00:00A proposal to formally impeach President Lai Qingde reaches the legislature floor and opposition
00:05lawmakers push it through.
00:07The move to impeach Lai and Taiwan Premier Zhu Rongtai started shortly after Zhuo blocked
00:26a local government funding bill from taking effect.
00:29Meanwhile, Taiwan People's Party Chair and Lawmaker Huang Guocang says Zhuo and Lai's actions
00:58are unacceptable.

01:37Arguments between the opposition and the ruling party go well beyond this impeachment proposal.
01:42They now involve multiple branches of government, including the judiciary, causing governance
01:47to grind nearly to a halt.
01:50And with less than a week until the new year, the legislature has yet to review or discuss
01:54next year's general budget, or a separate $40 billion US dollar defense budget proposed
01:59by Lai.
02:00Much of that money would go toward purchasing arms from the United States.
02:04Delays in that funding could see Washington lose patience with Taiwan.
02:09But one analyst says that infighting may not be a bad thing as it will ultimately force
02:13the two sides to negotiate, including on foreign matters.
02:17I think there are a lot of things the government can do to help convince, making the opposite,
02:23convince the society and then make the opposition have no way to oppose the budget.
02:32With the two sides of Taiwan's political aisle unwilling to budge, it may be sometime before
02:36the current impasse is resolved.
