00:00I think the work that I'm doing is good.
00:05I'm proud of that.
00:07So, I'll celebrate that.
00:09You know, I think that's...
00:14My name is Scottie Beam, co-host of State of the Culture, and I feel seen.
00:22My definition of being seen is feeling accepted and appreciated
00:29and I guess also seeing myself.
00:33I think I haven't seen that either.
00:35I don't really know what visually, like, what people see.
00:40I still haven't really necessarily seen me yet.
00:43What happens when you're drunk and raped and nobody believes you
00:46because you were under the influence?
00:48It's a problem. It's a problem.
00:49It's a problem.
00:50No, it's a problem.
00:51You don't think about that with other people, other women.
00:54I understand now that I'm on this platform, State of the Culture,
00:57you know, and I know exactly what my purpose is on State of the Culture,
01:03is to speak for women like me, and I think that's been my only focus,
01:08actually, when it comes to State of the Culture,
01:10to make sure that women like me, not necessarily all women,
01:14but I'm saying women like me, are understood at least or heard.
01:18In this generation, one thing is just not good enough.
01:20You have to continue, and in the world of Instagram,
01:23you have to continue to succeed.
01:26And the moment you get quiet, you're quiet.
01:29This is when I was on set and we were debating.
01:31I don't know what exactly I was talking about,
01:34but the caption reads,
01:36I heard this is bigger than just me.
01:38That first line in the caption was super important to write
01:43because so many people had told me, like,
01:47Dionne, this is bigger than you now.
01:50Black girls are seeing, you know what I'm saying,
01:52like, a woman speak about the importance of blackness
01:56and black womanhood.
01:57Like, it's something that is huge, and now you have a responsibility.
02:02This is bigger than me.
02:04I know that there will be other women and other girls
02:07that will be looking at this to want to sit in the same spot
02:10that I'm sitting and do it, and I support it, and I want it,
02:14and I want more of it.
02:15You know what I'm saying?
02:16So, actually, that's when I started to appreciate where I am.
02:20Like, and actually, you know, love it and be like,
02:23okay, well, I have to make this something,
02:27I have to make this something that is, like, impactful,
02:31especially for us.
02:33I'm very, like, I don't know, I'm shocked
02:36because I never knew that there were so many people that would hate
02:41me supporting or embracing black women.
02:44Boy, do I get mad when women like Dionne Wilkes come in and say,
02:48oh, everything is fine, but I don't see why she's being judged.
02:51You don't?
02:52Why? But why? For what?
02:54That's what I'm saying. Why are you judging her? For what?
02:56What did she do?
02:57I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to make these comments,
03:01meaning if you're pro and empower women, that means you're anti-man,
03:10and that's a problem, and they will deal.
03:14They'll be fine.
03:16I hope to work on my confidence,
03:20and I hope to see what others see in me.
03:24I know that takes a lot of therapy,
03:26and it will take a lot of reflection on my behalf, on my life,
03:31but I know that it's possible.
03:32I think a lot of the times I see myself in my work,
03:39and when I see, you know, like a great,
03:42I just made a great playlist, and it makes me so happy.
03:56I'm grateful for everybody that supported me,
03:59and everybody that speaks power behind my name,
04:02and trusts me with my work,
04:06and that's all I would want, period.
04:09I don't want the accolades.
04:11I don't want you to celebrate me as a person,
04:14even though I think I use me.
04:17I use me as an example.
04:20You know, I try to make sure that I give so much to people,
04:25especially, you know, I show how transparent I am
04:28with my past and my life,
04:30that I hope that it helps somebody else,
04:33and hope that they feel seen.
04:35It's important for me to build some kind of path or door
04:41where people can feel seen, because I know what that's like,
04:44to basically say, scream, you know, do all these things.
04:49and still feel invisible.
04:51I know what that feels like.
04:53Learning from black women, speaking to black women,
04:55speaking to black people, loving blackness,
04:58which also turns into loving myself and, you know,
05:01and getting there, you know, finding that journey is a long-ass journey,
05:08but it's worth it.
05:12I just hope that the work is seen.
05:15Just make sure the work is seen,
05:17and that's what's the most important thing.
05:19I just, I just want it to be seen, and that's all.
05:23Take care.
05:29So,
05:30I just want it to be heard, here's the last few years.
05:31Wait a second.
05:32I want to hear it.
05:33homepage.
05:35A special speaker is also the first one.
05:37So,
05:38I'm going to have questions,
05:39and I'm going to have a story.
05:40I'm going to have a story.
05:42I'm going to be looking at a story.
05:43Bye.
05:44Bye.
05:45Bye.
05:46Bye.
05:47Bye.
05:48Bye.
05:49Bye.
05:50Well,
05:51bye.
