00:00 Josh, that's got to be quite a painful defeat. What are your emotions at this time?
00:06 Yeah, disappointment. Yeah, really tough, tough defeat to take. Obviously disappointed
00:12 in Delhi and had a good few days and worked really hard and did a lot of things hoping
00:17 to put it right today, but it didn't work out.
00:22 You know, I mean, there's a lot of aspects going on there, but where do you think the
00:26 game got away from you? Did that class and innings sort of reset the whole game at that
00:31 point?
00:32 Yeah, I think that was the main bit of the game. We had them five down there and if we
00:38 could have found a way to break that partnership and take another wicket, we know we could
00:42 have looked like restricting them to 340 or 350, which probably would have been a really
00:47 good chase on that pitch. I think getting up to 400 was an excellent score. It sort
00:54 of took the wind away from us and it was always going to be tough from there. We needed everything
00:58 to go perfect to pull off a chase like that.
01:02 Conditions-wise, there was a bit of cramp going on. People looked, best will in the
01:07 world, knackered, sick, unhappy. Any regrets on your part for your choice at the toss really
01:14 and not sort of sticking to the half grid and letting them have a bit of that?
01:18 Yeah, I think you always reflect after games and question your decisions. Certainly with
01:25 hindsight, the physicality of that innings, potentially batting first would have been
01:32 a better decision. But I'm not going to sit here and question that in that sense and say
01:38 you should have done this or you should have done that. It's a decision I took at the
01:40 time. I thought it was the right one and I still believe if we were chasing 340, 350,
01:46 we would have done really well in those conditions.
01:49 Yeah, a few things didn't go right. Obviously, Rhys picking up a knock and unsure if he was
01:55 going to come back. So I thought Joe Root did a fantastic job there filling in. And
02:00 yeah, physically it was tough. Everyone's efforts were... you can't fold anyone's efforts.
02:06 But yeah, Clarson and Jansen put together a fantastic partnership there.
02:10 Of course, it's a big chase, 400 is not easy. But did you think your batting will go the
02:23 way it went? I mean, 170, even that looked very difficult at one time.
02:28 No, obviously not. You know, some fantastic players there. And even though it's going
02:34 to be a tough ask, there's still belief in the dressing room. We'd need everything to
02:38 sort of go right to pull off a chase like that. But, you know, getting things caught
02:43 down the leg side, caught leg slip, you know, those kind of dismissals, you know, sort of
02:48 feels like it's not going to be your day.
02:54 How was the sickness issue on the pitch? Who was unwell? It looked as if Rash didn't feel
03:00 very well and it looked as if Rhys wasn't quite the same bowler after that blow. Was
03:04 that really difficult to deal with? You needed people to bowl through those issues?
03:09 Yeah, obviously, you know, Rash was struggling a little bit with the sickness before the
03:14 game. But, you know, I felt like he could get out there and perform and performed really
03:20 well. So, credit to him for that. Yeah, Rhys obviously took a nasty blow on his finger,
03:26 which is, you know, we'll see how that is tomorrow. But, you know, it carried him to
03:32 come back and try. But, yeah, physically it was a really demanding innings. And like I
03:39 said before, it makes you question maybe in those kind of conditions batting first may
03:45 have been the right call at the toss.
03:47 And the balance of the side was obviously quite different to what we've become to expect
03:52 from England. You know, usually loads of bowling options and batting quite deep. You've gone
03:56 a different way with that and it hasn't worked out today. Is it too early to reflect on what
04:01 you might do going forward with the balance of the side?
04:04 Yeah, I think, you know, sort of try and reflect logically and unemotionally. So, yeah, tomorrow
04:12 morning and stuff, I think that's a good time. Yeah, we thought that was going to be a good
04:16 balance for this game on this wicket where pace generally is the thing that takes the
04:25 most wickets here. But, you know, we were outplayed, we were short of our best and that's
04:30 the result we came up with.
04:32 And have you had a chance to think about where this leaves England in the tournament? I mean,
04:36 mathematically you can still progress, but you kind of need snookers. Is that how you
04:42 see it? And what could you do to turn it round after four games?
04:46 Yeah, it certainly leaves us in a tough position. There's no room for error from here on in.
04:52 That's going to be incredibly tough, but, you know, we'll sit down and go again. That's
04:58 all you can do in this situation.
05:04 Just after three defeats out of four, the manner of defeats, I think this one is the
05:09 heaviest that England have ever had in terms of runs. How do you kind of maintain that
05:15 belief and you talk about being quite logical about it. Logic says that this is a trend
05:20 now rather than blips. How do you kind of deal with that and keep going?
05:25 Yeah, with complete honesty. I think it's obvious that we're not performing to our best.
05:31 It's my job as captain and along with the rest of the team to work out how we can get
05:37 back to playing that brand of cricket and the style and not just only that, but sort
05:43 of just playing to our potential and getting back to our best. So effort comes down to
05:49 a lot of that. A few things here and there which we need to keep challenging ourselves
05:54 on and working on. In this situation, that's all you can do. It certainly won't be anyone
06:00 giving up or having those kind of thoughts. We'll just have to dust ourselves down and
06:06 stick our chests out and go again.
06:09 Is this the toughest spot that you've found yourself in as an international cricketer?
06:13 I've been in a few. I've certainly experienced plenty I'd say in my career, which makes you
06:22 feel like you're in the best possible place you could ever be to deal with something like
06:29 this. I've gone through lots of ups and downs in my own career and teams I've played in.
06:33 There's certainly challenges, but from challenges come opportunity. That's certainly the lens
06:39 I'll be looking through.
06:45 Before the World Cup started, the general impression in India and expert opinion was
06:50 England team was better than 2019. That was the perception. Now with three defeats, India,
06:58 Pakistan, Australia, qualifying for the last four may be difficult for you.
07:05 Yeah, it's going to be incredibly difficult. We haven't left ourselves any margin from
07:11 this point on, but we'll keep the belief.
07:15 Is frequent travelling taking a toll on the boys? Do you consider this as a setback for
07:21 the boys that after every match you have to travel to different cities throughout the
07:25 World Cup?
07:26 No, I think we knew that was going to be the case with our schedule. Lots of the guys have
07:32 played IPL cricket and know what it's like to travel. We're all incredibly professional,
07:38 so we won't be using that as an excuse.
07:43 Was there some unhappiness from you guys for the way that Heinrich Klassen celebrated his
07:47 century? What was the chat around that on the field after he celebrated his 100th?
07:53 I think he was obviously emotional to score 100. I don't think he needed to celebrate
07:59 in Mark Wood's face and credit to him. He recognised that a couple of seconds after
08:05 and he apologised. They played a great knock and I think he apologised straight away. There's
08:11 no health limiter.
