00:00 Good day, I am Naomi Timurshua and this is PTV News Now.
00:15 The White House has announced U.S. President Joe Biden's presence and participation in
00:19 the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India from September 7 to 10.
00:24 Biden's participation in the G20 Summit has been confirmed by the White House, which also
00:29 said his arrival will be two days before the summit's kickoff.
00:33 All leaders or heads of state belonging to the 20 wealthiest nations in the planet are
00:38 expected to attend.
00:40 Tops on the agenda include mitigation of the economic and social impact on the ongoing
00:44 Russian war on Ukraine, the transition to cleaner and renewable energy sources, an upping
00:50 capital and capacity of multilateral development banks.
00:57 A total number of nine candidates for the 2024 presidential elections from the GOP
01:02 or Republican Party will take front and center stage in Milwaukee a few hours from now for
01:08 the kickoff of the presidential debates.
01:11 But the elephant not in the room and prohibitive favorite for the GOP nomination will be elsewhere,
01:16 giving an interview to a former Fox News opinion anchor and then taking his private jet to
01:21 Atlanta, Georgia to surrender himself for booking and documentation in his latest racketeering
01:26 indictment.
01:27 Yet former President Donald Trump will be casting a huge shadow on the debate stage
01:32 in his absence by being one of the subjects or issues on stage.
01:36 Stephen Herman of VOA has the full story.
01:41 When the Republican candidates appear on the debate stage inside a downtown Milwaukee arena
01:46 Wednesday night, the overwhelming frontrunner, former President Donald Trump, says he will
01:52 not be joining them.
01:53 Only one of the expected participants, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, has been
01:59 vociferous in criticizing Trump.
02:02 Others such as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley
02:08 have taken a more measured approach, hoping to convince a party base that remains loyal
02:13 to Trump that they can implement the former president's right wing "Make America Great
02:18 Again" agenda without the legal encumbrances and other controversies.
02:24 Then there's Trump's former Vice President Mike Pence, who defends his ceremonial certification
02:30 of the 2020 election results, which he did against Trump's wishes.
02:34 He is still in the low single digits in most polls of potential 2024 Republican voters.
02:40 Referred to my hands, if they're small, something else must be small.
02:44 Even without Trump on the debate stage making his trademark outrageous comments, the conversation
02:50 will be largely about him, including the more than 90 felony charges the former president
02:56 faces for alleged crimes committed before, during and after his presidency, predicts
03:01 University of Mary Washington political science professor Stephen Farnsworth.
03:06 It creates a very, very difficult environment for the other Republicans because they have
03:11 their own ideas for what they want to do with respect to key issues like the economy or
03:16 Ukraine or immigration, but that doesn't mean they'll have much of a chance to talk about
03:20 it.
03:21 They'll be asked about Donald Trump.
03:22 The debate will not be very consequential for Trump.
03:25 He will still be in the front row regardless of what happens.
03:28 But for the others, there could be a viral moment, good or bad, that significantly changes
03:34 their polling numbers, notes American University School of International Service Provost Associate
03:39 Professor Jordan Tama.
03:41 We've seen from debates in past election seasons that candidates sometimes have a moment in
03:47 a debate that ends up disqualifying them because they look bad.
03:52 We've also seen moments in past debates where candidates have said something that got a
03:58 lot of attention for them in a positive way and gave them a huge boost.
04:02 Each candidate on Wednesday evening will be hoping their performance propels them to an
04:06 encore here when the Republican Party convenes in the city to select its general election
04:12 nominee in July of next year.
