00:00Hello and welcome to another episode of Shop Essence Live in partnership with New Voices
00:06Family. Today we have a super special episode for you guys because this is brought to you by
00:12The Next Black Millionaire that is powered by Shea Moisture. Now this is a really, really
00:18special program. Next Black Millionaire's fund equips three Black entrepreneurs with mentorship,
00:25timely advice, and a grant for a hundred thousand dollars for them to help scale their business and
00:32achieve their dreams. Today we're going to be joined by all three winners. I want you guys to
00:37welcome Neil Hudson of Scotch Boys. We got Dory and Morris of Undefined Beauty. What's going on?
00:45Latoya Syrup of Cosmology. Hey y'all. Hey Noni. Hey. Hello. This feels so full circle. You guys
00:55are Shop Essence Live alum. So we have shopped with you guys before. We have seen you guys scale. We
01:01have seen you guys you know go from being on Shop Essence Live and some of you are in Target. All of
01:06you are in Target actually which we're going to get to in a little bit. First I want you guys to just
01:11introduce yourselves to the Pinterest TV audience and let us know what sets you guys your products
01:18apart from what is in the market. Latoya I'm going to start with you. Take it away. Absolutely. So
01:26hello Essence family. I'm Latoya Syrup, co-founder of Cosmology and it's a company that I started with
01:32my two sisters to create innovative hair tools and accessories for textured hair. So what sets us apart
01:39is that with our Curls Plus detanglers we design our hair tools to be sturdy, multifunctional, and then
01:46they also feature teeth that mimic your fingers. So you get that gentle easy detangling experience
01:51with our hair tools because we designed them for textured hair. Come on. I mean she does sound like
01:58she has done this before y'all. Can I just tell you I have this everybody in my house uses Cosmology
02:05combs and pick products. We have all different kinds of textures in my house. My five-year-old
02:11has you know very very curly hair and it's hard detangling in these streets y'all and Latoya has
02:17taken care of us so I can personally vouch for it. So up next Dorian Morris, Undefined Beauty.
02:25Hello, hello Essence family. My name is Dorian. I'm the founder and CEO of Undefined Beauty which
02:31is clean, conscious, inclusive plant magic. My mission is to democratize beauty and demystify
02:37amazing plant-based solutions but with a fun unapologetic approach. So four core pillars,
02:43clean, clinical meaning I take ancient plant wisdom and I pair with clinically proven active so you're
02:48not compromising on performance. Conscious, conscious capitalism is one of my core pillars which means
02:54across my entire supply chain I partner with female-founded, minority-owned, LGBTQ and small
02:59business because business empowers business. Inclusive, all of my products as you see behind me
03:04they have diverse illustrations that tie back to the ingredient story or the end benefit and plant
03:09magic. Everything's about the amazing plant wisdom and bringing that to the forefront so we can look
03:15and feel our best. Oh so good! All right so Undefined Beauty as well heavy in my bathroom like this.
03:23The R&R Day Syrup Dorian is like completely gone because I used it a lot and when I tell you this product
03:32right here is such a game changer. Black girls we know about the struggle of putting on sunscreen
03:37and it making us look ashy but Dorian was like uh-uh no this R&R Day Sun Serum is incredible and she has
03:46a ton of products that's available. You'll see them pinned to this broadcast right here so you can shop
03:51right here or you can go to Target. We'll talk about that in a little bit but they're also featured
03:56in Target for a very very special special display that they have. So last but not least Neil of Scotch
04:03Boys come on in tell us about your business and what sets your products apart. Hi uh hi Noni great to see
04:12you again. Hey Latoya and Dorian. So I'm Neil Hudson I'm one of the four co-founders of Scotch Boys
04:18based in Atlanta but Scotch Boys is a sauce and seasonings brand. We're buying the freshest ingredients
04:24from over 200 small farmers in Jamaica making sure that we're bringing in the authentic flavors of
04:30Jamaica to you being in Target. What makes Scotch Boys special? It's our friendship, it's our heritage
04:37and it's our unique flavor that really captures the essence of the Caribbean and bringing it to a
04:41doorstep near you. So good. Now first of all these have me feeling like I can really really cook
04:50authentic Jamaican cuisine. Neil has taken care of us and his partners have taken care. What's up Drew?
