00:00Has the Netherlands banned Antifa?
00:06Pôs circulando online
00:08are alleging that the Dutch government
00:09has banned Antifa.
00:11This umbrella term,
00:12which is short for anti-fascist,
00:14designates loosely affiliated
00:16far-left activists,
00:17as well as groups that oppose
00:19fascism and neo-Nazism.
00:21Antifa is more of an ideology
00:23than an actual organisation,
00:25although some of its supporters
00:26have embraced militant tactics.
00:28Following the assassination
00:29of right-wing activist
00:30and Trump supporter Charlie Kirk,
00:33the US president said
00:34he would designate Antifa
00:35as a major terrorist organisation
00:38as part of his efforts
00:39to target the radical left.
00:41We have seen a rise in violence
00:43perpetuated by Antifa radical people
00:48across this country
00:49who subscribe to this group.
00:51No links between the suspect,
00:52Tyler Robinson,
00:53and any other left-wing groups,
00:55including Antifa,
00:56have been uncovered to date.
00:58However, following Trump's declarations,
01:00Hungary followed suit,
01:01announcing that it would also ban Antifa
01:03and urging the EU to do the same,
01:06as detailed in a letter
01:07addressed to the European Union's
01:09foreign policy chief,
01:11Kaja Kallas.
01:12As for the Netherlands,
01:13online users are also claiming
01:15that the country's government
01:16has banned Antifa.
01:17Now, according to the Dutch parliament's website,
01:20a motion on labelling Antifa
01:22as a terrorist organisation
01:23in the Netherlands was passed
01:25on the 18th of September,
01:27with 76 out of 150 votes.
01:30However, motions are just recommendations
01:33rather than legally binding decisions.
01:35Although parliament can submit motions,
01:38the Netherlands government
01:39is not obliged to carry them out
01:41unless they are a motion of no confidence.
