The Four Finalist talks to ESSENCE about her new found fame and what next!
Transcript
00:00My name is Leah Janae, I'm 18 years old, and I'm a professional singer-songwriter.
00:05People may have heard of me from The Four on Fox.
00:16My life has been so much different and crazy since before.
00:20Before I could walk down the streets and be fine, no one's able to say anything,
00:25and now it's like this bum rush of people like,
00:28oh my gosh, it's just crazy because I'm at home, I'm supposed to be normal at home.
00:34But it's all love all the time, so it makes me happy to have that change, but I'm still adjusting to it.
00:43It was cool working with the stylists on the show.
00:46It was a collaborative thing, always felt like myself in their clothes.
00:51They listened to me, especially because the first outfit that I wore for my first episode,
00:56my grandma actually bought me and we styled together.
00:59So I was like, grandma has to like this, you know?
01:02I would send her pictures, I would FaceTime her, and they were just like,
01:05oh yeah, we have to make sure grandma likes this.
01:08It was amazing learning from Diddy, Megan, and Khaled.
01:11At first it's surreal, but then after a while you start to notice they're normal people,
01:16they make mistakes, but they're very smart and they're very educated on, you know, what they do.
01:21So it's always a pleasure getting feedback from them.
01:24The advice that Megan gave me was to just be myself, stay in my lane, and continue songwriting.
01:32Khaled, you know, he just, he really always just compared me to greats and was just like,
01:36keep that sound.
01:37And Diddy always just told me, you know, you're perfectly imperfect, you know,
01:42which is crazy that he told me that because I have a single called Perfectly Imperfect.
01:46So I was like, yeah, you know what I'm trying to do.
01:50Oh my goodness, what's next?
01:52That is the golden question.
01:54I already actually have an album out.
01:56It's called Life Water that I did actually independently.
01:59I want to do another album like that, you know, on a better scale.
02:03I'm a lot older, I've seen more things.
02:05Definitely a tour, that's going to come soon.
02:09And just make sure that I'm giving the people what they want, which is music, as soon as possible.
02:13Music's, you know, the universal language.
02:16Singing is the most unselfish thing in the world.
02:19So when I sing, I just hope that they feel one with me and reflective on the song and the lyrics.
02:26This is who I am, I am what you see.
02:28I may be imperfect, but I'm perfectly imperfect me.
02:34This is who I am, I am what you see.
02:38I may be imperfect, but I'm perfectly imperfect me.
02:43This is who I am, I am what you see.
02:57This is who I am, I am what you see.
02:59I may be imperfect, but I'm perfectly imperfect me.
03:05This is who I am, I am what you see.
03:07This is who I am, I am what you see.
03:10This is who I am, I am what you see.
03:14This is who I am, I am what you see.