04:55What's up all the other partners? Um this is just so I am from Queens, New York and we are very very
05:04picky when it comes to having authentic Jamaican cuisine. Sometimes you go to a restaurant and it
05:08says it's jerk chicken but the jerk is just not jerking for some reason. Neil has a little jerk chicken at home
05:15which is incredible and I also don't want to skip over Neil a really important um feature that your
05:21products have when you buy these you are contributing to farmers in your homeland which is Jamaica which is
05:28really really incredible. Can you say a little bit about that as well? Sure so everything that goes
05:34into the Scotch Boys bottle is sourced from Jamaican farmers everything besides the glass bottle so we're
05:39ensuring that we're paying a premium for ingredients not only peppers but the onions the all spice everything
05:45that goes into the bottle so we're helping the local community so not only are we supporting the
05:49farmers directly by paying a premium for our ingredients the profits that we're making we're
05:55giving back to a few local schools in Jamaica so I hope you've watched the Roku Next Black Millionaire
06:01series now but one of the schools is prominently highlighted our Saint Paul's primary where we've
06:07helped them with construction projects and we've done our donations there and another school that we
06:12support is the South Lamar primary where during the pandemic you bought tablets and we're still
06:16continuing to support them to to this day so we want to make sure that from we're bringing you from
06:22farm to bottle but every every purchase from the bottle goes right back to the farmers who support us
06:27and who make this these flavors and this product possible so good so Neil that is perfect because we have
06:36to talk about Shea Moisture's The Next Black Millionaires now this is a really incredible program you guys we're
06:43getting a peek behind the curtain of what it is like for real for real to be an entrepreneur you can see
06:49it for free right now on Roku and that's what I really want to dive into um can you each tell us
06:54what it was like when you found out that you were selected to be a part of this incredible program
07:00LaToya I'll start with you absolutely when we found out that we were selected to be a part of the next
07:07Black Millionaires program by Shea Moisture I was elated because as a fellow hair care brand I mean
07:16there it just doesn't get any better than that to be able to go under the tutelage of the team at
07:21Shea Moisture connected to Unilever and the minds of Rich and Cara I mean these are people who have lived
07:28in the space that we're growing in so the mentorship alone I was like I'm sold I'm so excited it was it
07:35was a dream come true literally so good and it's so well produced shout out to the team that put it
07:41together like you're really I think uh now the the job of an entrepreneur is very romanticized like we
07:50think of it we see it on Instagram and we think of it like oh I can make my own hours and be driving a
07:56uh my Bach or something like that and it's just like you really see the sweat equity that you all
08:01put into your businesses and what it's like to balance that in your life um Dorian can you talk
08:07a little bit about your experience of when you found out and what was like being a part of the program
08:12yeah so when I found out I was to the same point that LaToya made super excited really for the level of
08:19resources they were bringing to the table the mentorship also just the relationship building with LaToya
08:25Neil I feel like we started off with strangers and through the whole program I look at them as
08:30family so that's also been I think a really important piece of this because I'm a strong believer that iron
08:35sharpens iron and so we're constantly uplifting and helping each other kind of win within this
08:41crazy space that we're all playing in so good Neil how about you uh so you know when I did the
08:50application I made it it was three rounds and I made it to the final round and we were supposed to
08:55hear by you know sometime in March so I was refreshing my email checking my spam folder several times a day
09:05every day so on the last day of March you know when I didn't see anything at five o'clock you know I called
09:10the team and I said guys that's it uh in spite of our best efforts I guess we we didn't win and actually
09:16we had to um do a background check before uh and I said you know maybe hey maybe one of these guys
09:23you know one of the guys stole a stop sign once I was like oh my god they caught that on camera so
09:27maybe they found that out so it's why we didn't win but when I found out we won I was thrilled the
09:31email came in at 6.02 p.m. I called the guys I thought I was pranking them we were so thrilled to
09:36be a part of this program uh you know even during the application I said then and I'll say it again I want
09:41scotch boys to be the shea moisture of sauce I want people to think of hot sauce
09:48I want people to think of hot sauce the first thing they think of is scotch boys and shea moisture
09:53has given us that platform um you know and even and it's just unbelievable access uh and I'll share
10:01you with you not only that uh Dorian said iron sharpens iron but I don't know if I was iron before
10:06I got here but thanks to Dorian thanks to Latoya thanks to Cara everyone at new voices Marie I have
10:13absolutely become sharper and it's been a unbelievable experience so far I'm so thrilled to be a part of
10:20this this family I love that and I always love seeing just the community and the camaraderie amongst
10:27entrepreneurs especially in the new voices family Barry bring everybody in so I can talk to everybody
10:33thank you um so speaking of new voices you guys are all a part of the new voices family so you all
