00:00 It's been a month and residents of Derna in Libya are still shoveling mud from inside
00:07 their homes.
00:08 Streets are lined with debris and broken furniture.
00:11 Some of it washed away during the floods.
00:13 Some thrown out by residents who said it had started to rot.
00:17 Mahmoud has been cleaning his home for three weeks.
00:20 He says he can't afford to pay someone else to do it.
00:23 "There was water everywhere and the furniture got soaked.
00:28 Everything could rot.
00:29 We've asked the government to help us clean up not just our home but everyone's homes."
00:34 "It's been a month but there hasn't been any improvement.
00:38 We've been sleeping at other people's homes.
00:40 Unlike others who have left the city for Benghazi or Tripoli, we refused to leave.
00:44 We had to stay so maybe the state will find a solution for us.
00:48 They've asked us to register on these lists but we haven't seen anything yet."
00:53 Anger against the authorities soared in the wake of the floods.
00:57 Many residents complained there hadn't been adequate warnings to evacuate.
01:00 There was also incomprehension as to how two major dams burst.
01:04 It was this that caused the worst damage in the city.
01:08 Several current and former officials, including the mayor of Derna, have been detained on
01:12 suspicion of mismanagement and negligence before the floods but also after.
01:17 The mayor in particular is under scrutiny for mismanagement of the funds allocated for
01:22 the reconstruction efforts.
01:24 A month after the disaster, bodies are still being recovered on a nearly daily basis.
01:30 The authorities have also raised concerns about the contamination of the groundwater
01:34 as they struggle to deal with the corpses as well as dead animals, refuse and chemical
01:39 substances.
