00:00 I am inviting you all. I'm sure you'll enjoy the spectacle. It's a great place to be and we want to make you feel comfortable because whenever we come around here we do feel comfortable.
00:15 We are well looked after and I think we always look after you properly.
00:22 It's a real pleasure to be here and I keep coming here because I love this place.
00:31 The people here are so friendly. They are not friendly. They love cricket.
00:39 We feel comfortable playing cricket here and I hope it continues.
00:45 I think it's hampered our cricket a little bit. There are youngsters now earning so much money playing the shorter games that they are refusing to play for their countries.
01:02 I find that strange in the sense that Indians still want to play for India, Australians still want to play for Australia, Sri Lankans still want to play for Sri Lanka, Pakistan still want to play for Pakistan and all the other countries.
01:18 We only have 5 million people and this is a walk in life. If you train 30 people it takes you 3 years to be a best cricketer.
01:32 So when you train those 30 people and then you lose 15 or 10 of them. I never captained a country before I became captain of the West Indian.
01:45 I think it's difficult for West Indians because we have 14 countries with different cultures and backgrounds. There are countries like India, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, India, South Africa.
02:05 But we have a great section of people and they are all different. We have different cultures, we have different religions.
02:18 The point is that you have to understand people. You have to realize that you have to gain their trust. If you gain their trust and respect the things that are earned, you can't get that just like that.
02:40 So the point is that you have to get in touch with them before you can be ready to be a captain. But the point is that we have those problems and we got over them.
02:51 We don't hate people who are of a lighter complexion. We played with them and eventually things changed and it changed for the better because a lot more of our players are more black, Indian, Portuguese.
03:14 We even had a Chinese guy who played for the West Indians. Things changed quite a lot and it took some time and it was for the better.
03:28 I have great memories here of this round and I had one or two dicey moments I presume. I think the point about it here is that the people in Canada just love sport and they love cricket.
03:49 And as a West Indian we have always had a love shown to us by the people of Calcutta. I will always have great memories of this place and I'm sure we have a lot of our ex-players who have been here.
04:11 It's wonderful to see what it looks like. I'm sorry I'm not here for you today so I could have admired it a little bit more. But as I always said that the people of India, they make you feel that you are playing the right game.
04:29 Because they love cricketers, they love West Indians and they make you feel so happy.
04:36 And you realise that the shorter game is taking a lot out of you and you have to get that sort of rest. You can be mentally tired a lot longer.
04:47 And that's why I think India might not realise that because some of their teams they make you feel a little bit too much of a team and some guys are being rested.
05:04 So that is not a bad thing because you want to put your best team out there and you don't want to put half the players on the field.
05:12 Most of our players, we didn't change our team that much. Even in the Wanderers, our team was merely like Test match teams.
05:22 So we didn't have to remove much of that respect. The team meetings were important and guys knew exactly what they had to do.
05:31 And we had a type of discipline that was needed for both types of players.
05:38 There are a couple of things that I think we should not do improperly.
05:45 I think that if we are 12,000 miles away from home, we are too desperate.
05:52 And then you have to play, you only get to play 2-4 games before you play the game.
05:59 So if you have any youngsters, you can't bludder youngsters, you can't say I'll take 2-4 best players, young players and bludder them for 4 games.
06:12 To get that experience, it's not that easy.
06:16 I think we need to look at how we schedule our cricket and try and give our younger players the chance to improve and improve quickly.
06:27 I still want to see them play cricket, I don't know how you feel about it.
06:32 I don't mind the T20, I don't mind the Pro. Players are being paid much better, they are getting a better living and that's what we all want to look forward to.
06:43 But still, I want to know what I've done in a Test match.
06:48 As I said, T20 is an exhibition and a Test match is an examination.
06:58 [Applause]
07:21 (audience laughing)