10:41down at essence festival um killing it in the game and then you were our first guest when we relaunched
10:47with new voices can you speak a little bit about that um community and what it's been like being a part
10:54of new voices family Latoya oh my goodness when I tell you the new voices family takes care of family
11:02um just the accessibility to resources we can email Marie Richelina with a question and then they come
11:10back to us immediately with answers and or people that we can tap into to get help and assistance and
11:16they want to see us win and it's the support it's the love it's the care that they pour into us and you
11:22know it comes from a genuine place because they do it with the sweat and the the same like intensity that
11:29we're going about building our brands they give it right back to us through support and resources
11:33oh I love love love that Dorian how's it been for you yeah I mean they've been amazing again they're
11:40like family to me now as well um I think what makes their platform so powerful is that they've been in
11:47our shoes so they've actually been through this before and so we're really getting all of that wisdom
11:52that like institutionalized knowledge and you know know-how that they're imparting to us so I
11:58think that's been extremely valuable so good Neil
12:04so when you look at the long arc of history I think you'd say I think like us as black people
12:09we're somewhat new to commerce and everyone in the new voices family is taking us under their wing
12:19you know has offered me advice uh I'll tell you again um a couple Fridays ago Richie Lou Dennis
12:25himself called me versus asked me how's the program how's the target end caps going and I was like
12:31hey I guess this is how I'm spending my Friday afternoons you know one of the richest people in
12:35America is giving me a phone call so I absolutely absolutely love it when I walk into stores and I
12:41see other brands that are in the new voices family I can't believe that I've not only met them
12:47but I could say that I know them so it's a great experience and what I love about it is that we
12:53have a mandate that we should all share that knowledge and actually work together to ensure
12:59that we're all successful so uh it's been a thrilling experience and what I want to take from
13:05this is paid forward as well so I guess getting a little additional exposure a lot of people have
13:09been calling me at different stages of their journey and I'm just happy to give them to be a conduit for
13:16the information that was given to me by new voices I'm in turn passing it on so I love everything
13:20about new voices family this is so good and then you mentioned um just having that not everybody has
13:29a direct line to Richie Lou Dennis or somebody like that you know so being a part of the Shea Moisture
13:35next black millionaires as well as new voices all of these incredible programs that are available to
13:41black entrepreneurs it is just priceless and I was watching on Roku which is uh free and available for
13:47you guys to watch right now um and one of the things I love that Rich was talking about is what
13:53you said Neil is paying it forward once you make it and then that money goes back to the fund and then
13:58being able to you know maybe it's not three entrepreneurs maybe it's seven the next time because
14:03of what you guys were able to achieve was so so impactful can you guys talk about throughout this
14:09program which if you watch you guys are basically getting the advice if you're an entrepreneur and
14:14you're at home no matter where you are in your business this is you have to watch this program
14:20because you're literally going through the mentorship with these great entrepreneurs and learning what
14:25they're learning along the way can you guys each talk about the best piece of advice that you got while
14:32going through the program Latoya yes no so throughout the whole program I mean you just have a six second
14:41conversation with rich and he's dropping gems but one of the things that really played well for us
14:47and it was a commonality between the three of us was around the concept of focus because a lot of times
14:53as entrepreneurs and indie brands right we're trying to like solve for and service a lot of different
14:59needs you have buyers who are like where's your newness you have customers that are like where's
15:03the newness what's your next thing what are you doing where's the innovation and we sometimes feel
15:09like we have to fill these gaps all at once but one thing especially for us rich was like you need to
15:15focus you need to really own your space and then begin to branch out how can you go really deep before
15:21you go wide and that was really key because as as indie founders our pockets are limited right our
15:28resources are limited so how can we really deliver the most impact in the most efficient way and that's
15:34through focus so that was a really good sort of thought for us to take back and to take it to the
15:40team that's so good and every time i hear any kind of advice towards entrepreneurship it's always advice
15:48you can apply to anything right no matter if you're an entrepreneur or not like we all our lives are just
15:54so multifaceted we don't know where to put our energy at first so i think that that's a really
16:00really solid advice dorian what would you say your favorite piece of advice is well i feel like latoya
16:06stole mine it was also focused um because i am a product junkie like i live and breathe ingredients
16:13and products and i'm always like in my kitchen ideating on how i can solve you know pinch points within
16:18my community but do that with a plant forward approach um and so yeah a lot of rich's advice
16:24was around uh focus don't try and boil the ocean um and really tackle each individual challenge at a
16:35time because i feel like as entrepreneurs like we have all these balls up in the air at any given moment
