00:00from a young age i was obsessed with morticia and gomez and the best romance yeah because it was
00:07old school it was hopeless and true devotion obsession literally till death do we part yeah
00:13but even after that like yeah but it had this like murderous streak to it where it was like
00:19i might kill you at any moment because i love you so i mean that maybe that's really toxic i
00:24shouldn't say that love cat it's great to meet you you too thanks for the chat and thanks for
00:27headlining the independent stage at montreal jazz festival thanks i can't wait i can't believe
00:32we're here yeah how is 2025 treating you so far it's it's hard to express really in words what
00:40it's been like it's been truly wild um it began last year i think from around april time it just
00:50became this like unstoppable train that's been hurtling along and i've just been going along
00:56with the ride and was this like a single release you feel like kind of sparked that i just think
01:01it was a video of of us playing in the pub and then ever since that day life's been different
01:06yeah and it's exciting today because you just announced your debut album yes which is brilliant
01:12can you tell me a little bit about that so what's the title it's called vicious delicious amazing and
01:17it's coming out on halloween perfect timing it's very fitting it's coming out on halloween and
01:24yeah it's been made kind of accidentally in the past six months did you find you were just kind
01:31of inspired and you've just been writing while you're on the road um i think i already had loads
01:35of the songs and i just realized that i didn't want to do an ep i didn't want to do a mixtape
01:41as soon as i put the first single out i realized that i wanted even that to be on the on my first
01:47album because it all felt part of the story this was matador yeah first single which yeah that was
01:52kind of like hearing that for the first time i think immediately gave such a sense of like who
01:56you are as an artist like it was so fully formed which i think is really impressive i think for a debut
02:01artist thank you it was it's just funny isn't it because i think it's unusual to maybe do it that way
02:08where where you release singles and then we just accidentally became part of a long album campaign
02:16because i made this decision where i was like no eps let's just go full like let's make a proper
02:22statement and have it all part of the bigger story yeah and like i think you know so much of your
02:28songwriting seems steeped in this kind of very like surreal cinematic kind of universe and i know like
02:32there's you know rumors of running away to the circus and something to do with the ringleader
02:37which is brilliant and i think you know like storytelling i'm generalizing now but i think
02:45it's kind of lacking in a lot of contemporary pop music like do you kind of feel like that and is
02:49that kind of does that in a way kind of spur you on to kind of really have a proper narrative running
02:54through yeah i mean i don't listen to a lot of new music really um but i've grown up with my dad's
03:02record collection which was some of the best storytellers we've we've got um but they're all
03:09slightly unhinged and so who are we thinking like well i guess definitely the cure were were
03:17my first main memory as a as a very young child of being taken to a cure gig and realizing i was by
03:23far the youngest kid and being really proud of that um and then the smiths and nick cave
03:30and then through my dad's kind of male dark storytelling storytelling influences i then
03:37myself discovered tom waits and leonard cohen who i i would say i would cite them as my main influences
03:43like you're saying tom waits and leonard cohen and you know again just i think those artists like
03:48all definitely there's a through line of setting the scene and really kind of like allowing you to
03:53kind of sink into again like the narrative the storytelling of it um and i think songs you know
03:58like dinner at brasseries adele like you just have such a vivid image of what's going on even without
04:02seeing like a music video or anything so you talk about that song a little bit just like how you came
04:07up with that um well when i first moved to london and discovered soho and then brasseries adele itself
04:17and just really wishing that the kind of scallywag musicians that i was in love with would take me
04:26there on a fancy white tablecloth date you know um it was kind of tongue in cheek i was just sitting
04:33at my i got this old piano for 50 quid off gumtree which i somehow got into my camberwell garden flat
04:41and it had little candlesticks on the front of it no it didn't it had like globe lamps on it i haven't
04:47got it anymore because i couldn't get it i've moved and i couldn't get up the stairs very sad
04:51heartbreak yeah heartbreak yeah but it was a great part of my life for two years and it had these like
04:57old electric lamps in the front of it and i would sit there and like three in the morning
05:01and i just started writing this um cheeky like hey baby when are you gonna take you know um
05:09it started off as kind of just a joke and then when i got home to liverpool one day i was back at the
05:16piano and i thought it was actually really cool and i carried on writing it and it then it then i went
05:20to see tom my guitarist in manchester and i it was a piano ballad really and then i was like i really want
05:27to do a tom weighty industrial sounding drums on this and make it sound a little bit more yeah it's
