Pope Francis condemns the "immense tragedy" and "useless slaughter" of civilians in conflicts such as in Gaza and Ukraine, and says those killed should not be considered "collateral damage", in his New Year's address to diplomats at the Vatican. In a speech dominated by calls for an end to conflicts around the world, the pontiff says people "need to realise more clearly that civilian victims are not 'collateral damage' but men and woman, with names and surnames, who lose their lives."

00:00 Perhaps we do not realize that the victims are not collateral damage.
00:08 They are men and women, with names and surnames, who lose their lives.
00:15 They are children who remain orphans and deprived of the future.
00:21 They are people who suffer from hunger, thirst, and cold,
00:27 who remain mutilated because of the power of modern order.
00:34 If we are able to look each of them in the eye,
00:39 to call them by name and to evoke their personal history,
00:44 we will see war for what it is.
00:49 Nothing more than a human tragedy and a useless massacre,
00:56 which affects the dignity of every person on this earth.
