00:00The Lamentations of Jeremiah
00:02How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people?
00:08How is she become as a widow, she that was great among the nations, and princess among
00:14the provinces?
00:16How is she become tributary?
00:18She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks.
00:23Among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her.
00:28All her friends have dealt treacherously with her.
00:31They are become her enemies.
00:34Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction and because of great servitude.
00:40She dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest.
00:44All her persecutors overtook her between the straits.
00:48The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the solemn feasts.
00:53All her gates are desolate.
00:55Her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.
01:02Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper.
01:06For the Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions.
01:10Her children are gone into captivity before the enemy.
01:15And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed.
01:18Her princes are become like hearts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer.
01:28Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries
01:33All her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and none did help her.
01:42The adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths.
01:46Jerusalem hath grievously sinned, therefore she is removed.
01:51All that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness.
01:57Yea, she sieth, and turneth backward.
02:00Her filthiness is in her skirts.
02:03She remembereth not her last end.
02:06Therefore she came down wonderfully.
02:09She had no comforter.
02:10O Lord, behold my affliction.
02:14For the enemy hath magnified himself.
02:17The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things.
02:22For she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary.
02:26Whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.
02:31All her people sigh.
02:34They seek bread.
02:35They have given their pleasant things for meat to relieve the soul.
02:39See, O Lord, and consider.
02:43For I am become vile.
02:45Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by?
02:49Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me.
02:55Wherewith the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
02:59From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them.
03:05He hath spread a net for my feet.
03:07He hath turned me back.
03:10He hath made me desolate and faint all the day.
03:14The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand.
03:18They are wreathed and come up upon my neck.
03:21He hath made my strength to fall.
03:23The Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
03:30The Lord hath trodden underfoot all my mighty men in the midst of me.
03:36He hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men.
03:40The Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress.
03:47For these things I weep.
03:49Mine eye, my eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me.
03:58My children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.
04:01Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to comfort her.
04:07The Lord hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him.
04:14Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them.
04:18The Lord is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment.
04:22Here, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow.
04:27My virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.
04:32I called for my lovers, but they deceived me.
04:35My priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city,
04:40while they sought their meat to relieve their souls.
04:43Behold, O Lord, for I am in distress.
04:47My bowels are troubled.
04:49Mine heart is turned within me,
04:51for I have grievously rebelled.
04:54Abroad the sword bereaveth.
04:56At home there is as death.
04:59They have heard that I sigh.
05:01There is none to comfort me.
05:04All mine enemies have heard of my trouble.
05:07They are glad that thou hast done it.
05:10Thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called,
05:13and they shall be like unto me.
05:15Let all their wickedness come before thee,
05:18and do unto them as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions.
05:24For my sighs are many, and my heart is faint.
05:28Chapter 2
05:29How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger,
05:36and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel,
05:41and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger?
05:45The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob,
05:49and hath not pitied.
05:50He hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah.
05:57He hath brought them down to the ground.
06:00He hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
06:05He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel.
06:10He hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy,
06:13and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire,
06:18which devoureth round about.
06:20He hath bent his bow like an enemy.
06:23He stood with his right hand as an adversary,
06:27and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion.
06:33He poured out his fury like fire.
06:36The Lord was as an enemy.
06:38He hath swallowed up Israel.
06:40He hath swallowed up all her palaces.
06:44He hath destroyed his strong holds,
06:46and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.
06:51And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle,
06:55as if it were of a garden.
06:57He hath destroyed his places of the assembly.
07:01The Lord hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion,
07:05and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.
07:11The Lord hath cast off his altar.
07:14He hath abhorred his sanctuary.
07:16He hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces.
07:21They have made a noise in the house of the Lord,
07:24as in the day of a solemn feast.
07:27The Lord hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion.
07:32He hath stretched out a line.
07:35He hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying.
07:39Therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament.
07:43They languish together.
07:45Her gates are sunk into the ground.
07:48He hath destroyed and broken her bars.
07:51Her king and her princes are among the Gentiles.
07:54The law is no more.
07:57Her prophets also find no vision from the Lord.
08:02The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and keep silence.
08:07They have cast up dust upon their heads.
08:10They have girded themselves with sackcloth.
08:13The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.
08:18Mine eyes do fail with tears.
08:21My bowels are troubled.
08:22My liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
08:29Because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.
08:33They say to their mothers.
08:36Where is corn and wine?
08:38When they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city.
