Chicago P.D. is shining the spotlight on Atwater in the upcoming episode, with the Intelligence Unit facing a series of jewelry store robberies. This will be the first Atwater-centric hour of the 2024 TV schedule, and LaRoyce Hawkins has some heavy lifting to do in the role. The actor spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of the new episode, including about his character's preparedness as a mentor and the real-llife advice that Hawkins got in from One Chicago alum Mykelti Williamson.

Called “Split Second,” the new Chicago P.D. episode will see Atwater turning to an unexpected source for support during the investigation into the jewelry store robberies. Whether he’ll need this support professionally, emotionally, or a combination of the two remains to be seen, but the most recent episode certainly put Torres through the wringer!

00:00 I always tend to think of Atwater as the most kind of reliable or steady cop in the unit.
00:05 Really?
00:06 Yeah.
00:08 They I mean, you know, you know, that that means a lot.
00:13 That means a lot. You know, I think, you know, Atwater is built a certain way, you
00:18 know, and it's great that you feel like that.
00:22 I think I think that's the that's the intention.
00:24 You know, obviously nobody's perfect, but I got I got a great note.
00:30 From a big homie of mine before the season started, Michael T.
00:36 Williamson, who who we know, you know, played a very pivotal role as an adversary to
00:43 Voight, you know, I'm saying in seasons prior, I was talking to him just trying to get
00:48 some, you know, direction or advice about how to approach the season.
00:51 And he told me something interesting about exploring my imperfections more.
00:57 Which I think, you know, for historically, I fell into.
01:02 An easy trap being the only, you know, the prominent black character on a show like
01:10 this, I think there can there can be a pressure sometimes to want to hold the whole
01:16 culture on your shoulders.
01:17 And so I would approach every every scene, you know, ready to challenge the writers to
01:26 make that water more righteous.
01:28 And, you know, there were moments when I think I needed to be that precious.
01:34 But I think there are also moments where I didn't have to be and where my imperfections
01:40 could have been explored a little more because I'm learning that audiences relate more
01:46 to mistakes than than righteousness, especially when they're redeemable.
01:50 Right. So with that being said, that's.
01:55 That was that was an approach that I walked into this whole season with and it really
01:59 helped me in this episode, make some decisions that I didn't love, but I could live
02:03 with, you know, it helped me take some pages out of which playbook where, you know, you
02:10 apply a dark pressure, but you but you get the bright results you need.
02:15 And yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:19 So I'm grateful.
02:20 I'm grateful for T for for opening that up for me, because I think exponentially it
02:24 helped me in a lot of different other ways.
