00:00Yesterday this news came out I think right after you guys got off the air that the Texans were actually
00:05making some coaching changes and when people heard that news they probably got excited until they saw
00:10wait a minute it's tight end coach Jake Moreland and assistant linebacker coach Ben Boland
00:15and offensive assistant Mike Snyder big whoop those that was the big news
00:20I guess the the one little titillation I get from this is I'm always curious when
00:25somebody gets fired that you're not necessarily all that conscious over think all that much about
00:30there's a reason that maybe you're not all that conscious of them the players aren't
00:35gushing about them or anything like that but B it also might be that D'Amico's
00:40got somebody else lined up or in mind somebody one of the hard things about hiring a system
00:45coaches is that the vast majority of guys that you really want are under contract
00:50you know so when a bunch of head coaches get fired in a particular
00:55season all of a sudden boom there might be some really good assistant coaches on those staffs
01:00and D'Amico might be interested in one of them as a tight ends coach or what have you so it's not even necessarily
01:05a an indictment on Jake Moreland the tight ends coach as much as all right there's this guy that I
01:10know I like or especially Nick Caley is a former tight ends coach himself
01:15might have somebody that he really likes and he thinks can bring something more to the table so
01:20I think that ideally what I would hope is that hey Dalton Schultz had a good year looked a lot
01:25more like the version of himself from two years ago and maybe there's somebody that they're
01:30about to hire that could do even more for the tight ends especially Cade Stover and
01:35bringing him along in his development yeah because I was surprised I thought if you were going to move on from
01:40anybody I actually thought like the tight ends he had injuries this past year and I thought Dalton
01:45Dalton Schultz took a big step forward I almost feel bad for Jake because I thought maybe he was the one guy that
01:50that uh earned another opportunity there on that offensive side of things for the Texans yeah there is that
01:55part of it if you think if you're from Moreland perspective like all right well our second
02:00third best tight ends both started off the season on IR you're giving me this rotation
02:05of various guys you picked up off the scrap heap and and Blake Fisher
02:10to play at tight end and uh Dalton Schultz still ended up having a really productive year
02:15I think that uh so there's they're like what am I getting fired for man yeah
02:20I think Cade Stover's development might be a big part of it and Cade's
02:25coming off of injury midway through the season so obviously he had a setback I was hoping to see
02:30Cade Stover be a bigger and more impactful part of the offense and uh
02:35and and maybe there's an avenue to get there with a better assistant coach yeah so do you think
02:40this does change things do you think this has a big impact
02:45on the offense do you think like the Texans fans should wake up this morning thinking like okay here we go
02:50we got things figured out now like how big of an impact do you think these moves will actually make no no I think these are all on
02:55the margin it's not like how many coaches did Aaron Glenn fire he was yeah seven
03:00right yeah so Aaron Glenn's doing a complete swap out and I don't
03:05know if Jets fans get excited about anything anymore Jets fans and Cleveland fans tend to be pretty dead inside
03:10when it comes potential improvements coming up of a bad year you know what though I'll give it to Jets
03:15Jets fans though they do get pretty riled up uh when they when they drafted Sam Darnold uh
03:20that was you couldn't shut him up that was because man look at his pro day
03:25is just you're gonna watch you're gonna watch Sam Darnold's pro day and tell me that this guy isn't gonna be a future all pro
03:30for another team after having played for five other teams yeah
03:35yeah I I think at that point you know eight years ago I feel like at least the Jets fans that I have
03:40in my life have been beaten down in recent years I don't really hear a word from them anymore these last couple years
03:45it's gotten so embarrassing but in general yeah you know when I saw this news yesterday it almost
03:50felt like to me just doing something for the sake of doing something like almost giving in
03:55to the pitchforks but not actually making a real change uh what I put in our
04:00our uh google doc was like it felt like when blockbuster was a sinking ship and then they announced like
04:05hey you know what to save the company we're going to get rid of late fees no more late fees that's going to save
04:10us and it was like that's the big change like there's netflix they're streaming and you think late fees is going
04:15to save you it almost feels like just doing something for the sake of doing something but it's not really anything I honestly
04:20though it's based on Casario's press conference alone
04:25they are thinking that for one not having Joe Mixon hurt
04:30but then most importantly I mean Casario at least five different times
04:35in that press conference pointed to the basically said we lost that game because of turnover
04:40that Patriots game because of turnovers and CJ Stroud is obviously the
04:45biggest uh he committed the most crimes in that regard um and that you know he's
04:50said it's a quarterback's job to mitigate risk
04:52i he did all but blamed that loss on CJ
04:55and I don't think that that's I don't think Casario thinks that's the only
05:00reason and that you can't improve I think and Casario did not acknowledge this
05:05I think that yeah they could have done more to improve the offense in the offseason I think
05:10the offensive line improved but they weren't as good as they need to be and
05:15that's like there's a big difference between because D'Amico said the same thing hey that the offensive line improved
05:20this year that's great but they weren't they weren't good enough like there still needs to be more improved
