00:00We go now to Argentina. In a new important setback for Millet's government, the lower
00:06chamber of the Congress has just overruled his last two presidential vetos on key financing
00:12for education and health care. With 181 affirmative votes, the deputies' chamber rejected Millet's
00:19veto to the pediatric emergency law, and with 174 votes, they achieved the same result regarding
00:26the law that secured more funds for higher education. Both vetos now go to the Senate where
00:32the final voting will take place, and the result is a hard blow to the Libertarian government
00:38that piles up legislative and electoral losses weeks before the midterm legislative elections
00:44in the country.
00:53We go now to live images at this moment, right outside the Congress in Buenos Aires, where
01:01the lower chamber has just reacted Millet's two vetos. University students, teachers and
01:08also workers are holding a massive march at this hour against the austerity policies of
01:14President Javier Millet as also a way to pressure the legislative power to follow the people's
01:20mandate called for by the Argentine University Federation, also the Trade Union Front and the National
01:28Inter-University Council. The demonstration has brought together key affected sectors in a
01:34joint move to recessed government cuts.
01:43Let's find out more on these key laws that President Millet had vetoed and also the lower chamber
01:50of Congress has just upheld. The university financing law that had been approved by the Senate on
01:56August 22nd, 2025 was vetoed by the President on September 10th. The law intends to progressively
02:04increase the university budget from 1 percent of GDP in 2026 to 1.5 percent in 2031. The objective
02:13is to increase funding for public universities, adjust the teaching and non-teaching salaries in line with
02:20inflation, also update operating expenses. In addition, the law would provide funds for infrastructure,
02:28scholarships and academic activities. The last chance for the university financing law depends on the two
02:35chambers of Congress which could overturn the presidential veto with a two-thirds majority vote from those present.
