00:00The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, tours through Sudan,
00:05meeting families displaced by the ongoing conflict.
00:08It's his first official visit since November 2022,
00:11as fighting between rival forces continue to devastate large parts of the country,
00:16especially in Darfur and Kordofan.
00:19Turk says he's been deeply shocked by the harrowing stories shared by survivors.
00:22I met nine women and girls, all of them survivors of sexual violence,
00:27and they told me horrific stories.
00:31They were, I've never seen so traumatized individuals.
00:36What they told me was about a gang rape in Al-Fashir.
00:40When they tried to flee, they told me about the men being taken out and killed in front of them,
00:46their brothers, their sons.
00:49Since the conflict began, the UN has documented widespread sexual violence used as a weapon of war,
00:54including rape, abduction and sexual slavery,
00:58often targeting victims based on ethnicity or perceived allegiance.
