En 1939 à Londres, Ian Fleming mène une vie de playboy. Mais ses frasques cachent une fêlure secrète : il possède un complexe d'infériorité par rapport à son père défunt, héros de guerre, et son frère Peter, célèbre aventurier écrivain. Usant de son charme auprès des femmes, Ian Flemming aime échafauder des stratégies pour obtenir de nouvelles conquêtes. Alors qu'il a pour cible Ann O'Neill, une femme mariée ayant aussi un amant, la déclaration de guerre le surprend. Tandis que Ian Fleming se console avec la jeune Muriel, il se met au service d'un amiral de l'espionnage maritime. Son insubordination, son goût du mensonge et du risque s'avèrent utiles...
