00:00Baby, I'm playing on you tonight, hunt you down, eat you alive, just like animals, animals.
00:08Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're looking at our picks for some pretty disgusting pop song lyrics.
00:14You better run for your life if you can, little girl. Hide your head in the side, little girl.
00:19We won't be including tracks with dark themes that are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.
00:25The Heart Part 6, Drake.
00:27One of the biggest feuds in recent rap history has been between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
00:32Tensions reached their peak during mid-2024, with the pair releasing diss tracks back and forth.
00:38Lamar pulled no punches, accusing Drake of being a predator.
00:46The response Drake gave failed to paint himself in a positive light, featuring especially painful lyrics.
00:53One of the worst was his saying,
00:57Whether you believe the accusations or not, this response implies he was anticipating being called out for such behavior.
01:07The song was so negatively received, Lamar stopped responding, proving he came out on top.
01:13To any that talk to him and they're in love, just make sure you have your little sister from him.
01:18He hit me and it felt like a kiss.
01:20The Crystals.
01:21He hit me.
01:24And it felt like a kiss.
01:28This track was first performed by The Crystals in 1962,
01:32but was originally penned by Carole King and Jerry Goffin.
01:36It was inspired by a traumatic experience of their friend, little Ava Boyd.
01:41She was frequently being physically abused by her partner.
01:44When asked why she put up with it, Ava told them he did it because he loved her.
01:48He hit me.
01:52And I knew he loved me.
01:56They then wrote this song about abusive relationships with positive intentions.
02:00But it didn't feel that way on account of Bill Spector's production.
02:12The Crystals felt uncomfortable recording it, with Spector asking them to give a sincere performance.
02:18Well, in the 2000s, Spector was convicted of murder,
02:21revealing this song was hinting towards a dark side of his personality.
02:24He made me go.
02:30Blurred Lines.
02:32Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell Williams.
02:38This track used to get decent radio play back in 2013.
02:42It's got a catchy beat and a great vocal performance by Pharrell.
02:46Well, when you start listening to the lyrics, the song becomes far less appealing.
02:50They're beyond disgusting,
02:51with Thicke singing about pressuring a woman into being intimate with him,
02:55even though she said no.
03:00It's one of the most misogynistic and creepy tracks of the century so far.
03:07Years later, Pharrell said he was, quote,
03:09embarrassed at being involved in the tune.
03:12You wanna hug me?
03:14What rhymes with hug me?
03:17Even if he didn't initially understand the controversy,
03:20and Thicke's popularity has plummeted since.
03:24Delilah.
03:24Tom Jones.
03:25You'd be forgiven for not realizing this power ballad is incredibly dark
03:29if you've never paid attention to the lyrics.
03:31I, my, my, Delilah.
03:37They're actually about a man who realizes his girlfriend is cheating on him.
03:40He waits outside her house at night until he sees her lover leave.
03:44In the morning, he approaches her.
03:46But when she laughs at his remorse, he murders her.
03:49Many find it an uncomfortable song to listen to,
03:56as it feels like it's glorifying violence against women.
04:00This led to a controversy in Welsh rugby,
04:02as players and fans became fond of the track.
04:04Why, why, why, why, why, Chelsea?
04:18Eventually, it was banned by the Welsh rugby union in 2015.
04:22Animals.
04:23Maroon 5.
04:24Baby, I'm playing on you tonight.
04:27Hunt you down, eat your life.
04:29Just like animals, animals.
04:32This song was released in 2014 and peaked at number 3 on America's Billboard Hot 100.
04:38Lyrically, it's about a breakup, described using animal metaphors.
04:42The chorus is loaded with exceedingly creepy lyrics.
04:52It doesn't help that the music video was horrific.
04:55It focuses on vocalist Adam Levine stalking a woman, but in a way that many believe glorifies it.
05:01It was criticized for making such behavior feel edgy, but Levine disagreed.
05:06He said such critiques were, quote,
05:08and compared the video to a horror film.