05:33that big kind of like bombastic yeah like the drums coming in and it's brass yeah and yeah we just as
05:40soon as we we made it and they had like the shipping container it was this tiny little room
05:45i fell in love with it and it felt really like it really sonically felt like the direction that i wanted
05:53to go in and um a lot of the characters in your songs often you know they're not like kind of
06:01straightforward i think a lot of them like matador you've got like this toxic lover and then you know
06:06dinner as brass readers as you were saying you're sort of like this kind of coquettish like playful
06:11kind of tone and do you feel like you know i think as listeners like arguably we more drawn to
06:16like the kind of doomed romance as much as we are like the happily ever afters
06:20yeah i think so i i think you know from a young age i was obsessed with morticia and gomez
06:29and the best romance yeah because it was old school it was hopeless and true devotion obsession
06:37literally till death do we part yeah but even after that like yeah but it had this like murderous
06:44streak to it where it was like i might kill you at any moment because i love you so i mean that
06:48maybe that's really toxic i shouldn't say that i don't mean it like that i just mean it's depicted
06:53in the film it's so much fun and yeah it's playful and it's intense and passionate and i feel like
07:00i love that kind of surrender in a love song which i maybe i wasn't hearing as much of you know
07:07yeah um so on the album is it basically we're going to hear like the singles that you've put out
07:12so far so we've had matador dinner at brasserie's adele he's my man which kind of blew up in a big
07:19way as well he's yeah that had to go on there for me because without that song i just don't think i'd
07:25be sitting here you know it really blew the doors off everything for me and introduced me to all the
07:30people that i'm working with now and um it was a song that everyone kind of ignored and thought it
07:36was just the b-side but i knew in my heart that it was gonna that it was i knew how it made me feel
07:43singing it on stage and that's got to stand for some that's got to mean something you know it just
07:48always had this yearning it that i mean yearning i think it just is everywhere it's like if people
07:54were just very obsessed i think with the idea of wanting something that you can't necessarily have
07:59and like the tension yeah and i think that is definitely something that i feel like is present in
08:04most of your songs yeah thank you and and to answer your question all the singles are going on the
08:11album right um and there's 13 tracks 12 significant yeah it's my lucky number and yeah i always dream
08:22dreamed all my favorite albums growing up like the black parade was my you know it was the album that
08:29got me through like even from being pre-adolescent but it was like the seminal album that was on
08:36every day in the car me discovering like the first record i bought hmv was that um i think that came
08:43out on the 30th of october so i've kind of followed suit there with the i think that was a time like
08:49because from that kind of same time i think of music it was like that and panic at the disco and fall
08:53out boy and i think part of the reason that kind of music i mean personally like appeals so much is
08:58because it kind of provides this like catharsis of you know you you have an avenue through which to
09:03be dramatic and you know i think as a society i feel like we're so constrained a lot of the time
09:08and we're not we're like we're discouraged from like strong displays of emotion especially as women
09:13so yeah i just think let it all out and be bratty and wild and embrace all of the chaos and internal
09:23explosions that happen as a woman yeah absolutely i think that's something like he's my man while
09:34being quite a sort of you know it's held back in terms of like vocally it's very subtle but you can
09:40hear like the the energy i think kind of simmering under the surface and like there's like a kind of
09:45deadliness to it which i really like thank you yeah so it's amazing and i can see why like it's
09:51you know obviously you knew but it's interesting like maybe not everyone kind of picks up on that
09:55but again like these generations of younger women who connect so well with these songs and like there's
10:00a reason for that well what was really cool about that song is that what blew up on the internet was
10:05the chorus which was not really dark or murderous it was quite romantic but everyone still sensed that
10:13there was more to the story and then there was that kind of twist of like you know the reveal
10:17almost yeah that it was about a slow poisoning and a really really fucked up relationship um and it was
10:25inspired by a real life kind of ghost story that happened in my family and i think it was cool to
10:32see how people just by hearing the melody maybe and the the just the inner tension within the song
10:38like yeah picked up on that not everything is as it seems yeah yeah amazing um fantastic and i guess
10:45so you're finishing up summer tour festivals and then you're off to you've got a bit of a break
10:51and then you're off to north america is that right yeah so we do i'm sorry being on the spot
10:57we do 35 festivals this summer we're about halfway through i'd say nearly and then
11:03we have album time which is around the autumn and then straight away after it comes out we do uk
11:11europe and north america album tour yeah album tour wow which is totally like i can't even get my head