16:40and so really thinking strategically about your time boundaries prioritization um are really important
16:48and then through this journey for me which is a little bit different than latoya neil i'm a solo
16:52founder and i don't have a team so a big piece of my journey that was shown through next black millionaire
16:57is the struggles of how do you onboard people how do you fire people how do you think strategically about
17:05building out a team um so i've been in business for almost five years and so i've been doing this
17:09myself for five years which is insane and i was like dorian how yeah i like to say i'm a robot i
17:18guess but one learning for me is that if i'm giving too much to the business what does that sacrifice
17:25mean for me personally dorian as a person so that's been a big piece of i think what this pro this this
17:31initiative or program or whatever you want to call it it's really given me that pause to say hey i could
17:37be building something magical but if i'm sacrificing myself is it really as magical as i think it is and
17:44so it's given me a lot of pause and a lot of time to reflection about how to build smartly um and really
17:50building balance kind of into the equation yeah that is whoa gems being dropped as usual on shop essence live
17:59neil going to you for your favorite piece of advice that you've got during the program
18:03so one of the things that um really stood out to me from the program was um actually said by um
18:09thinky cole she said that in order to grow her business she had to step outside of the business
18:15and you know the day that you know the 2000 cases of uh sauce got to target for first run who's
18:23standing in the warehouse me you know we had another order that we're setting off to another retailer
18:28and there i am making sure that they're labeling it properly and you know some days i just get bogged
18:32down an email but i don't think that is a true value add that doesn't grow the business i want to be
18:38more visible working on partnership stepping outside from behind the computer i mean the face of the
18:42business but luckily i've always said this i've said it before i'll say it again i have a great team
18:48i wouldn't be here without the contributions of drew who's my right-hand partner matthew uh and kemar you
18:55know they were all instrumental in helping me get to this stage but what also came out in the
19:01documentary is we do need a team so what got us here won't get us to the next step so we're
19:06conscious of that and we're working towards achieving our goals and really scaling scotch boys
19:13within our given um you know abilities but also being cognizant of our limitations and where we
19:18might need to actually hire to get scotch boys to the next level oh this is so so good if you guys are
19:25just tuning in this is shop essence live in partnership with new voices family this is a
19:30very special episode brought to you by the next black millionaire that is prior next black millionaires
19:36because we got three on here that is powered by shea moisture um this program it is so incredible
19:44available right now for free on roku if you are an entrepreneur it is a really really important program
19:51for you guys to watch you get tons of gems from it there is also like reality tea like watching you
19:58guys's lives i still have to finish it but we're in the middle of dorian trying to find somebody to
20:04to hire that cares about her business as much as she does we're in the middle of a pepper shortage
20:09for the scotch boys in jamaica like they gotta fulfill these skills and then cosmology some big
20:15company is trying to steal their brush their comb like what's going on this is a lot going on y'all
20:20so make sure that you go and watch it is available right right now it is really really really good put
20:27it all while you're detangling your hair for wash day or you're making some scotch boys like jerk chicken
20:33or you're doing your beauty routine with undefined beauty okay because it is really really good um so
20:40that's kind of it but i think we have a little bit of time what i love to do um and i do need to plug
20:48you can get this at target.com that all the products are pinned here but if you want to go if you're like
20:53me and you love like a trip to target target is my happy place this is what i always say i always spend
20:58more money than i plan to but they have a display at target it is in the beauty section and neil we got
21:05to talk about the hot sauce being so hot that it's in the beauty section i'd love to know from you neil
21:11what has the reaction been like for scotch boys with their hot sauce in the beauty aisle what's going
21:19well um well scotch boys is named from um the scotch bonnet pepper so someone made a comment maybe they
21:26saw bonnet and got confused which is why they put it there but um but it's it's intentional again
21:34you getting into retail in and of itself is a major hurdle and then we are all within our specific
21:42areas so we are disparate businesses in different sections but they put us all together because we're
21:47all winners of the next black millionaire program so being in the beauty aisle is intentional because
21:52i'm the ugly one and dorian and latoya already have products that sit well there so it's a cross
21:59like what are you talking about right it's a it's a cross merchandise end cap so it's intentional it's
22:06designed to give us exposure um those comments weren't lost upon me but i think when people understand
22:12why it's there then i think they they they get it and the support actually has uh been good uh not only
22:18from an awareness standpoint but um sales have been good so far and our ask is support the program support
22:26the end caps show target that this program was worth its while show roku that it's uh this program
22:33kind of highlight black entrepreneurship so that it can be a next black millionaire volume two and volume
