00:00At that time, the shepherds hurried to Bethlehem and found Mary,
00:13Joseph and the baby lying in the manger. After seeing him, they told what had happened to them.
00:19That child said it, and all who heard it were amazed. Mary, for her part, kept
00:27He pondered all these things in his heart. The shepherds returned to their fields praising
00:34and glorifying God for all they had seen and heard, according to what had been revealed to them.
00:39announced. When the eight days were completed, they circumcised the child and named him Jesus,
00:47the same one that the angel had spoken of, before the child was conceived.
00:57This week, from the Word of God, the civil year begins with this wonderful feast of
01:10Our Blessed Mother, which, as we have already said, is one of the first Marian feasts that were
01:16It has, because it was quite a problem, it's the first dogma, right? And above all, it's the one he's in.
01:25as Saint Justin and so many others have written, on which the mystery of
01:35A salvific economy. It is from there, from where we can truly be certain that
01:42Jesus is truly human and truly divine; he is the son of God and the son of the Virgin Mary.
01:49This, then, has been a difficult dogma that lasted almost four centuries, until 431, when in Ephesus
01:59They are gathered together to learn about all the heresies that were occurring at that time,
02:08truth, about the reality of Jesus, who Jesus really was, true God, true man,
02:16How did all this fit into the economy of salvation? There were, therefore, many different positions, even...
02:25The Arians, right, who practically divided the church for more than four centuries, right?
02:32Arius said that Jesus was indeed the Christ, and therefore Mary was not.
02:42Mother of God, if not the mother of Christ. And then, well, then, who is Christ?
02:49Yes? Indeed, Christ is who. And well, Saint Cyril in the 4th century wrote a letter that
02:57Then the council will ratify it, and with that it will become completely clear that Jesus is
03:04Truly God, as the dogma states, is without beginning or end. He is consubstantial with the Father of
03:14the same nature of the Father, born before all ages, which later the Council of Chalcedon
03:20He will resume the process to create the creed as we have it today, right?
03:27It is the Onicenian-Constantinopolitan creed, which is the one we recite today, we all recite.
03:34Sundays, but what will all this progress have, but which is already starting to take shape in the 431.
03:41True God, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, who began to exist in human nature from the
03:51Incarnation, but He remains the second person of the Trinity. He is the true God, the creator.
04:01absolutely everything that exists. Of Him, Saint John writes, as in the beginning there was and this Word
04:13who existed with God and was in God's presence, became flesh and dwelt among us.
04:21It is therefore completely clear that what was conceived in the womb of the Virgin Mary is truly God.
04:29second person of the Trinity, the eternal Word with the Father, who from that moment takes on flesh
04:37of the Virgin Mary and becomes a true man and therefore a true son of the Blessed Virgin
04:45Mary. So that in the same way that the Father says to Jesus, son, exactly the same and with
04:54Mary calls Jesus "son" in the same way. And Jesus calls God "father."
05:04eternal with him in eternity, his divine nature, in the same way he calls the Virgin Mary "Mom" in his
05:13Human nature. True God, true man, begotten, not made, who as we say in the
05:20In the creed, which states that for our salvation He was incarnated by the Virgin Mary and began to be man, as Saint Augustine will say
05:29A little later, without ceasing to be what he was, the eternal God with the Father, he began to be what he was not.
05:38man among us and from then on he will always be a man and will always be a son of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
05:46This is a topic that could be discussed at length, but today I would like to focus more on what role
05:54Our Blessed Virgin Mary plays a role in the life of each one of you, in the life of each one of
06:02us. There is a book that my thesis advisor asked me to read when I was studying in Rome.
06:12This book is called Mary the Mother of My Lord, it was written by Max Turian, a Frenchman.
06:31When I read it, this book is a book that has, it's a book that has a lot, a lot of foundation
06:40biblical, and that's precisely why my thesis advisor asked me to read it. I was fascinated, I loved it for what
06:47He spoke of the Virgin Mary, the way he analyzed the different passages in which our
06:54Holy Mother in all the gospels, the mention made later by Luke in the book of Acts
07:01of the apostles and the particularly important passage we have read today from the letter to the Galatians.
07:09To the point that when I read it, I said, this is a priest well versed in the scriptures and that
07:18Furthermore, he loves the Blessed Virgin Mary for everything she says and the way she expresses it.
07:26I kept that idea, I did my work with this book, and so on. Years passed, later on,
07:32When I am already doing my doctorate on Marian topics, then I return to it for my thesis
07:38Reading this book to get some ideas from it. And then, it seems, it already existed.
