00:00 Israel has moved troops, tanks and other military hardware to the border with the Gaza Strip,
00:04 as it prepares for a possible ground invasion of the Palestinian territory.
00:08 NATO allies expressed solidarity with Israel but warn its response has to be proportionate.
00:17 The IOC's executive board suspends the Russian Olympic Committee with immediate effect.
00:25 Israel has ordered 1.1 million people living in northern Gaza to evacuate to the south of
00:37 the enclave within 24 hours, but the United Nations warns there will be devastating
00:41 humanitarian consequences. On Thursday, Israel amassed more troops and military hardware on the
00:47 border with Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to crush the Hamas military
00:53 group after its ferocious attack last weekend.
00:55 The intense military response to the surprise Hamas attack has left Palestinians isolated in
01:20 Gaza. Israel has cut power and water supplies to the territory, home to over two million people.
01:26 Palestinian officials say at least 1,500 people have been killed,
01:31 a third of them children, in Israeli attacks. In his first public comments, the president of
01:35 the Palestinian Authority called Thursday for an immediate end to aggression against Palestinians.
01:41 During a meeting in Amman with King Abdul II of Jordan, Mahmoud Abbas rejected practices that
01:47 consist of killing or abusing civilians in either camp. He also called for the release
01:51 of civilian prisoners and detainees.
01:54 Tension between communities is running higher and higher in the divided city of Jerusalem. This
02:00 Thursday night, two Palestinian men were killed after shooting incidents with the police in front
02:07 of a police station just outside the old city of Jerusalem, and six police officers were injured,
02:14 one of them in critical condition. And it`s the second such incident this week.
02:20 On Tuesday, two other Palestinian men were killed by the police after throwing rocks and fireworks
02:27 at them. So, there is a lot of anxiety amongst the population in Jerusalem. And actually,
02:36 the streets are unusually quiet. You can hardly see any cars driving around. And people are very
02:45 much staying at home. And now, there is a lot of fear as what could happen over the weekend. It is
02:55 a prayer day for the Muslims on Friday and Shabbat for the Jews on Saturday. And it will be the
03:05 first, you know, religious celebrations since the first attacks occurred. So, it`s a very
03:13 -- so, nobody knows what might happen, but in any case, security is at a maximum level
03:24 in the capital. I`m Valerie Gouriat in Jerusalem for Euronews.
03:29 Israel continues its retribution on the Gaza Strip, this time targeting the port with boats
03:37 going up in flames. Any position linked one way or another to Hamas and other Palestinian militias
03:43 is a target. This comes after Israel suffered its biggest terrorist attack in its history,
03:50 killing over 1,300 Israelis. Now, it`s the two million inhabitants of the Strip who will pay
03:56 the price with a total siege ordered by Israel. The move has been widely criticized as it will
04:02 mainly affect civilians, including women and children.
04:05 We are working, operating militarily according to rules of international law, period.
04:12 Unequivocally. But we are at war. We are at war. We are at war with -- we are defending our homes.
04:20 We are protecting our homes. That`s the truth. And then when a nation protects its home,
04:26 it fights. And we will fight until we break their backbone.
04:30 Israel had deployed 300,000 soldiers to its borders in what is being presented as a future
04:40 invasion of Gaza. It is also distributing weapons among authorized people in kibbutz
04:46 near the border. In these images near Lebanon.
04:49 NATO is warning that hostile nations like Iran or groups like Hezbollah might take advantage of the
04:58 armed conflict between Hamas and Israel. Although NATO is not directly involved in the Middle East
05:04 conflict, the U.S. has stepped up military presence in the region. The Israeli defense
05:08 minister joined a meeting of NATO allies where he showed fellow ministers a video of a Hamas
05:14 massacre. Member states called for Israel to respond to Hamas attacks proportionately.
05:19 We saw a shocking video and of course, the reports are shocking. And that`s also the reason
05:30 why allies have so strongly condemned these horrific terrorist attacks against
05:36 civilians in Israel and against Israel.
05:41 As this conflict evolves, it is important to protect civilians. And this was also clearly
05:50 expressed by allies. There are rules of war. There are the request for proportionality.
