00:00 A very, very warm welcome to the third edition of the Outlook Responsible Tourism Summit and Awards 2018.
00:08 And we are so delighted to see so many of you that have come from far-flung corners of the country,
00:14 as well as the US, UK, India, well, of course, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, even Afghanistan.
00:22 And if only I could welcome you all in the wonderful languages and dialects that you all speak,
00:28 I'd feel extremely proud, but I know that's it's going to take a lifetime.
00:34 But it's exactly this, this diversity that we hope to celebrate today
00:41 and to figure out what tomorrow holds for us in the travel industry
00:45 and prepare for it together as South Asians and as global citizens.
00:51 So let me not get in the way of the future.
00:54 Let's begin the day like we always do, not by lighting a lamp or cutting a ribbon,
01:00 but by sharing a beautiful experience instead,
01:05 because I think that's what our industry is all about, experiences, right?
01:10 And I'm really, really proud to announce that we have amongst us today Manganyar Chanan Khan.
01:18 You know, you got a little glimpse of them earlier, but you're going to hear them in full force.
01:23 And he's India's only surmandal player and he's come with his troop.
01:30 And you'll soon discover that the surmandal is a 36-string instrument,
01:35 which is similar to the santur in its structure,
01:39 but unlike the santur, the strings have to be plucked, you know, with deft fingers.
01:45 And this musical maestro from Western Rajasthan's Manganyar community is here.
01:51 And really, what more could we ask for?
01:55 I would like to acknowledge special thanks that is due to Sangeet Kaur.
01:59 It's an independent folk music conservatory that has been traveling from village to village
02:04 in search of rare and endangered forms of music, folk music.
02:09 And thank you so much, Sangeet Kaur, for connecting us with Chanan Khanji,
02:12 who's come here from his home in the outskirts of Kanohi near Jaisalmer.
02:17 And in fact, Sangeet Kaur worked with Chanan Khanji to help him restore his surmandal
02:22 and they helped him to acquire a second one as well,
02:26 on which he's begun teaching his son, Bersi Khan,
02:29 who's incidentally accompanying him today as well.
02:32 Also part of his troop are Buare Khan on the khartal and Mehran Khan on the dholak.
02:37 So ladies and gentlemen, I give you Manganyar Chanan Khan and his troop
02:42 and a beautiful experience to start the day.
02:45 I think we can give them all a huge round of applause.
02:48 Warm morning welcome is a warm welcome.
02:59 And I hand you over to these absolutely talented musicians and artists.