07:47I went online, and I don't know if it was Google or one of those search engines, right? I started investigating who it was.
07:53Max Turian. I was drawn to his writing style, and what a surprise I'm discovering that
08:00Max Turian was a pastor at an evangelical church. I almost lost my hair.
08:09I was saying, like a Protestant, that you know how Protestants are, because you don't value the Holy Trinity
08:18Virgin Mary. Well, Max Turian discovered the obvious, the correct posture.
08:27Mary within the life of a Christian. Because you say, the mother of my Lord.
08:37If we all truly recognize that Jesus is God, if we recognize that Jesus is the Son of God,
08:46If we acknowledge that thanks to Him, you and I have been saved, we have life, we have it in abundance,
08:52And that thanks to Him, to His sacrifice, to His death, to His resurrection, we will one day share in heaven.
09:00So, we say that Mary is the mother of that man, the one who gave his life for you, she is his mother.
09:10And her mom is just as much of a mom as my mom.
09:13That is why the text, very important, that Sacred Scripture proposes to us today,
09:21It tells us that when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, eternal with Him in eternity,
09:30He sent him to become flesh among us, that is, he says, born under the law,
09:36to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might become children of God,
09:44I will speak of this at the end, so that we might become children of God.
09:49But right now I want to focus our attention on Mary, the mother of my Lord.
09:57What does this tell you?
09:58What is your relationship so far with the mother of your Lord?
10:08Do you honor her?
10:10Do you worship her?
10:12Do you love her?
10:15What are your feelings towards her?
10:20People think this mass is a mass to start the year.
10:23No.
10:24This is a Christian mass.
10:25This is a mass that honors the Blessed Virgin Mary.
10:29Originally this holiday was not on this date.
10:33It has gone through different celebration dates at different times in the history of the church.
10:39Paul VI places it at the beginning of the year to present it to us as a model.
10:45There is already a homily, you can look it up, where I talk about Mary as the model who begins, right?
10:50In other words, when we begin, we present the Virgin Mary at the start of the year so that, following her path, following her example throughout the year,
10:59so that we may participate more fully in the kingdom.
11:02But the festival is Marian, it has nothing to do with the year.
11:08It coincides with all these holidays around the world, right?
11:14Not to say mundane, right?
11:15The world's festivals, which celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of the next...
11:20So, nothing changed from yesterday to today, right?
11:27The streets are just full of firework papers, right?
11:30And there are a few rockets stopped, right?
11:33We hope there weren't too many accidents with the rockets, right?
11:37Especially with those who drive, and with the others too.
11:40Aside from that, what changed today?
11:44It's really just a situation, nothing more to say, a year has already ended.
11:48Well, we could celebrate that it's over for a day, couldn't we?
11:53A month has ended.
11:54And we could have a party, right?
11:56The end of the month, now we start a new month.
11:59And then?
12:03I believe that every day is a time of renewal.
12:06As you can see, I was giving them this, well, this guide to do an analysis that, well, especially the Jesuits
12:13They sought to do that every day; it's called account analysis, right?
12:19Where each night the Jesuit had to ask himself a series of questions like the ones I presented to you
12:25For this year's final exam, then, it had to be done every day.
12:31New day, new life, right?
12:36New week, new life.
12:39New month, new life.
12:41New year, new life.
12:42We say this.
12:43I mean, we kind of saved up a lot until the end of the year.
12:46But it's a normal party.
12:49The feast we are celebrating is that of this lady, who is the mother of my master.
12:54I don't know if she's your master's mother.
12:56Because for this to happen, Jesus has to be someone important in your life.
13:01Because if it isn't, it's not a big deal.
13:05And I'm going to give you a very practical example.
13:09I've mentioned this before, but I'm repeating it today because it's relevant.
13:16Imagine that I go and they invite me to the patron saint festival here, of the Holy Family.
13:25As priests, we invite each other and attend the patron saint festivities.
13:29And well, I tell my mom to come with me.
13:33Because there will be tamales and chiladas and everything.
13:36And I say to her, "Hey Mom, why don't you come?"
13:37Well, when I was alive, right?
13:39Why don't you come here to the party?
13:42And he tells me, no, I am going.
13:43Well, I'll see you there, right?
13:45And I would arrive later, as always happened here in the parish with my brothers or with one of my sisters.
13:50And what do you think was going to happen that day?
13:56Nothing.
13:58He would arrive in a car and park somewhere.
