00:00Can the BJP IT cell's head honcho get your Instagram posts deleted?
00:04The Wire and Meta are at loggerheads about it.
00:09An Instagram handle at Cringe Archivist posted a satire video of a UP resident
00:15worshipping a statue of Yogi Adityanath,
00:18which they said was deleted by Instagram within 2 minutes.
00:21The user shared a screenshot with The Wire,
00:24saying the post was cited as being against Instagram's nudity and sexual activity guidelines.
00:29But both the man and the idol were fully clothed in the video, Cringe Archivist said.
00:34The Wire then ran a story about how multiple posts
00:37from the same handle had been recently removed by Instagram.
00:43The Wire published a follow-up report in which they claimed that the post
00:47had been removed not due to an algorithm glitch,
00:50but because the BJP IT cell's Amit Malviya had reported it.
00:53The Wire said they accessed an internal Instagram report
00:57which confirmed that the post's Malviya reports are removed without any moderators reviewing them.
01:02They said it's because Malviya had ex-check or cross-check privileges
01:06which allegedly protected some elite accounts.
01:09The Wall Street Journal had first reported Meta's ex-check program in September last year.
01:14Some users are whitelisted, rendered immune from enforcement actions,
01:19while others are allowed to post rule-violating material
01:22pending Facebook employee reviews that often never come.
01:25The Wire shared screenshots from the alleged Instagram report
01:28which showed that Malviya had reported the post,
01:31review was not required because he had cross-check privileges,
01:34and it wasn't moderated by Meta.
01:37The Wire claimed that Malviya can post whatever he wants
01:40without having to follow community guidelines
01:42and also have posts removed at will.
01:48Andy Stone, Meta's communication director,
01:50tweeted that the documentation shared by The Wire seemed to be fabricated.
01:54Cross-check has nothing to do with the ability to report posts.
01:58The posts in question were surfaced for review by automated systems, not humans.
02:03That evening, The Wire published yet another article.
02:06This time, they released emails that Stone had allegedly sent to his team.
02:10The emails showed that he wanted to know how the Instagram report had leaked
02:14and wanted the journalist and The Wire's editor Siddharth Varadarajan
02:18to be put on some sort of a watchlist.
02:20Meta's chief information security officer, Guy Rosen,
02:23then tweeted that The Wire's stories were untrue.
02:26He said that the cross-check program had nothing to do with reporting posts,
02:29the URL in the report was not in use,
02:32and that the email was fake.
02:36It wasn't surprising that experts online were quick to chime in.
02:39Many said that the communications released by The Wire were fake,
02:43while others stood by The Wire's credibility.
02:45There was also a theory that The Wire had been deliberately fed
02:48misinformation to discredit the publication.
02:50But Varadarajan rubbished these claims
02:52and said they had multiple sources confirming the story.
02:55And he would publish more evidence soon.
