00:00Would be used to militarize the streets of an American city is an abomination.
00:09Founding fathers did not live and die to see that happen in this country for no reason whatsoever than vanity, theater, to instill fear, to incite a response.
00:26So I'm very hopeful this order puts that in perspective and hopefully Donald Trump will immediately back down.
00:37The courts have ruled on the guard.
00:40They will be back under my command and he'll be relieved.
00:44Donald Trump will be relieved of his command at noon tomorrow.
00:49The president and secretary will honor this order.
00:56And then you've also mentioned that you have tried to work with the president in the past.
01:01Has this situation changed your dynamic?
01:03No, because I will work with anyone to advance the interests of 40 million Americans that I happen to represent here in California.
01:13And so I've always maintained an open hand, not a closed fist, but I also am going to stand firm and tall and push back against lawlessness.
01:23Against someone that does not believe in the rule of law, does not believe in constraints, does not believe in the Constitution,
01:30who is threatening judges, that threatens not to abide by orders and Donald Trump better abide by these orders.
01:37Or we have a constitutional crisis, likes of which we haven't seen in our lifetime.
01:46Well, that will be determined by fate and future, but also fundamentally by whatever decision he makes.
01:54That's how things break down.
01:56It's a federal judge with a federal order, period, full stop.
02:04It's the rule of law.
02:06It's the foundational principles of a constitutional democracy.
02:12He must work under the constraints as a constitutional officer of the Constitution of the United States of America.
02:20That's what this court order demands of the President of the United States.
02:26He is not a monarch, he is not a king, and he should stop acting like one.
02:30Governor, when is the last time you spoke to the President?
02:32I spoke to him on Friday night.
02:35He had a mysterious conversation with me three days later.
02:39You can't even make this stuff up.
02:41Oh, I would love to share the readout, but I revere the Office of Presidency, so I'll keep it in confidence.
02:54He is quite literally made up components of that conversation.
02:59He's been a stone-cold liar about what he said we talked about.
03:05He never discussed the National Guard, period, full stop.
03:07I would love to share with you what he actually talked about.
03:11It would send shivers up your spine.
03:13Attorneys for the government, though, today things imply that that Friday call,
03:17that you might have been aware that this was coming, or can you believe,
03:23can you confirm whether or not you knew that this was coming, this order was coming?
03:27Of course not. No, absolutely not.
03:29We were back and forth with Susie Wiles as Chief of Staff.
03:32I then called the mayor of Los Angeles, saw a missed call from the president, called him back.
03:38I actually texted him back, you want full disclosure, and he called me right back.
03:42We discussed for a nanosecond Los Angeles, and he immediately zigged and zagged into seven or eight other topics,
03:49some extraordinarily familiar and some extraordinarily remarkable, considering the world we're living in.
03:56So how did you find out?
03:58I learned about it when I saw some tweet about Governor Nuscombe, a nickname, by the way, that's hardly original.
04:07There was an eighth grader on Baltimore Street in Corte Madera that used to call me that,
04:14and the reference to the National Guard being commandeered in that same tweet.
04:20That's how I learned about it.
04:21Governor, are you confident in this ruling will stand on appeal, especially if it gets to the Supreme Court?
04:25Well, I'm confident in the rule of law.
04:26I'm confident in the Constitution of the United States.
04:28I'm confident in the wisdom and judgment of a very well-respected federal judge,
04:36and I'm confident on the basis of the review of the 36 pages, absolutely it will stand.
04:42Governor, does this order go even further than you expected?
04:45I think your attorneys had asked for them to simply be restricted to federal buildings.
04:49We, I'll just say, we're extraordinarily pleased by the 36-page ruling of Justice Breyer.
04:55Can you speak to some of the journalists who have been, about some of the journalists in L.A. who have been hit with rubber bullets?
05:01Well, there's two investigations, the one we initiated with the California Highway Patrol,
05:07and there's one that has been initiated independent by the LAPD.
05:12And people should feel safe.
05:14Reporters absolutely should feel safe.
05:17And we'll get to the bottom of it.
05:19I don't want to prejudge, but I'm concerned about them.
05:22That's why we advanced the investigations.
05:24Governor, today in San Francisco, immigration attorneys tell us that there were three additional folks who were detained
05:30while heading into the ICE courts offices.
05:33And some, this is some of just many detentions we've seen at courthouses and immigration offices in the Bay Area around the state.
05:42And many of these people, their attorneys are telling us they've complicated technical cases.
05:46What are your thoughts about seeing these detentions occurring in your communities around California?
05:52Well, he's on, he's on, let's just dispense.
05:55This is not about criminals.
05:57If it's about criminals, got no beef with me.
06:03We want to secure our border.
06:05We need comprehensive immigration reform.
06:07We need a pathway to citizenship for people being there 10, 15, 20 years contributing, paying their taxes,
06:14being remarkable members of our community.
06:16But that's not what this is about.
