00:00 Working to the steady rhythm of carving knives, White Apron's staff meticulously butcher,
00:06 process and package chunks of red meat.
00:09 Located in southern Chad, this state-of-the-art facility lies at the heart of a government
00:14 plan to turn the cattle-trading nation into a meat-exporting powerhouse.
00:18 "They used to slaughter animals on the street.
00:21 It's very anorexic and very dangerous to their health also.
00:25 But now we have set up a proper unit where we can put every food safety norms."
00:31 As meat importers shift away from war-torn Sudan, Chad is hoping to claim a slice of
00:36 the lucrative market.
00:38 In June, the country began exporting packaged meat to Gabon, Egypt and Nigeria with refrigerated
00:44 trucks.
00:45 And with over a hundred million heads of cattle, it's confident in its ability to meet growing
00:50 demand.
00:51 "There are enough cattle in Chad.
00:54 You can find all the cattle you want in the same day."
00:58 The livestock sector is already a cornerstone of Chad's economy, contributing around 30
01:03 percent of GDP.
01:05 And while the country seeks to modernize its flagship industry, it's so far refused to
01:10 introduce intensive breeding.
01:13 "We are currently using a pastoralist breeding method.
01:18 We do not want to abandon this traditional way of breeding cattle in Chad."
01:25 Banking on meat in order to reshape Chad's economic landscape, and maybe even compete
01:31 with beef heavyweights like India and Brazil.