05:19Usually, the villains in horror films aren't trying to look as cool as Levine does here,
05:23posing with his muscles while covered in gratuitous blood.
05:27Run for your life, The Beatles.
05:29This is another song with a deceptively upbeat instrumental.
05:41The lyrics are some of the darkest from the band's entire discography.
05:45Fans will be unsurprised to hear that it was mainly written by John Lennon.
05:49It's about someone in a horrible relationship,
05:51who threatens to murder his partner if she cheats on him.
05:54Run for your life if you can, little girl.
05:56Hide your head in the side, little girl.
05:59Catch you with another man, that's the end.
06:03In 1973, Lennon admitted it was one of his least favorite songs from the band's discography.
06:08George Harrison, on the other hand, loved it for some obscure reason.
06:12Baby, I'm determined and I'd rather see you dead.
06:17You better run for your life if you can, little girl.
06:20Fans and critics generally consider it the lowest point on Rubber Soul,
06:24which is an otherwise outstanding album.
06:27Do What You Want, Lady Gaga featuring R. Kelly.
06:30This song was released as the second single for Lady Gaga's 2013 album, Art Pop.
06:35The original version has since been removed from streaming services,
06:45not only because it features R. Kelly, but because of the lyrical content.
06:49You won't say what you want about me
06:51If you're wondering of that, I'm not sorry
06:53Do what you want, what you want, my body
06:56The meaning is intended to be Gaga saying her inner thoughts are hers alone,
07:00uninfluenced by other people's opinions.
07:02Unfortunately, R. Kelly turned out to be an extremely abusive individual.
07:07This led Gaga to replace the track with a version featuring Christina Aguilera instead.
07:12Do what you want with my body
07:13Do what you want with my body
07:16A video was also produced, which makes Kelly look beyond creepy,
07:21but this was never officially released.
07:23Getting Better
07:24The Beatles
07:25Despite being one of the greatest bands of all time,
07:28the Beatles weren't perfect, as we've already seen.
07:31Another example of why comes from this one line in Getting Better.
07:35To admit it's getting better
07:37A little better
07:39All the time
07:41This track from Sgt. Pepper's sounds optimistic,
07:45as its lyrics are about improving yourself and your life.
07:48Unfortunately, there's one especially cursed John Lennon lyric we struggle with.
07:53This is when he sings about how he used to abuse his partner, but has since stopped.
07:57I used to be cruel to my woman
08:00I beat her and kept
08:01They're apart from the things that she loved
08:05On the one hand, we're glad he realized the error of his ways,
08:08then corrected his behavior.
08:10Still, it's a topic that feels out of place for such a cheery, easygoing instrumental.
08:14I know what it's mean, but I'm changing my scene
08:18And I'm doing the best that I can
08:21Timber
08:23Pitbull featuring Kesha
08:25Few tracks bring back the 2013 nostalgia like this anthem
08:30It's got a dancey and memorable beat,
08:41But unfortunately, Pitbull finishes his first verse with a diabolical lyric
08:45The song's basically about an out-of-control party
08:49This line from Pitbull shows he fails to understand consent
08:52And stains the track's reputation significantly
08:55It's just one of many examples of Pitbull being extremely sexist in his lyrics
09:06Outside of this singular line, there's nothing else that sticks out as being quite as problematic
09:11It's unfortunate, as this song is likely in most people's 2010s nostalgia playlists
09:16Lemon Incest
09:40This French pop song easily has some of the most uncomfortable lyrics in music history
09:56It was recorded by Serge and his daughter Charlotte, who was a teenager at the time
10:01The pair of them both deny it's a track about an inappropriate relationship
10:06Despite it being in the title
10:08Also, the music video features the pair wearing little clothing in bed together
10:20It didn't help that Serge kissed his daughter on the lips in 1986 after she won an award
10:26Even as an adult, Charlotte has defended it and still plays it on tour
10:31That doesn't make it any less unsettling to us, though
10:34Which of these heinous song lyrics do you think is the worst?
