00:00 No good can happen to a single person. We all are not only tied together, we all are
00:11 just one. Anything wrong, when I say wrong, the only wrong is suffering. Any suffering
00:24 that befalls on any creature of any consciousness, anywhere, is one's own personal suffering.
00:37 To think that one can live in a secluded or isolated way is to just live wishfully. Facts
00:47 will not bear that out. The earth, the grass, the air, water, we arise from all of these.
01:01 We are organically linked to all of these. If grass suffers, it is impossible that we
01:07 won't suffer. If the moon suffers, it is impossible that we won't suffer. Our fate is linked
01:17 to the fate of the moon. If any human being or an insect or a bird or an animal receives
01:26 suffering anywhere in this universe, his tears are going to be our own tears. We may not
01:36 consciously know that. We may keep sleeping. We may even keep with our excitements and
01:46 our phony celebrations. But every time a bird like this, you look at these birds, what I
01:55 am saying right now is coming from the health of these birds, if they stop chirping, I'll
02:03 have to stop speaking. Their voice is my voice. This is compassion. So for my own individual
02:14 good, I must also let my entire system know what the birds are to me. Because there is
02:30 no really personal or individual good or welfare. It's either you, me, him, her, everybody and
02:42 the birds together or it's none of us. So we do have responsibility for our actions.
02:51 If our actions are affecting our surroundings or others or if our actions make someone suffer,
02:58 so we do have responsibility for that. Yes, but our actions will keep becoming causes
03:09 of suffering as long as we keep believing in otherness. You see, this is the point we
03:20 start from. We say, this is me and that is you and you are an other. And now me being
03:30 me and you being you, which is separate and distinct, I must take care of you. That is
03:37 not possible. The intention is good, but that won't happen. Otherness itself is the mother
03:44 culprit. As long as we talk of responsibility with respect to others, it would always be
03:54 a taught responsibility. It would always be a conditioned responsibility. Real responsibility
04:00 is not with respect to others. Real responsibility does not even think of others. See, at this
04:06 moment I'm talking to you. Apparently I'm responsible to you. I must talk sense. I must
04:16 not waste your time. I must say something that is useful to you. But the fact of the
04:23 matter is I'm not even thinking of you. And that is how real responsibility operates.
04:29 If I think of you, then I have made you into a separate person. Because thought is dualistic.
04:39 Whatever is the object of thought is necessarily an alien, an other. So as I speak to you,
04:47 the mark of my love is that I must not think of you. Because if I think of you, then I
04:53 repeat I have separated you. If one thinks that one is responsible towards the environment,
04:59 towards animals, towards himself, towards his kid, wife, society, anybody, then one
05:05 would proceed to an extent and stop there because all responsibility of the mind stops.
05:12 Only the responsibility of the heart is unlimited. And in the heart there is no separation. In
05:18 the mind there is only separation. Mind will say I'm responsible to him, to him, to him,
05:23 to him and that responsibility will be a pattern based responsibility, a pre-decided responsibility.
05:30 Beyond that you won't operate. The police is responsible towards you, but it won't cross
05:36 the Rubicon. Your friends have a responsibility towards you, but even that responsibility
05:43 meets a line somewhere, a boundary somewhere. You are responsible towards your loved ones,
05:54 but even that responsibility is not infinite. So, with all his apparently good intentions,
06:03 man will keep on hurting and harming himself and the so-called others as long as he operates
06:11 through a concept of responsibility. Responsibility has to be a thing of the heart. It has to
06:19 be direct and pure love. So, I do not really enjoy the word responsibility because it stands
06:29 basically for dualistic separation. Love is the word. If I am in love with the insect
06:36 there and if I really know what love is, then do I have to be responsible? Do I really have
06:43 to learn from others how far I can go with that insect? Then I'll know, then I'll really
06:51 know and from where will that knowledge arise, that one does not know. But one just knows,
06:58 one just knows. You meet a cow on the road and you just know, you just know. You meet
07:04 a small puppy or you may even meet a snake or a lion, you just know. Right now I am limiting
07:16 this to sentient beings for the purpose of this conversation. But I may even extend it
07:22 to insentient beings. One knows what one has to be with respect to a mountain because a
07:30 mountain is just not a mountain. The mountain is my right arm. I cannot denude the mountain.