08:42When their soul was poured out into their mother's bosom.
08:47What thing shall I take to witness for thee?
08:50What thing shall I liken to thee?
08:52O daughter of Jerusalem.
08:55What shall I equal to thee?
08:57That I may comfort thee.
08:59O virgin daughter of Zion.
09:02For thy breach is great like the sea.
09:06Who can heal thee?
09:08Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee.
09:12And they have not discovered thine iniquity.
09:15To turn away thy captivity.
09:17But I have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.
09:23All that pass by clap their hands at thee.
09:26They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem.
09:30Saying,
09:31Is this the city that men call the perfection of beauty?
09:36The joy of the whole earth?
09:38All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee.
09:42They hiss and gnash the teeth.
09:46They say,
09:46We have swallowed her up.
09:48Certainly this is the day that we looked for.
09:52We have found.
09:53We have seen it.
09:55The Lord hath done that which he had devised.
09:59He hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old.
10:03He hath thrown down and hath not pitied.
10:07And he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee.
10:11He hath set up the horn of thine adversaries.
10:14Their heart cried unto the Lord,
10:16O wall of the daughter of Zion.
10:19Let tears run down like a river day and night.
10:23Give thyself no rest.
10:25Let not the apple of thine eye cease.
10:28Arise.
10:29Cry out in the night.
10:31In the beginning of the watches,
10:33Pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord.
10:37Lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children,
10:42That faint for hunger in the top of every street.
10:46Behold, O Lord,
10:47And consider to whom thou hast done this.
10:51Shall the women eat their fruit,
10:53And the children of a span long?
10:56Shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?
11:00The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets.
11:06My virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword.
11:10Thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger.
11:14Thou hast killed and not pitied.
11:17Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about,
11:21So that in the day of the Lord's anger none escaped nor remained.
11:25Those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.
11:31Chapter 3
11:32I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
11:38He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light.
11:44Surely against me is he turned.
11:46He turneth his hand against me all the day.
11:49My flesh and my skin hath he made old.
11:52He hath broken my bones.
11:54He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail.
11:59He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.
12:04He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out.
12:07He hath made my chain heavy.
12:10Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
12:14He hath enclosed my ways with hewn stone.
12:18He hath made my paths crooked.
12:19He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
12:26He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces.
12:30He hath made me desolate.
12:33He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
12:37He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
12:41I was a derision to all my people, and their song all the day.
12:47He hath filled me with bitterness.
12:50He hath made me drunken with wormwood.
12:53He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones.
12:56He hath covered me with ashes.
12:58And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace.
13:02I forgot prosperity.
13:04And I said, my strength and my hope is perished from the Lord.
13:09Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.
13:14My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
13:19This I recall to my mind.
13:22Therefore have I hope.
13:23It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
13:30They are new every morning.
13:32Great is thy faithfulness.
13:34The Lord is my portion, saith my soul.
13:37Therefore will I hope in him.
13:40The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him.
13:46It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.
13:51It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
13:56He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.
14:02He potteth his mouth in the dust.
14:04If so be, there may be hope.
14:07He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him.
14:11He is filled full with reproach.
14:14For the Lord will not cast off for ever.
14:16But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his
14:23mercies.
14:24For he doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men, to crush under his feet
14:31all the prisoners of the earth, to turn aside the right of a man before the face of the Most
14:38High, to subvert a man in his cause.
14:41The Lord approveth not.
14:45Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
14:51Out of the mouth of the Most High proceedeth not evil and good.
14:56Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
15:01Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the Lord.
15:07Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
15:12We have transgressed and have rebelled.
15:15Thou hast not pardoned.
15:17Thou hast covered with anger and persecuted us.
15:21Thou hast slain.
15:23Thou hast not pitied.
15:26Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
15:31Thou hast made us as the off-scouring, and refuse in the midst of the people.
15:38All our enemies have opened their mouths against us.
15:42Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction.
15:48Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
15:53Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission, till the Lord look down, and behold from heaven.
16:04Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city.
16:09Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird without cause.
16:13They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
16:19Waters flowed over mine head.
16:22Then I said,
16:23I am cut off.
16:26I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
16:30Thou hast heard my voice.
16:32Hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
16:36Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee.
16:39Thou saidst, fear not.
16:42O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul.
16:45Thou hast redeemed my life.
16:48O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong.
16:51Judge thou my cause.
16:53Thou hast seen all their vengeance, and all their imaginations against me.
16:58Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me.
