00:00And a new study shows that although a sizable conservative minority is angry,
00:04the majority of the Brazilian population supports the guilty verdict issued against former President Bolsonaro this week.
00:10Our correspondent, Brian Muir, has more.
00:13Across the country, Brazilians are applauding the Supreme Court's conviction of Jair Bolsonaro
00:19and seven of his accomplices for crimes that include a failed attempt to enact a military coup,
00:24which would have effectively ended the period of democracy that began with the fall of the U.S.-backed dictatorship in 1985.
00:33The ruling makes us happy, not because of hatred or a thirst for revenge,
00:39but because it represents a defense of Brazil's democracy.
00:43Those who lived through the military dictatorship and saw to the torture and killings of those who tried to resist it,
00:50understand what I am talking about.
00:51After the guilty verdicts were announced,
00:54many people commemorated the fact that five high-ranking members of the armed forces have been convicted.
01:00This is the first time since the first military coup in 1891
01:04that a member of the Brazilian armed forces has ever been convicted for involvement in a coup.
01:09We believe that it's a fair verdict,
01:12because they attempted a coup d'etat.
01:14And beyond that,
01:16it represents a historical rectification for great injustice that has happened in Brazil,
01:22including all of the people who were murdered,
01:26fighting against the military coup of 1964,
01:30and the dictatorship that followed.
01:33It's symbolically important
01:35to now have army generals convicted of a coup attempt.
01:39Although a sizable minority of Brazilian conservatives seem furious with ex-president Bolsonaro's 27-year prison sentence,
01:47a study by the Eurasia Group shows that the majority of the population supports the verdict.
01:53They need to lock Bolsonaro up and throw the key in the river because that man is good for nothing.
01:58He told poor people to eat grass.
02:00He didn't help the people in any way.
02:02He didn't keep any of his promises.
02:04According to Brazil's legal protocols,
02:09ex-president Bolsonaro and his cronies are expected to be arrested sometime within the next 60 days.
