00:00Five tech and administrative staff from various offices who decided to go rogue have been
00:04rounded up by the NBI as the major suspects of cybercriminal ring that has terrorized
00:10and scammed the military and major banking institutions since 2016.
00:15And as our Noel Talakay reports, one of them, an administrative staff worker at a major
00:20newspaper outlet, is implicating the paper's senior tech editor and information technology
00:25specialist who also is an in-demand TV news resources person for digital and cyberspace
00:31affairs.
00:32These are the five suspects allegedly engaged in cybercrime activities in the country since
00:402016.
00:41The National Bureau of Investigation, or NBI, said at least three of them are hackers, with
00:47one college undergrad, the other one working as a cybersecurity researcher, and the other
00:54a data security officer of Manila Bulletin where he admitted the crime was committed.
01:22Due to his involvement, the Manila Bulletin issued a statement.
01:26It said that the company and its employees are law-abiding citizens.
01:31It also assured the public that Manila Bulletin will adhere to the law of the land.
01:37Moreover, based on the information provided by the NBI, the three suspects started their
01:43hacking activities in 2016, and they have been to different big hacking groups such
01:50as Philippine Luzik, Global Zik, Global Security Hackers, and Pinoy Luzik.
01:56They hacked some banks in the country like the Philippine National Bank, Security Bank,
02:02Banco de Oro, and Union Bank, and also some government agencies.
02:26The agency added that they were accosted in one of the hotels in Metro Manila before
02:32the suspects presented to the media they had already inquested and gave their judicial
02:37confessions, while the two remaining suspects were arrested due to their scamming activities
02:51or involvement.
02:52Meanwhile, the Philippine Army urged the public to stop exploiting the digital space
02:58and assured their safety in cyberspace and to combat digital threats, while the Department
03:05of Information and Communication Technology has lauded the latest accomplishments of the
03:10NBI, which is the arrest of five cybercriminals, furthermore, charges in violation of the Cyber
03:18Crime Prevention Act of 2012 and Data Privacy Act of 2012 have been filed against the five
03:25suspects.
