00:27 Chile has officially joined a coalition of countries
00:30 backing South Africa in its genocide case against Israel
00:34 at the International Court of Justice.
00:36 Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced the decision
00:38 on Saturday, expressing deep concern
00:40 over the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza,
00:43 particularly the impact on women and children.
00:46 Chile will become a party to and support the case
00:49 that South Africa presented against Israel
00:51 before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
00:54 Boric stated, addressing the National Congress,
00:57 he strongly criticized the Israeli military
00:59 for employing indiscriminate and disproportionate force,
01:02 emphasizing that these acts demand
01:04 a firm and permanent response from the international
01:06 community.

01:47 Previously, President Boric had described the war in Gaza
01:49 as having no justification and being unacceptable.
01:53 Earlier this year, in January, Chile, along with Mexico,
01:56 submitted a case to the International Criminal Court
01:58 to investigate the ongoing conflict in Palestine.
02:01 Chilean Foreign Minister Alberto Van Claverin
02:04 reiterated the country's commitment,
02:06 stating that Chile is interested in supporting
02:08 the investigation into any possible war crimes,
02:11 wherever they might occur.
02:13 Chile has recognized Palestine as a state since 2011.
02:17 South Africa initially lodged its complaint against Israel
02:20 with the ICJ on December 29 last year,
02:22 following nearly three months of aggressive military actions
02:25 by Israel against Gaza.
02:27 The complaint requests the court to declare
02:29 that Israel's actions amount to genocide
02:31 and to order the regime to cease its attacks
02:33 on the people of Gaza.
02:35 The ICJ found it plausible that Israel's actions could
02:38 constitute genocide and issued an initial ruling,
02:41 ordering Israel to refrain from acts that would fall
02:44 under the Genocide Convention.
02:46 In March, the World Court issued another verdict,
02:48 mandating that Israel ensure basic food supplies reach
02:51 people in Gaza.
02:52 Last month, South Africa submitted an additional request
02:54 to the ICJ for three urgent provisional measures,
02:57 probing Israel's violation of the 1948 UN Genocide Convention.
03:01 The top UN court then ordered Israel to halt
03:03 military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafa,
03:05 where displaced Palestinians were seeking safety
03:08 from Israel's military offensive,
03:10 to establish maintaining corridors,
03:11 and to allow the world body to investigate genocide.
03:14 Despite these ICJ rulings, Israel has pledged
03:17 to continue its military operations in Rafa.
03:19 Although the orders of the ICJ are legally binding,
03:21 they lack significant enforcement mechanisms.
03:24 Several other countries, including Egypt, Libya,
03:26 Turkey and Colombia have formally requested
03:28 to join the case against Israel.
