PEOPLE THINK I'M A MAN WHEN THEY HEAR MY VOICE
WITH VID AND PIX
By Hannah Hodgetts and Kiara Wells
A woman with an unusually deep voice has revealed that people constantly mistake her for a man.
Abigail Virginia, 24, from Nashville, Tennessee, USA, has gone viral for her naturally deep voice, which often leaves people stunned when they hear her speak or sing.
The musician explained that she’s often called ‘sir’ in drive-thru's and on the phone, and has to raise her pitch in order to stop being mistaken.
She said: “Advantages of having a deep voice as a female - people almost have to listen to you because the tonality in your voice is so distinct and it makes people listen.
“There's just something about it.”
She told how deep tone has even caused confusion on television as after performing on a national singing show, many viewers assumed she was a man.
Despite the occasional mix-up, she’s also learned to see it as a strength.
The unique tone leaves listeners engaged and can even scare unwanted people away.
She added: “If you need to scare away a scary man, you can make your voice even deeper and be like, ‘bro, get out the way’ and really scare them.
“Those are some advantages.
“I started to talk to them and they're like, ‘I did not expect that to come out of your little body’.”

00:00If you need to scare away a scary man, you can make your voice even deeper and be like,
00:04yo bro, get out of the way, and really scare them.
00:06So I have a deep voice as a female, and I have an even deeper singing voice.
00:10So I'm going to be hitting like some popular low note songs.
00:14The first thing I'm going to do is Hello by Del.
00:17Hello, it's me.
00:19I was wondering, it says to all these kids you f***ed.
00:24You know, I'll always be jealous of the girls that just wake up, and they're just killing it.
00:30And then I wake up and I sound like I smoke 20 packs a day.
00:34I just have a really deep voice, and if I get sick at all, I sound like your brother.
00:41I don't know what else to say.
00:44The places I get called to God because of my voice.
00:46The first one is always the drive-thru.
00:47Like every time I go through the drive-thru, they're like, pull around, sir.
00:51Sir, I am not a sir.
00:52And the second one is over the phone, especially when I used to be in sales, and I'd be like, hey.
00:58And they're like, hey, man.
00:59Try and pitch my voice up again.
01:01Hey, actually, this is a girl.
01:03Anyway.
01:03And then lastly, online, of course.
01:06Especially when I went on national television for a singing show.
01:10I sang House of the Rising Sun, and everyone thought I was a dude.
01:12They're like, there's no way she could be hitting those notes as a female.
01:16Advantages of having a deep voice as a female.
01:18People almost have to listen to you because of the tonality in your voice is so distinct.
01:22And it carries.
01:23It makes people listen.
01:25There's just something about it.
01:26Also, with the tonality of your voice, it can be calming.
01:30And if used correctly, you can really touch someone with encouragement and just like words of wisdom.
01:35Because I just think there's something like soothing about a deep voice and calming.
01:38And it could really help people.
01:40Also think that if you need to scare away a scary man, you can like make your voice even deeper.
01:45And be like, yo bro, like get out the way.
01:47And really scare them.
01:49So, those are some advantages.
01:51So, I have a deep voice and these are things that people say to me when they hear me speak.
01:55You know, I start to talk to them and they're like, well, I did not expect that to come out of your little body.
02:00Sometimes I'll also be talking to someone new and they're like, yo, are you like sick?
02:04No, no, I just woke up.
02:06I think they also are confused by the accent because I'm from Alabama.
02:10If you didn't know that.
02:11And they're like, where are you from?
02:13Alabama.
02:14Roll Tide.
02:15They also ask if I'm in like broadcasting.
02:18And I'm like, no, but I would love that.
02:19That'd be so fun.
