00:00Yeah, that's basically how I train on Cobra Kai. Train like me, and you can look like this.
00:08Hello Men's Health. My name is Jacob Scott Thomas Bertrand, and this is how I train for Cobra Kai.
00:18I started martial arts like most children in a strip mall karate class
00:23when I was about six years old, and I got my blue belt, but I forgot all of it before we started filming.
00:29It did not help me at all, and then when we started filming, they were like,
00:33hey, you look kind of uncoordinated when you hold your hands up like that.
00:37So we did a month of training. After we did that, I realized a month is not enough,
00:42and I started training on my off time, so I trained a lot of Muay Thai, a lot of Jiu Jitsu.
00:47That didn't help me at all, but it was just fun to do.
00:50I don't know. I normally don't work out with weights.
00:54For some reason, my body is too weak to do it, and my brain doesn't have fun doing it.
00:59So a lot of the workouts that I do are more dynamic, maybe.
01:04Today, today we are going to be doing the warm-up stretches techniques and little workout
01:09that we do on set before we do fights. All right, now let's get into it.
01:15Welcome, everyone. You've made it to the shirtless part of the video.
01:18It's very important for what we're about to be doing that I'm shirtless as we are learning to be stretching.
01:23Yeah, you can't kick someone in the face if you're not flexible enough to do it,
01:27and that is the goal of training, is to kick people in the face.
01:30My main form of working out is rock climbing. That is the fix that I like.
01:38But yeah, I've been climbing since middle school.
01:42I'm not super tall, but my long wingspan does help a lot with climbing.
01:47I don't feel anything when I do the stretch.
01:49I've, to me, the stretch is so fake. It's so placebo.
01:53So, like, how can I actually stretch in my garage if I go like this?
01:55And you.
01:56Something that we do a lot or every time before we start doing crazy kicks or choreo or any type of
02:07workout, which just really helps with flexibility and kicking strength, it's the static endurance
02:14kicking exercises. So what we're going to do is we're going to just do a very slowed down
02:18version of a roundhouse kick. Start here, five seconds. And you hold out. Then you come back.
02:30Then you go down, you get a little bit of a rest.
02:33All right, so, uh, we're going to start with just low kicks.
02:38Training is pretty much whenever we're not shooting.
02:41Um, the vibes on set, everyone knew that it was going to be bittersweet, but it was,
02:49it was fun. And we had a really big priority on making sure we sort of appreciate that it's the
02:56last season and everyone got to hang out a lot. Um, we made that a priority. Yeah, it was just,
03:03it was a, it was a good time. Just getting the focus on being with everybody, act like a family,
03:10you know. All right. And now we're going to be working on body kicks. It's very important.
03:18Lots of good knockouts come from body kicks.
03:22I think one day I will be a UFC champion and I will be knocking lots of people out.
03:27So I got to try and like it now, you know,
03:29who are you going to knock out in the UFC room? Give me a second, give me a second.
03:33Taeda. He's a pretty easy knockout. He's a couple of pounds on me, but I think that's kind of light
03:40work. Um, I love Brandon Moreno. I probably will train with him. He'll probably be my training buddy.
03:47Okay. This high kick, head kick. We don't throw head kicks too much because, uh,
03:53uh, Johnny pulls his groin a lot. So to make him feel bad, you know, all of us will keep our,
04:00our legs a little farther down for him. They always want me to do some crazy 1040,
04:08you know, Superman wild kick that, you know, I have learned how to do flips for this role,
04:17but that is not where I started. I was not a gymnast or, you know, any of this karate stuff.
04:23So a lot of those spinning kicks, I had to learn a kick called a fae long, which it's a 360
04:29crescent kick into a push kick. And it's just, it just requires so much airtime, um, that we didn't
04:37even have like enough time to end up doing. So I learned a cool kick that I'll never be seen, probably.
04:46Uh, right now we're going to be doing the sort of speed round stuff. So normally we'll do is we'll go
04:55low, high or low body low. Um, and you just want to get, do them clean and quick. You know,
05:02you want to have a good rhythm to it. Good rhythm. Good rhythm is best. That's what you want.
05:08Oh man. Muay Thai to me is the most fun. And my character specifically,
05:21I get to throw a lot of elbows. I do a lot of knees and it feels very Hawk, you know,
05:28which they were right. Cause I loved it. And it's been super fun. And
05:33each character feeling very different. And you know, it is a karate show, but you know,
05:41we're throwing Superman punches and you know, elbows and crazy kicks. And you know,
05:47there's a lot of different influences, you know, throughout all the characters.
05:51Yeah. Muay Thai, I think is the most fun. He's like,
05:53what do you even get to do like a Superman elbow on someone? That's sick. I get to do that in season
05:58one right off the rip. Muay Thai, crazy guy. Don't elbows at people. That should be illegal.
06:03I don't know if it is or not, but yeah, the backflips, the flips, um, they all kind of started
06:12where I was just talking with a lot of the stunt guys talking about how I've always wanted to learn
06:16how to flip, but it's just so scary. And John G. Hangir, one of our stunt guys, he plays Rick and
06:21Burger. Um, he's like, dude, I'll teach you to flip right now. Five minutes. Super easy.
06:25He pulled out a little rinky dink mat and was like, all right, just flip. I'll help you get over.
06:29I was like, what? He's like, just do it. Just flip right now. And I was like, ah, you know,
06:33did a horrible flip. As I jumped, he just backs off completely. And it's just, and I realized mid,
06:41I'm like, what the heck? So I'm going up and, uh, I landed my first flip. And since then,
06:47every other sort of trick I've had to do has been a similar version of that, of just, come on,
06:53try it. We'll help you. Okay. He kind of did it. Let's just like fake it. I'll help him this up.
06:58And then they're like, all right, you got it.
06:59And then they're like, all right, you got it.
07:06Whoa.