06:00 And this was highlighted by many allies. NATO also says they are alert to the recent
06:06 damage to an undersea gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia. Secretary General Jens
06:11 Stoltenberg says NATO will respond if the attack proves to be a deliberate sabotage.
06:17 It is obvious that gas pipelines, cable, power cables, internet cables,
06:26 these types of undersea infrastructure are of critical importance for our societies.
06:32 So, this has been an issue which has been high on the NATO agenda, part of our efforts related
06:38 to resilience for many years. And many things have been done to protect this critical infrastructure.
06:44 A surprise attendance at the summit by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky proved fruitful,
06:49 with the U.S. announcing $200 million of extra military aid to Ukraine.
06:54 In addition, over 100 million euros was pledged by the Ukraine Contact Group.
06:58 And Germany has considerably stepped up its support. Shona Murray, Euronews, NATO.
07:03 The IOC`s executive board has suspended the Russian Olympic Committee with immediate effect
07:12 until further notice. This decision follows the ROC`s recognition of regional sports organizations
07:18 in four Ukrainian territories that Russia has claimed to have annexed since the full-scale
07:22 invasion in 2022. Speaking after the opening day of an executive board meeting in Mumbai,
07:28 IOC spokesman Mark Adams made the announcement whilst highlighting the consequences.
07:33 The Russian Olympic Committee is no longer entitled to operate as a National Olympic Committee,
07:39 as defined in the Olympic Charter, and cannot receive any funding from the Olympic movement.
07:45 Adams added that the suspension hadn`t yet affected the possibility of neutral Russian
07:50 athletes competing at next year`s Paris Olympics. Currently, IOC sanctions mean no international
07:56 sporting events can be organized in either Russia or Belarus, whilst the flags and national
08:00 anthems of both countries must not be used.
08:07 Sunday`s election in Poland could be crucial for the future of the EU.
08:12 The country`s two main parties, the conservative nationalist right-wing Law and Justice Party,
08:18 currently in power, and the liberal pro-European right-wing civil platform are both unlikely to
08:23 be able to form a government alone. Members of the European Parliament realized the importance
08:30 of the vote, but are all hoping for different outcomes.
08:33 I would say that the main difference is that the current opposition has clearly
09:02 taken a constructive stance when it comes to engaging on the European level. So, when we see
09:08 the challenges that are ahead of us, be it around the question how are we going to shape the green
09:13 transformation, migration politics, also other issues, they have maybe taken conservative
09:20 standpoints, but they are constructive in engaging on the European level.
09:23 The current Polish government has been taking a hostile attitude towards the EU for many years
09:28 now. The main clash between Warsaw and Brussels concerns respect for the rule of law
09:35 and independence of the judiciary from political influence.
09:39 (SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE)
10:04 On Sunday, Brussels will keep an eye not only on the elections, but also on the Polish government's
10:08 referendum, which contains four questions, one of which will ask Poles if they support the
10:13 admission of what the government calls illegal immigrants from the Middle East and Africa,
10:18 in line with the EU's mandatory relocation rules designed to ease the burden on the
10:22 bloc's border countries.
10:32 Republican Steve Scalise has pulled out of the race for US House Speaker after meeting
10:37 fierce resistance from hardliners within his party. The Louisiana congressman narrowly beat
10:43 far-right candidate Jim Jordan to the party's nomination, but realised on Thursday he wouldn't
10:48 be able to secure the 217 votes necessary to get elected. Political pressure is mounting on
10:55 Republicans as the House enters its second week without a Speaker, leaving it unable to function
11:01 during a time of turmoil in the US and overseas.
11:04 It's a long way from a cow chopped in half and preserved in a tank of formaldehyde,
11:12 but these paintings are by Damien Hirst. He may have been the infanterrible of the British art
11:19 scene, but now he seems to have calmed down. The Secret Gardens painting series is being shown for
11:25 the first time at the Friis London Art Fair, which will run from the 11th to the 15th of October.
11:31 From small beginnings, Friis has become an international fair,
11:35 with sister shows in Los Angeles, New York and Seoul.