06:18I was in Oxnard, California, Ventura County yesterday, met with three people, three people directly impacted by indiscriminate raids.
06:28I met a 12-year-old boy in sixth grade, weeping, crying, tears pouring down his face.
06:37His mother and father were both detained.
06:41They disappeared.
06:41He has no brothers, no sisters, no family.
06:45He quite literally is on his own abandoned.
06:50That's Donald Trump's America.
06:5220-plus years his mom and dad working in the same fields, doing the same packing and shipping.
06:5920-plus years they've disappeared.
07:0312-year-old boy.
07:04You saw the images of ICE officers running through strawberry fields, CBP, helicopters, above.
07:12I met a woman, a single mother, who was walking out at 5.45 a.m. to get in her car.
07:19Seven agents surrounded her.
07:21They took her in a car, in essence kidnapping her, driving her around for almost two hours
07:28until she finally convinced the agent, because she has three young children, a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old, and an 8-year-old,
07:35that they needed to get to school, and there's no one to help them get to school.
07:39She was finally allowed to call her oldest daughter, who was interrogated by the agent and threatened.
07:46And they threatened her after they dropped her off, said, we may be back.
07:50Terrorizing this single mother.
07:53No criminal record, no criminal background.
07:55I met another young woman whose husband has quite literally disappeared.
08:01No criminal record.
08:02She doesn't know what to do.
08:03She doesn't even know what happened.
08:05That was just yesterday.
08:06That's Donald Trump's America.
08:11Agricultural workers.
08:12Think about that when you have dinner tonight.
08:15Think about what, when you enjoy your first course.
08:17Have some fresh fruit, some fresh vegetables.
08:20Who provided those?
08:22Who supported you in that?
08:23Think about it when you go home and the construction around your property.
08:27Or maybe you're getting a remodel.
08:28Who's doing that work?
08:31Destroying not only the foundations of our democracy, the best, again, of the Roman Republic, the Greek democracy,
08:36but now our economy is at risk because of the recklessness and the cruelty of Donald Trump,
08:44the indiscriminate cruelty of Donald Trump.
08:48Why else do you go to a 7-Eleven?
08:51Why else do you go to a nail salon?
08:53Why else do you just randomly show up in front of a hardware store?
08:57Why else?
08:59It's not about criminals.
09:00That's about creating chaos.
09:04And I do not believe the American people, the majority of the American people, support that.
09:09Quite the contrary.
09:11And so this decision was important because it's about constraints.
09:15It's about limits.
09:17It's about our democracy.
09:18And that's why we're very grateful by the order.
09:23Thank you, Madam President.
09:24Do you understand if President Trump does not abide by the order?
09:27I think the courts will.
09:29I think that's...
09:29Look, I'm counting on these separations of power.
09:33It's the co-equal branches of government.
09:37Co-equal, Mr. President, branches of government.
09:40He's eliminated one, or they eliminated it themselves.
09:43That's called Congress, Speaker Johnson, who his eloquence was elevated when he called
09:50to, quote-unquote, tar and feather, the governor of California.
09:53That's the speaker.
09:55Very religious.
09:57I guess that's the spirit.
10:01The word of the Lord.
10:06He's abdicated any oversight and responsibility over the president of the United States.
10:11There's one branch remaining, and that's the judicial branch.
10:15So my response to you is we count on the judicial branch.
10:19But there's also, as I said, I ended that speech 48 hours ago.
10:24I said there's the most important office, and that's the office of citizens.
10:26That's all of you.
10:28Stepping up, stepping in, and sharing your passion with action.
10:34Pushing back against this peacefully.
10:37Peacefully.
10:39And sharing your voice.
10:40And I think, this weekend, there will be millions and millions of Americans rightfully expressing
10:47their outrage, their constitutionally protected right to assemble and free speech peacefully
10:54expressing that all across this country.
10:57I pray that's the case.
10:58Governor, I know you said that you don't want to talk about the conversation you had with
11:02the president, but are there any details that you can tell us?
11:05No, not at this moment.
11:07Governor, what is the president today coming out and saying he wants to protect California
11:11farm workers from deportation?
11:13This is what he does.
11:14This is what he does.
11:15He creates a problem, and then he tries to be a hero in his own Marvel movie.
11:19And then he tries to do a make-believe as if you're all perfect little sheep, and you're going
11:35to go on with it to be the hero in his own Marvel movie.
11:39He initiated those raids.
11:43He significantly increased the scale and scope of those raids.
11:48That's why he wants the National Guard.
11:52Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of guardsmen and women now being dispersed everywhere, sprinter
11:57vans, unmarked, people with masks running in, rolling over, in some case running into cars.
12:06Six-month-old kid, a three-year-old child in the back of the car, left.
12:13So, spare me, Mr. President, that he's sincere on that.
12:21But if he is, that happened because of you.
12:24If it happened because of the American people, because they stood up.
12:28And that should give us some optimism.
12:29Thank you all very, very much.