14:01And then, well, I would go in with my sister and she would go in there and sit down somewhere.
14:06Because?
14:07Because I am nothing, and nobody, to the people of that parish.
14:13Ah, but that he shouldn't come here to the parish.
14:19Hermes, etc., right?
14:21I have a photo of us today.
14:23I was with my mom when the tower was inaugurated.
14:30Ma'am, the father's mother is coming.
14:33Father's mother.
14:34And there was the entourage, wasn't there?
14:35All the ladies were there waiting for the father's mother to arrive.
14:40Why come?
14:41And they had already set aside a bench for him, right up front.
14:45And then for the fair, a luxury table.
14:49Because?
14:52This is the father's mother, right?
14:54She is the parish priest's mother.
14:56And I'm just a regular priest, like any other.
15:02But for you, the parish priest.
15:04In the other parish, I am nothing.
15:07Here, for you, that's why I was saying, it depends on who Jesus is for you.
15:11To people from other parishes, I'm just another priest.
15:17But here I am the parish priest.
15:20And then we must honor the parish priest's mother.
15:24Because?
15:24Because then the parish priest, look how he comes in.
15:28TRUE?
15:28How will I feel when they honor my mother?
15:33When they want her, when they give her a good place.
15:37I can see it when I'm celebrating because they put it up here in front.
15:41In the end, everyone comes closer.
15:43Ma'am, how are you?
15:44That's great, isn't it?
15:45And here's who's his son, and this one, and that one.
15:47Some would surely complain, right?
15:50I have no doubt, do I?
15:53But see the idea.
15:56That's why I'm giving you a very practical idea.
16:03We're not talking about the parish priest's mother.
16:08Not even the bishop's mother.
16:12Not even from the Pope.
16:15We are talking about the mother of Jesus Christ.
16:19The Son of God.
16:21He through whom all things were made.
16:23The one who rescued you, who saved you, who forgave you.
16:26We're talking about her.
16:29From that lady's son.
16:32The one you might have tucked away in a drawer.
16:39You honor her.
16:40You sing to him.
16:42You bring her little flowers.
16:46Who is he to you?
16:47And this, almost as Saint Teresa of Jesus would say.
16:57Saint Teresa of Jesus said, I became a nun for convenience.
17:01She says, because she couldn't have found a better husband.
17:06So, for convenience.
17:07She says, right?
17:08I became a nun for convenience.
17:10To have a husband like that.
17:12The Son of God.
17:13That's my husband.
17:20You?
17:22Well, for convenience, right?
17:24And that convenience gradually develops into love.
17:31Since I was little, well, by some divine initiative, because in the house we did pray the rosary from time to time.
17:40It was not a reality that everyone prayed, especially those who were already older.
17:46My parents prayed for them every night.
17:48I would often find them praying the rosary.
17:51But it wasn't a normal practice in my house.
17:53I learned to pray the rosary when I started going on missions.
17:58Nothing else.
18:00But little by little, due to some situation that I don't quite understand, but which I believe has been a privilege from God,
18:06calling me to get to know His Blessed Mother better.
18:10And little by little this theme of convenience, perhaps, or love, began to develop.
18:17So when I was in Rome, well, always, once a week,
18:27Well, right there in front of the Mexican school where we were staying, they were selling flowers.
18:31So every Saturday, every week, I would go and buy her a small bouquet of flowers.
18:37to put it on the Virgin that was there in the chapel.
18:44When I arrived here at this parish, you will remember that where our Blessed Mother is now,
18:52There was the Christ that is now back there.
18:54And you will remember a small Virgin Mary, about this size, which is now in the Maria Reina Hall.
19:03And that's great, we use it when we go to neighborhood masses and all that, that very beautiful figure of the Immaculate Conception is still there.
19:10When I arrived, I said, no, well here my mother has to be up front,
19:14Well, how am I going to have it back there?
19:15No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, we're going to put it here.
19:20And then, do you remember the little pedestal we use now at Christmas to put the baby Jesus on?
19:26Well, we put that little pedestal there and that's where the Virgin stood.
19:33Then, thanks to God and some generous people, we were able to buy the image that is always there now.
19:40You always see at important parties, to stand out, some image is displayed.
19:47This is the Theotokos.
19:48So, that's why we put the Theotokos there.
19:52But the Virgin we have, the Immaculate Conception we have, is a Spanish Virgin.
19:57We had it brought directly from Spain.
20:03And we had his pedestal made of marble this time, right?
20:06So that it's there.