17:03The lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day.
17:10Behold their sitting down, and their rising up.
17:14I am their music.
17:16Render unto them a recompense, O Lord, according to the work of their hands.
17:22Give them sorrow of heart.
17:25Thy curse unto them.
17:27Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the Lord.
17:33Chapter 4
17:34How is the gold become dim?
17:39How is the most fine gold changed?
17:42The stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street.
17:47The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold,
17:51How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter?
17:57Even the sea monsters draw out the breast.
17:59They give suck to their young ones.
18:02The daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.
18:08The tongue of the suckling child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst.
18:12The young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.
18:17They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets.
18:21They that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.
18:25For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of Sodom,
18:32That was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
18:37Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk,
18:42They were more ruddy and body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire.
18:48Their visage is blacker than a coal, they are not known in the streets,
18:52Their skin cleaveth to their bones, it is withered, it is become like a stick.
18:58They that be slain with a sword are better than they that be slain with hunger,
19:04For these pine away, stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
19:09The hands of the pitiful woman have soddened their own children,
19:14They were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.
19:18The Lord hath accomplished his fury, he hath poured out his fierce anger,
19:22And hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof.
19:27The kings of the earth and all the inhabitants of the world
19:31Would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy
19:35Should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
19:38For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests,
19:42That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,
19:45They have wandered as blind men in the streets,
19:48They have polluted themselves with blood,
19:50So that men could not touch their garments.
19:53They cried unto them, Depart ye, it is unclean,
19:58Depart, depart, touch not.
20:00When they fled away and wandered,
20:02They said among the heathen,
20:04They shall no more sojourn there.
20:07The anger of the Lord hath divided them.
20:11He will no more regard them,
20:14They respected not the persons of the priests,
20:16They favoured not the elders.
20:18As for us, our eyes as yet failed for our vain help,
20:23In our watching we have watched for a nation
20:25That could not save us.
20:27They hunt our steps that we cannot go in our streets,
20:31Our end is near, our days are fulfilled,
20:35For our end is come.
20:38Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven,
20:41They pursued us upon the mountains,
20:43They laid wait for us in the wilderness.
20:46The breath of our nostrils,
20:48The anointed of the Lord,
20:50Was taken in their pits,
20:52Of whom we said,
20:54Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen.
20:57Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
21:00That dwellest in the land of Uz.
21:03The cup also shall pass through unto thee,
21:06Thou shalt be drunken,
21:08And shalt make thyself naked.
21:10The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished,
21:13O daughter of Zion.
21:14He will no more carry thee away into captivity.
21:17He will visit thine iniquity,
21:19O daughter of Edom.
21:21He will discover thy sins.
21:25Chapter 5
21:26Remember, O Lord, what has come upon us.
21:30Consider and behold our reproach.
21:33Our inheritance is turned to strangers,
21:36Our houses to aliens.
21:37We are orphans and fatherless.
21:41Our mothers are as widows.
21:43We have drunken our water for money.
21:45Our wood is sold unto us.
21:48Our necks are under persecution.
21:50We labor and have no rest.
21:53We have given the hand to the Egyptians,
21:56And to the Assyrians to be satisfied with bread.
22:01Our fathers have sinned and are not,
22:03And we have borne their iniquities.
22:05Servants have ruled over us.
22:08There is none that doth deliver us out of their hand.
22:11We gat our bread with the peril of our lives
22:14Because of the sword of the wilderness.
22:16Our skin was black like an oven
22:19Because of the terrible famine.
22:21They ravished the women in Zion,
22:23And the maids in the cities of Judah.
22:26Princes are hanged up by their hand.
22:28The faces of elders were not honored.
22:31They took the young men to grind,
22:33And the children fell under the wood.
22:37The elders have ceased from the gate,
22:39The young men from their music.
22:41The joy of our heart is ceased.
22:44Our dance is turned into mourning.
22:46The crown is fallen from our head.
22:48Woe unto us that we have sinned.
22:52For this our heart is faint.
22:54For these things our eyes are dim.
22:57Because of the mountain of Zion which is desolate,
23:00The foxes walk upon it.
23:02Thou, O Lord, remainest forever,
23:05Thy throne from generation to generation.
23:08Wherefore dost thou forget us forever,
23:11And forsake us so long time?
23:14Turn thou us unto thee, O Lord,
23:17And we shall be turned.
23:19Renew our days as of old.
23:22But thou hast utterly rejected us.
23:24Thou art very wroth against us.
