00:02 - What the NFL does not want,
00:04 and I hear this from clubs,
00:05 is that they don't want the coaches being distracted.
00:08 So what they've done is,
00:10 if you're coaching this weekend or Monday night
00:13 for the Bucs or Eagles,
00:14 you cannot interview in person until the following Monday,
00:18 which is the 22nd of January.
00:20 And that way, you know, these guys don't have to travel.
00:23 They actually couldn't travel anyway to do interviews.
00:25 But in years past, many years ago when I first started,
00:29 clubs would actually fly to the city
00:30 where the guy's coaching,
00:31 and they would sit down with these clubs
00:33 on like a Friday night after the last practice.
00:35 The league doesn't want that anymore.
00:37 It's just not right.
00:38 Also, with these virtual interviews by Zoom or Skype,
00:42 typically Zoom or Microsoft Teams,
00:45 you can interview those coaches who are coaching now
00:48 starting next week only virtually,
00:50 before the game, before the divisional round,
00:51 but you cannot interview them in person.
00:53 Now, once they lose,
00:55 they could interview them in person, of course.
00:57 Now, the coaches who can interview now are
01:00 the coaches who are not in the playoffs,
01:02 and also college coaches.
01:03 Like if a club wants to interview a college head coach,
01:06 they will put a request in with the school,
01:08 let them know they want to interview them,
01:09 and they could do it like that.
01:10 So that's the way those will go.
01:12 So a lot of these are going to be delayed
01:13 in terms of hiring,
01:15 because a lot of these teams want to get these guys
01:18 in front of them, and they can't in person.
01:20 So what they're doing this week,
01:22 that's why you're seeing all the reports of requests,
01:24 because they have to get them in now.
01:25 They have to get them in by the end of this next coming week.
01:29 And once they get them all in,
01:31 they'll look to interview them again in person.
01:33 That's the most important thing here,
01:35 because one thing I do want to get off started here,
01:37 and I remember this many years ago happening.
01:39 Like, let's say you see a report,
01:40 and I've been one of the people
01:41 who put these things out over the years.
01:43 Like so-and-so is a favorite for this job.
01:45 Well, that's until the interview.
01:47 Like I'll give an example.
01:48 When Mike Tomlin became the Steelers head coach,
01:50 he was seventh on their list.
01:51 No one thought they were going to hire him many years ago.
01:54 Russ Grim, their offensive line coach,
01:55 was supposed to get the job.
01:57 Didn't go well for him.
01:58 Mike Tomlin blew them away, and he became the head coach.
02:01 So when you see someone's a favorite,
02:02 and they wind up not becoming that head coach,
02:04 something probably happened in the interview.
02:06 It's almost always what happens.