20:08Because that is their place in the church.
20:10Just as Pope Paul VI placed the Blessed Virgin Mary at the forefront of our beginning of the year,
20:19That's why I wanted her to be here, so you could see her, so you could get to know her, so you could learn to honor her.
20:26And that's why she always has flowers.
20:31Because we can't give him any more.
20:33But always have flowers.
20:36And more flowers.
20:37How many flowers would we have to put there for the mother of our Lord?
20:42In other words, when one understands what we're talking about, the mother of my Lord,
20:50You say, "Oh, Carlitos!"
20:53In other words, not even the entire flower shop there would give this woman the minimum honor she deserves.
20:58No, forget about being immaculate, forget about being assumed, forget about being a saint, forget about whatever you want.
21:06Whatever it might have been.
21:11She is the mother of the Lord.
21:16It's enough to fill her with flowers, compliments, love, affection, and attention.
21:23Because she is the mother of my Lord, nothing more.
21:25Now, if you add to that the fact that she is a saint, that she is immaculate, that she was assumed into heaven,
21:31And she's also your mom, because that's what Jesus says, right?
21:39They will recall John 19, chapter 19, verses 25 through 27,
21:46where he tells her, "There's your mother."
21:49And he says it to the disciple, he says it to us, she is your mother.
21:52And the father of pottery says, in an excellent book also called
21:56Mary in the mystery of the covenant, says that quote is from a scholar,
22:01A very good Bible scholar says that this phrase could be translated as follows:
22:07And from that moment on, John, the disciple, took her to his home.
22:13And it says, it can be translated, and she considered it something valuable, the most valuable thing in her house.
22:22He took his master's mother into his home.
22:27How would you take care of your best friend's mom?
22:33How would you take care of her?
22:35From your best friend, from your brother, with whom you would give your life.
22:42How would you take care of her?
22:42What do we give, what do we put on, what do we do for my best friend's mother?
22:52Now, that best friend even gave his life for me, he loved me.
22:57And he loved me so much that he gave himself up for me, Saint Paul was going to say.
23:01Oh Carlitos, there's nothing I wouldn't do for her, nothing I wouldn't give my all for.
23:11The mother of my lord.
23:13And you, and we brothers, in the 21st century, what are we doing for Mary?
23:22How do we honor her?
23:26That's why, that's why our country is the way it is.
23:30We do not honor Mary, we only go to see her when we are really stuck in traffic.
23:39Non feci talliter omni nations.
23:42I have not done anything similar with any other nation.
23:45He came to visit us.
23:47Our mother, the mother of heaven.
23:49"I am not here, I who am your mother," Juan Diego tells her.
23:51You are not, perhaps, in the lap of my hands, in the hollow of my hands.
24:00Wow, that's crazy, brothers.
24:02We as Mexicans also have that blessing, that grace, that wonderful gift from God.
24:10But forget about that too if you want.
24:13The mother of my lord.
24:17I'm going to read you a text so you can also see what we're talking about.
24:21If you bring your Bibles, I want you to see Solomon's attitude.
24:301 Kings, chapter 2, verse 19.
24:37David is dead, Solomon has taken the kingdom.
24:43Chapter 2, verse 19.
24:57Bathsheba, well, she's Solomon's mother, okay?
25:00It says that Bathsheba entered King Solomon's room to intercede for Adonijah.
25:10The king got up and went out to meet him.
25:15He bowed to her and focused on the throne, having an armchair placed for his mother.
25:21And Bathsheba sat at his right hand.
25:24The king gets up and bows down before her.
25:32It's her mother.
25:34The king, he is the king.
25:37He is the king.
25:38That's why there's nothing he denies his Blessed Mother, as we see in the passage from John, in chapter 2, right?
25:54The wedding at Cana.
25:56So Maria doesn't even have to beg him, or say anything to him, right?
26:01Son, they have no wine.
26:08Jesus says, well, let them go and buy some, right?
26:11So what?
26:12What is our problem?
26:14They don't have wine.
26:16AND?
26:17Well, it doesn't say that, does it?
26:21But you could, it's a free interpretation in the Mexican style, right?
26:25The gringos would say, sojuac.
26:32And Maria, do what I tell you, okay?
26:40And he left.
26:43He didn't say, "My son, look, please, lend them a hand, look, I know you can, right?"
26:50Mary, my mother, my time has not yet come.
26:53And then, that's your problem.
26:59It doesn't say that either, does it?
27:04But that's how it's interpreted.