22:38three for additional cohorts so it's been great exposure and uh you know not only do we make good
22:45chicken you know why are you getting some undefined and some uh cosmology you know get some hot pepper
22:51sauce you can make up bloody mary come on listen come on that is so great and you made such an
22:57important point it is so important for us to support programs like this it is so important for us to buy
23:04products like this because then you do show big corporations that number one the black audience
23:11we want these products we need these products but then for black entrepreneurs they have viable
23:15businesses that can scale massively i want to highlight these beautiful look at these beautiful
23:21photos so when you guys go to um target and see these beautiful displays with their beautiful photos
23:29you can see who's behind the brands um make sure that you pick them up and you purchase them all
23:35i think we have a little bit of time shop essence live is traditionally a shopping show so i'd love for
23:41you all to go through just each of your products just hold them up talk a little bit about them i'll
23:45pin them neil i'm going to start with you and then just you know talk through your products everybody at
23:50home put them save them pin them purchase them target.com we'll put them up right here neil why don't
23:56you take it away and just take through all your products so our uh let me start our flagship is the
24:03scotch one it's also let me start with our red sauce so uh how i know that this is actually a good
24:08tasting sauce is we're at essence festa a few weeks ago we had a booth obviously essence is in new
24:13orleans louisiana they're the content they're the national connoisseurs of hot sauce and they said
24:21that um they won't buy any other hot sauce that you know this beats everything that they ever had
24:27so this is actually leading in the sales our hot pepper sauce it's made with west indian red it's great
24:32to make buffalo wings it uh it's our most versatile sauce as i said earlier you can use it as a bloody
24:37mary uh tried and choose jerk that's a jamaican staple i have some wings here in the air fryer just
24:44baste a little bit on your wings or you can use it as a marinade and it takes you straight to the
24:49islands and from where we get our name the scotch bonnet sauce it's so named because the pepper
24:56uh was said to look like a scotsman bonnet or scotsman's hat this is our hottest sauce but it actually
25:02packs a very good flavor it's sweet with quite a bit of heat and add this to a barbecue sauce have
25:09it on your own so these are the three that are available in target and these are the three that
25:13you see on the end caps as well that is wild neil that the scotch bonnet pepper sauce is the hottest
25:22one it's my favorite and i am not a spicy lover but the scotch bonnet pepper sauce got me in a choke
25:29hole that is that's okay um so dorian oh you're up next just review and you have some new products to
25:37debut um let us know all the products i'll go quickly so the products that you can find on the end cap
25:45it's in 600 stores go support you'll find my cleanser it's a three-in-one it cleanses it tones you can
25:51also use it as a mask there is my day serum which is a brightening hyperpigmentation fighter it's got
25:58vitamin c alfarbutin cojic acid a lot of amazing tyrosinase inhibitors so great for fighting
26:02hyperpigmentation and brightening your skin there is the night serum which is a buccuccio based
26:08formula it is an oil and serum format so great for really nourishing and repairing the skin overnight
26:14there is a gel cream moisturizer which is a super lightweight moisturizer it's infused with
26:20ceramides and peptides and my best-selling product is my sun serum it is a tinted mineral spf 50 pa plus
26:29plus plus plus so the highest rating you can get on the uva factor it is tinted it is meant to work
26:34across a broad range of skin tones between us it was built for the melanated skin um but for those that
26:42maybe have lighter skin i have a lighter version that's launching in a couple of weeks and for those
26:46with deeper skin i also have a deeper version so stay tuned for that and the two new products that
26:51just launched on target.com are my hydra jelly which is a really fun face and eye serum it is a
26:59super it's peptide infused it's really great for hydrating the skin but also firming specifically
27:04under your eyes and then my newest product is sudden creme this is a basically a superfood smoothie for
27:12your skin it's an spf 50 but it's a moisturizer so it kind of does three in one it gives you the
27:17reparative serum it's also your moisturizer and sun protection all in one and this one is untinted so it
27:25is kind of a really thick juicy cream and it works across skin tones
27:33to blend without a white cast and super hydrating so great for those that have dry skin
27:39that magic did you see the magic of the discipline that was that was incredible so thank you for that
27:51dorian and then last but not least latoya of cosmology what you got yes so at the end cap you will see
28:01our signature cobalt blue hair tools featuring our curls plus pick which is compact in size you see it
28:08doesn't have the traditional handle like a pick so it's perfect for your purse your book bag your baby
28:12bag for all the moms and then it is just great to add volume without the frizz because again it features
28:19our wide thick conical shaped teeth so you get in there give yourself some volume and don't have to
28:26worry about fully disrupting your curls it also features our curls plus comb that has a sectioning tip
28:32on the end so you can section part and style and detangle all with one hair tool we have a couple
28:38of different ways to grip it you could grip it at the top you grip it right here listen we built it
