00:00Come ti senti a scrivere i filmi?
00:03I normally get a script and you flick through it and go, where am I?
00:07And then I found myself reading all the other scenes in this as well,
00:10which is a compliment I suppose.
00:13No, it's an incredibly rich fabric of scenes.
00:18There's like 18 main characters really.
00:21There's no one sort of principal role.
00:23Everyone's got their moment and their little storylines weaving around.
00:29And each scene complements the other.
00:32You've got a scene that perhaps happens upstairs and then you've got the almost
00:36the sort of downstairs press the red button punditry from downstairs,
00:41having just witnessed what's just happened or discussing what's going on in the house.
00:47I thought it was fantastic.
00:49I remember reading it.
00:51It was the first time that I'd read anything good in a while.
00:55I'll be honest.
00:56And it was one, like Dan said, I read from back to front.
01:01Just couldn't stop reading it.
01:02Came off the page.
01:03And in rehearsals with Brian Percival, who directs the first episode,
01:08he was kind of, it's just one of them.
01:09It's so well written that you don't have to try and bring anything to the words.
01:13Just say them and it'll come out.
01:15The scenes will work because it's so beautifully written.
01:18And he's got a tremendous economy in his writing.
01:20You know, like Dan mentioned, there's 18, like, principal cast members,
01:25not including guests who come into each episode.
01:26Yet he tells, he manages to tell pretty much all their stories in each episode.
01:30And he's only got one hour.
01:32And to do that and to do it well, which he does, I mean, it's just unbelievable.
01:38I think really what's interesting about this is that the Isabel character and the Matthew are actually the future
01:46because they're the sort of rising upper middle class or middle class, which is,
01:51because so they're getting away from this sort of rather more paternalistic view of the big man in his cult
01:58feudal in his castle, the poor man in his thing.
02:01And there's a sort of, there's a sort of a very educated middle class because my son is a lawyer,
02:08a solicitor.
02:09And I was a nurse in the Boer War and my husband.
02:12She goes on and on about that.
02:13Yes, I know.
02:15Infinitum.
02:17And I'm very cross with Mrs. Crawley and her son because I feel they're kind of going to get away
02:25with the estate
02:27and with lots and lots of money.
02:32Well, I think Mary feels an incredible amount of responsibility being the eldest
02:41and marrying the right, I mean, really her whole, I guess, her whole purpose is finding a husband,
02:53which I think for all of the sisters, for all the girls, that's really what we're, what our purpose in
03:02life is, to find the right man.
03:05And so throughout, throughout each episode, various suitors turn up.
03:10And Mary, she's incredibly stubborn.
03:13So if, if, if someone is chosen for her as a potential suitor, she'll, she'll kind of fight against it
03:23just to make a point that it wasn't her, her decision.
03:27Um, and I think her relationship with Matthew is, is, is brilliant because there, though she's so reluctant to fall
03:38for him,
03:39I think as it goes on, there is definite sparks flying between them.
03:44It's like a love-hate relationship, you know.
03:46It's a mixture, well, it depends on the character, really.
03:49Obviously, everyone's got different views.
03:50For my character, there isn't at all.
03:53She's, um, she's kind of a genuine, honest, nice girl that, she, she's kind of happy to be where she
04:00is.
04:00She's got a very good position, really, being head housemaid at her age.
04:04So, I think she's, um, she's quite fortunate to be where she is in life.
04:10There is that kind of animosity or anything.
04:12But, uh, I think she's not the same thing.
04:12So, I'm not.
04:12Two things.
04:12So, one thing.
