There's the traditional left uppercut that he puts forth again.
48:35 And that right eye is in bad, bad shape.
48:39 Left hand from Valdez.
48:41 Final ticks of the clock.
48:45 Right hand combination from Valdez.
48:48 Gotta find something here.
48:50 He's going for it.
48:52 Navarrete fires back.
48:54 How about it?
48:56 [crowd cheering]
48:58 Standing ovation for these two great champions.
49:03 [crowd cheering]
49:06 [crowd cheering]
49:13 Timmy, before we even think about the scorecards,
49:17 I'm gonna put it out there right now.
49:20 All week long, Barrera and Morales were part of this promotion.
49:25 We're celebrating these two fighters.
49:29 That feels like fight one of a trilogy to me.
49:33 Absolutely.
49:34 That feels like fight one of what will be
49:37 this generation's great all-Mexican trilogy.
49:41 Look at that right eye.

51:46 Thank you very much.
51:48 Timmy, that was just an amazing,
51:51 amazing fight.
51:53 Take us through what your eyes saw, Tim Bradley.
51:56 Well, early on, Navarrete got off to an early start.
51:58 You know, usually he starts off slow,
52:00 but he came out, he had intentions on
52:03 laying leather on Oscar Valdez.
52:05 You know, catching with shots like that from odd angles,
52:08 that's the tricky part of Navarrete.
52:10 You can't train for his awkwardness.
52:12 You can't train for his elusive hard punches
52:15 or his movement, you know, and timing.
52:17 But Oscar Valdez, I would say, came on midway.
52:20 He started finding his mark.
52:21 He started changing his game plan up,
52:23 going down to the body of Navarrete,
52:25 really focusing and keying in onto his body
52:28 to be able to set some kill shots up top.
52:30 But again, Navarrete finishing strong,
52:32 although he had a hurt hand,
52:34 Finney found a way within him to summon the strength
52:37 to finish strong on the back end of this fight.
52:39 And I believe he got this victory tonight.
52:42 What a fantastic show of heart, will,
52:45 and determination by both men tonight.
52:48 And how champions finish a fight
52:51 often tells you all you need to know.
52:54 How Navarrete finished that 12th round,
52:56 as you look at his dynamic output on CompuBox,
53:00 and a heck of an effort from Valdez.
53:02 He landed 34 punches, all power punches,
53:06 in the 12th round.
53:07 That is the most.
53:08 34 landed in the 12th round
53:11 is the most ever by an Oscar Valdez opponent
53:14 who came into the ring top 10 in the world
53:17 in terms of defensive efficiency.
53:19 Navarrete was 34 of 101 punches thrown
53:24 in that 12th round.
53:26 Mark Kregel, what is your scorecard read?
53:29 116, 112, 8 rounds to 4,
53:33 Emmanuel Navarrete, one guy didn't have a right hand,
53:36 one guy didn't have a right eye,
53:38 one thing we never counted on was Emmanuel Navarrete
53:41 dominating the distance and ultimately the fight
53:44 with a jab of all things.
53:46 He is a great fighter.
53:48 In front of all time great Mexican warriors ringside,
53:52 he fought like one.
53:54 On a day 41 years ago today,
53:57 when the world lost one of the great Mexican fighters,
54:00 Salvador Sanchez, Emmanuel Navarrete,
54:02 and Oscar Valdez put forth that level of performance.
54:06 Okay, let's determine it.
54:08 Let's hear from the judges.
54:13 Ladies and gentlemen here inside Desert Diamond Arena,
54:18 after 12 rounds we go to the judges scorecards
54:22 for the official decision.
54:24 Zachary Young scores the bout 116, 112.
54:30 Chris Wilson scores it 118, 110.
54:34 And Lisa Giampa scores it 119, 109.
54:39 All in favor of your winner by unanimous decision.
54:43 And still WBO junior lightweight champion of the world,
54:52 Emmanuel "Vaquero" Navarrete.
54:58 Emmanuel Navarrete, a unanimous decision winner
55:03 to retain his world championship
55:05 in an absolute classic where the score