05:25I think some of that comes on the personnel side I think that by and large they look at the way the offense
05:30performed in figure all right they've improved on a lot of the nuts and bolts
05:35some of the fundamental things with Nick Caley as the offensive coordinator some of the things that can be improved
05:40on the periphery whether it's position coaches or the actual players themselves
05:45and you know getting a running back in who doesn't have a mysterious lower leg injury
05:50I think that's the that's the change I was looking for I wasn't really eager for or demanding
05:55any kind of wholesale changes in the coaching staff I think it's a matter of actual talent on the field
06:00interesting somebody did say that in the text line as well just saying we need players with a bunch of exclamation points
06:05yeah kind of blaming that more than anything on the coaching side of things yeah I think it was just and look
06:10it's the old uh was it parcells whoever said if you start thinking or acting like a fan you're going to start sitting with
06:15them so I know you can't make decisions based off of the fan base
06:20even what we're saying here on the radio as intelligent as it might be but it just felt
06:25like with the way things ended and the way things have gone offensively and then you see what's going on in the rest
06:30of the AFC or the rest of the NFL it just felt like at least from a Texans fan you wanted something
06:35you wanted them to give you something to feel good about or just like I said a change for the sake of change
06:40change and then it uh you know just felt a little lackluster yeah I gotta know and I guess I could you'd have to
06:45gauge I didn't sense a whole lot of pitchforking over Nick Caley himself
06:50maybe I'm wrong maybe I didn't read that right I really look I mean there when it comes down
06:55to it it a third offensive coordinator for the same quarterback
07:00it if you've ever to fire Nick Caley or move on at some point you're gonna
07:05run out of people to hire to work with your young quarterback if you're not saying that the quarterback himself doesn't
07:10need to make some improvements and then I'll and look and also because I don't I'm trying to be as
07:15you know level-headed as CJ about CJ as possible he's still a young quarterback would CJ
07:20have looked better with a better offensive line and with a better you know all
07:25purpose running back to work alongside Woody Marks he would have would that have been good enough I don't know
07:30um and like CJ still has improving to do but you also can't you can't just
07:35completely detach CJ from the circumstances he didn't handle bad
07:40circumstances all that well in the playoffs uh but he he could have handled them better
07:45at least if he wasn't getting pressure up the gut from the interior offensive line and I am with you on
07:50Caley I think your pot committed I don't want more to turn over at that position for the young quarterback like you said
07:55so I I would keep Caley as well honestly what I all I've wanted for the text
08:00is to bring in like a better um a senior offensive assistant coach
08:05I don't think Bill Lazor is the guy I didn't think he was a great offensive coordinator he was here with Bob
08:10I would bring someone in kind of like Aaron Glenn with the Jets who tried to bring in John Gruden
08:15and now seem to be bringing in Frank Reich like get somebody with some experience that can help Caley out
08:20in the process yeah they've I mean they have those veteran guys and like I think laser
08:25laser is interesting because he's super intelligent yeah he's been an offensive coordinator in a few different spots
08:30and none of them were ideal but I think that sometimes there's a lot of value in having those guys who
08:35weren't necessarily huge big names or huge big egos because those guys can throw as much of a
08:40wrench into it as because it's kind of like when uh Parcells went into
08:45that management role in Miami yeah the guy the guy can't help himself and
08:50he starts you know it turns into it turns into at some point with guys like
08:55that you know what I really need to take this thing over anyway and then it ends up just being a
09:00disaster I I you know what the biggest one that people bring this up a lot and I wonder
09:05I wonder I wonder how much it it could be true is that boy CJ when
09:10he was at his most promising had case Keenum in the quarterback room and that's where I
09:15feel like from the very beginning with CJ they had a rookie center snap in the
09:20ball to a rookie quarterback with a rookie offensive coordinator back coordinator in 2023
09:25the one guy with a whole lot of NFL veteran experience as a quarterback was Kate
09:30Keenum and he was in that room and those little things I mean that's why the Falcons had Matt
09:35Schaub on the roster even though even though they already had a veteran quarterback like it was
09:40Schaub knew that system so well and hearing it from hearing it from
09:45from a veteran quarterback and discussing it with him is always going to be different than
09:50working with the coach and maybe that's the offseason move that could have the biggest impact
09:55is if they go off and get another veteran kind of an old head to have in the room
10:00and and and and be more of a guy light for CJ right one of those player coaches hey Joe
10:05is a free agent just saying uh by the way we're so close to being the
10:10rounds go in and trade for Shadour and we'll then we'll have everything we ever
10:15wanted yeah Pro Bowl quarterback right there uh uh one listener said I'm a
10:20officially over the Texans losing and I'm officially back lol I don't know if that's the coaching changes or just
10:25time and then uh another texter said heard Tanner Engstrom who was just fired from the jet
10:30was the tight end coach in Detroit as well as the passing game coordinator maybe can help with similarities between
10:35Stroud and Goff so maybe their name to keep uh in mind there for the tight end coaching and passing game court
10:40coordinator
