00:00 Affairs commentator Marco Vincenzino joins us now live for his take on the
00:04 situation. Marco, good evening to you, pleasure to have you on the program as
00:06 always. Will this be then the BRICS laying a foundation for a new world
00:10 front or will it be basically a house of sticks blown down by that various
00:14 differences? How do you see it? Listen, there's a fundamental question within the BRICS
00:20 itself and this divisions within the members and what basically you have is
00:25 two different views. One supported by Russia and China which wants to make the
00:30 BRICS group as a political force directly challenging the G7 in the West.
00:34 On the other hand you have Brazil and India pushing more for a non-aligned
00:38 group that will pursue economic interests for developing countries and
00:42 those are two fundamentally different views. Secondly, they do not have
00:46 clear criteria on who the members are. There'll be 60 heads of states attending
00:50 the summit in South Africa and Johannesburg. 23 are probably looking to
00:55 become members. Who will become members immediately possibly we're looking at
00:59 Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia. But once again, criteria is not there and
01:06 future vision of what actually, if you look at, I mean you have also have
01:10 differences in Brazil and India being democracies, Russia and China not being
01:13 democracies. Russia and China would want states like members would want Iran,
01:18 Belarus, Venezuela basically those who would help support and consolidate that
01:23 anti-western element. While the other countries as mentioned, Brazil and India
01:28 and other members they would want to omit will be less anti-western. The
01:33 economic potential, you've identified the differences and reasons why it might not
01:37 work, but their potential. It is actually huge, isn't it? It could be bigger
01:41 than the G7, bigger than the EU certainly. But they would have to
01:45 coordinate. What requires is not, BRICS was largely formed for a more of a
01:51 new world order. In certain ways is to other countries, emerging nations is to
01:56 try to pull away from the West, the Western dominated post-World War II
02:00 framework that when living in for several decades. And I think it's fair to
02:04 say that that Western dominated world is clearly come to an end. What is going to
02:09 replace it is still in the making. Russia and China will be the leading two
02:12 members. But there's a whole assortment of middle powers globally who are going
02:17 to be pursuing their own interests. So this is not like a Cold War 1945-1990
02:22 with two powers, US and Soviet Union with a duopoly. This is yes, China and US
02:27 having a big influence on determining the world in the 21st century. But many
02:32 many middle powers are going to be playing a much very very important role
02:36 in that. Marco you've set the scene very well for us. Thank you very much indeed
02:40 and hope we can speak again as this summit works its way through happening
02:45 in Johannesburg at the Santon Center there in the north of the South
02:50 African business capital if you like, Pretoria being the main political capital.
02:54 But most things happen in Johannesburg and Marco Vincenzino there who was our
02:59 expert talking about the BRICS summit. Let's give the latest on Ukraine.