27:09Jesus has just told him that his time has not yet come.
27:13And excuse me for what I'm about to say, but Maria couldn't care less about that.
27:17Whether or not Jesus' time has come, well that's another matter, isn't it?
27:22These people need your help.
27:25And Mary knows who He is.
27:32Do as I say.
27:35And he leaves.
27:37The church has considered Mary to be the treasurer of graces, that is, that she distributes them.
27:46I don't completely agree with this idea, but I'm grateful.
27:54But I am absolutely convinced that she has many graces that, if they do not go through her, will not be granted.
28:10That's how I think, right?
28:11That's my opinion.
28:13I think it's Christ's way of honoring his mother.
28:18Mother, here you have this, give it to whomever you want.
28:23These are yours.
28:24Give them to whomever you want.
28:26Son, her son gave them to her.
28:28Mary herself can do nothing, she is not God, she does not produce graces, she can administer them.
28:36Because I think God said to her, "Mommy, here."
28:40For your favorites.
28:50For those who bring you little flowers, for those who sing to you, for those who build you a basilica, for your favorites, here.
29:01Divide them yourself.
29:02I'll take care of the others too.
29:04Maria has a power, brothers, that only when you know it, when you experience it, then you realize who that lady standing there really is.
29:18She is none other than, brothers, the mother of our Lord.
29:23Mary, the mother of God, the Theotokos.
29:27The Mother of God.
29:29Oh, Carlitos, good heavens.
29:34Do you understand the Mother of God?
29:40She is not Juan Pérez's mother, nor Father Ernesto's.
29:44No, she is the mother of the God for whom we live.
29:49She is the mother of the God who created everything that exists.
29:53She is the mother of the God who rescued you.
29:57It's that lady over there.
29:59What space does it have in your life, in your heart, in your thoughts, in your theology, in your life?
30:14Poor Protestant brothers.
30:19Max Turian was almost kicked out of his congregation.
30:23He was a pastor.
30:23From there he became associated with Tessé, which is a community in France, it is an ecumenical community.
30:33And so he is now associated with that community.
30:37He remains a Protestant.
30:40There are some things about the Virgin Mary that she does not fully recognize, such as the topic of intercession.
30:45He doesn't recognize it, although he reveals many things there, all mixed up.
30:51He's still him, he's still him, a Protestant.
30:56But he took a giant step.
30:59And it almost cost him his job.
31:05Poor Protestants.
31:06Well, I tell you that the Protestant dies twice.
31:09The first one, his first death will happen, well, I don't know, when he gets liver disease, gets cancer, something, he's going to die of something.
31:19And the second one is heart-stopping.
31:22When he gets to heaven and sees Mary sitting there, the poor guy is going to have a heart attack.
31:28He's going to say, "But how stupid I was."
31:31How could I not honor her? How could I not venerate her?
31:34Everything the Catholic Church said was true.
31:37And we fell short.
31:40Because of the mystery of Mary, when I start my class at the seminary, I tell them, brothers, take off your shoes.
31:48Because we are about to enter unfathomable territory.
31:51We are going to enter into one of the greatest, most beautiful and profound mysteries that God has wanted us to know.
31:59And in which we can move forward.
32:01Her name is Mary of Nazareth.
32:04Thus progress is made in a mystery that is never fully developed because she is the mother of the Lord.
32:14And that's all that explodes in my head when I say she's the mother of God.
32:22I can't understand it.
32:25But it gives me ideas and makes me enter into a different relationship with her.
32:30At the beginning of this year, brothers, I would like to add to everything I have proposed to you since last year,
32:38to reflect on how our personal life is going, our relationship with our family, our relationship with God,
32:45that we think these days, how is our relationship with Mary.
32:49What does your heart feel when you talk about her, when you see her?
33:03You have images in your house, you honor them, you bring them little flowers, you teach them to your children.
33:09And they ask you, God, what is Mary to you?
33:14Because your salvation probably doesn't depend on this, but your happiness does.
33:21Yes, thank you very much, you will surely be able to meet and see it, and it will make your entire existence in this world much richer and much more beautiful.
33:32To not know Maria is to lose the support and help of a wonderful mother, of infinite tenderness.
33:42of a comfort like no one else can give us, of companionship, of guidance,
33:48That's why Jesus left her to us, so that like a good mother, holding our hands, she can lead us to heaven.
33:55Give Mary a special place in your heart and you will see that the kingdom of heaven draws near.
34:01and very visible to each of us.
34:05Praise be to Jesus Christ.
