00:00.
00:02Right before the pandemic started,
00:04one of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward's kids
00:06approached me
00:08to direct a documentary
00:09about Paul and Joanne.
00:12Paul had begun
00:13working on a memoir.
00:16They did over 100 interviews.
00:17He said to him, tell the truth.
00:20Stuff they would never say
00:21if they weren't with friends.
00:24What happened to these tapes?
00:26He poured gasoline on them and lit them on fire.
00:29Wow.
00:30Except they had had them all transcribed.
00:32I'm trying to turn it into kind of like a play
00:34with voices. A community looking back.
00:38Laura Linney's gonna do Joanne Woodward.
00:40George Clooney agreed to read
00:42Paul.
00:51My meeting with Joanne gave birth to a sexual
00:54being.
00:55Long live our life.
00:56I am simply a creature of her invention.
00:59Long live our life.
01:00When they first married, she just won the Oscar.
01:03She's the star.
01:04But we're just beautiful people
01:06with beautiful problems.
01:10And then the trajectory
01:11just changed.
01:12Beautiful problems.
01:16Nobody understands anybody else's relationships.
01:20Only the two people who are involved
01:22know what binds that relationship together.
01:25We gotta walk through fire.
01:29As in all things,
01:31you can do anything you want to
01:33if you're willing to pay the price.
01:35Beautiful people
01:37with beautiful problems.
01:41Beautiful.
01:43Beautiful.
01:46What?
01:47I'll tell you something very funny,
01:48but you have to turn the tape off.
01:50You have to turn the tape off.
02:03You have to turn the tape off.
02:04And now you have to turn the tape off.
02:04You have to turn the tape off.
02:04And then you have to turn the tape off?
