Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar says she is not going to war with Venezuela, but she is duty bound to protect the people of T&T, if something were to happen.

That’s why she says, our relationship with the United States is very important as they are T&T’s best defence against any potential attack from Venezuela.

She spoke with members of the media following a toy distribution event in her constituency of Siparia last evening.

Reporter Cindy Raghubar-Teekersingh tells us more.

00:00I am not going to war with Venezuela, but I have a duty to protect the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
00:07And at this time, this is the best defense mechanism that we can have, to have a nation that is strong in their military, strong in their equipment, strong in their marine assets, electronic assets, and all of those they are assisting us.
00:22Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissessa says she is taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of TNT, and that involves working closely with the United States.
00:34We are taking every precaution. Each day I walk out on the street, I take a precaution. I take precautions for my nation and for the people of my country.
00:41And those precautions include having the bilateral relationships with the United States. They include the partnerships we are engaged in.
00:49The United States has helped us with military forces here, not to launch an attack, but for defense. The radar is also for defense.
00:58She also responded to more threats from the Venezuelan justice minister targeting TNT for its relationship with the U.S. amid its Caribbean Sea buildup of assets.
01:09Which other country can defend this? Should Venezuela do as that man has been threatening for months now to attack TNT?
01:18He says it's me. But when they attack me, it means they attack every one of us because they cannot zero in on you alone.
01:23Well, it's not the first time he's made that threat. I think he needs to train his guns and his radar on Trump because the warships out in the waters are the United States.
01:32They belong to Trump. Let him train his radar on them and I wish him a very merry Christmas.
