00:00what do they there's a word for it's uh it's masturbation
00:02and speaking about this show yeah and
00:20hi hi nice to meet you so carl you say in third season that popularity is power what
00:29kind of power is popularity in your opinion can be dangerous like in the show well for me you know
00:36playing butcher the kind of power that butcher has which i think is probably one of the most
00:42dangerous kinds of power in the world is the uh the power and the ability to manipulate others
00:49into doing what you want them to do um and i mean you know uh in terms of if you
00:55think about
00:56perhaps uh politicians or you know whoever else is is a is an influencer and and has that kind of
01:04power to get people to do what they want them to do it can be a dangerous weapon and certainly
01:08in
01:08butch's case um you know he has the power and ability to convince you know the members the
01:16boys to go along with any harebrained scheme and um you know and and it's dangerous because
01:22you know nine times out of ten uh it goes sideways and ends badly for everybody do you agree uh
01:29yeah i mean it's ultimate power should never be had i i think we're i think we we're seeing examples
01:35of that in in our real world say that when we think about superheroes we think about good superheroes
01:42because um we hope that they will use their power for the greater good instead in this tv show
01:49uh the heroes are almost like villains so in your opinion to you both uh what makes a villain uh
01:57i mean i i think it's touching on what girl just said uh using your power uh to to skew
02:04things to your
02:05to bend people or to bend things to uh to what you want it to be and uh ultimately that's
02:12just
02:12self-serving and and probably not for the greater good um so especially if you're putting people's
02:19lives at risk uh to get what you want then that's i mean that that's evil and and you what
02:24do you think
02:25what do i think the definition of a villain is i think that it's anybody who um intentionally seeks
02:32out to maliciously harm anyone or anything um um yeah that to me that's that's the definition of a
02:41villain we could say that two villains in this tv show are um racism and toxic masculinity uh are you
02:52proud of being part of a tv show that could make think people about these two huge problems are you
03:01glad
03:01of being part of a show that can help the conversation yeah i think that that is one of the
03:05real
03:06strengths about what uh eric kripke does in the writing of this show he uses this template and formula
03:14and setting of the boys to explore you know existential issues that are current and relevant um to
03:23to to our society and um you know and for us in a in a way to have a a
03:31a non-confrontational look um at
03:37at these things and uh you know it's just a mark of great writing and it's the same sort of
03:42mechanism
03:42thing that a writer like roddenberry was doing you know back in the 60s um and um yeah and also
03:49of course
03:50because the genre is satire it um you know it's uh it's uh it sort of taps into the zeitgeist
03:57of
03:57what's going on yeah it lends itself to being a canvas to which you can you can talk about those
04:03kinds of things and you can you can poke at those things and and uh and and make uh you
04:08know not make
04:09light of them but certainly pull the pull the covers off pull the curtain back we we see that uh
04:15the
04:15soups are really into uh self-branding self-branding is uh is so so used in in the last few
04:23years um
04:25that too can can lead to a dark side self-branding so how how can we um uh maintain a
04:33balance between
04:34self-promotion and and and going crazy well personally i believe that um you know the difference is
04:42you know when you have promotion to promote uh a project or something or a cause that you care
04:49about then then it's used in some sort of an altruistic fashion then uh we're used to draw
04:57attention to an issue that can greatly benefit from that attention then that's a good thing
05:01but obviously you know self-promotion for the sake of it uh is a pretty slippery slope
05:07yeah it's it's it's it's promoting for a greater good or promoting for your good yeah and i think
05:12that's uh if if you're doing things that benefit others uh and doing you know keeping up a brand or
05:22keeping up uh of you know some sort of a presence to shed light on on certain subjects or charitable
05:30uh aspirations then that is uh then then that's that that's good that's doing good and that's i
05:37think uh the the bright side of that but when it's all self-serving that can be a slippery slope
05:44that
05:44can lead to a dark place when you're the person that's just doing a disservice yourself then it's
05:48you know it's just uh what are they there's a word for it's uh it's masturbation
05:56and speaking about this show yeah and jensen um you you had superpowers also in dark angel then
06:05supernatural now soldier boy why you can be just a regular guy in tv shows and movies why why are
06:15you
06:15so fascinated by uh extraordinary guys because i'm basic and normal in real life so why would i want to
06:22play the oh no i had the opportunity to be something super that's what i'd want to be
06:29uh you know it's i i look i think it's one of the reasons why i really enjoy what i
06:34do as a job uh
06:35is is because i get to tell stories and i get to to play in these fantastic worlds with these
06:41fantastic
06:41characters um and and it is an escape from reality um i think that's a large part of why people
06:49like to
06:49watch it and it's certainly a large part of why i enjoy doing it um you know i i respect
06:55those normal
06:56characters and those slice of life type of uh of filmmaking but uh i just i keep getting drawn to
07:04these kinds of worlds and these kinds of characters and i'm totally fine with it speaking about genre i i
07:09really want to see uh the boys musical because we we've seen that some of you can sing so first
07:19of all i want the boys the musical and then if you could choose a musical number what would you
07:26do
07:26both of you what would you do in the boys
07:32a musical number like from some contemporary show musical that we've seen whatever you want yeah
07:41uh jet a song whatever you want the the boys doing when you're a jet that's uh
07:49that could that could play um yeah i don't know kripke's always he's always threatened a musical uh
07:56uh iteration of some sort yeah uh in all of his shows i think i don't think he's ever delivered
08:02though yeah nobody delivers in this season there is musical component in this season there is um which
08:07is you know a new interesting fun dynamic addition to the show but also um actually jensen does get to
08:15do a couple of musical numbers but real in the show that's true and you what do you want to
08:22do
08:23you you you didn't answer i'm curious because i really have by design zero interest in doing
08:30anything musical because if you've actually ever heard me sing uh yeah best left that one
08:39this tv show really uh doesn't give so much hope because media are corrupted social media are
08:46corrupted super heroes are corrupted um companies every everybody yeah so uh can we still have hope
08:55in in who can we trust where's the truth are you just talking like existentially like in life who we
09:03can yeah yeah because you you are not giving us so much hope in this tv show in this i
09:09think one of the
09:10the the the great things that kripke does is that he presents his characters with a moral dilemma and
09:16some of the characters in the show make the right choice and are rewarded and some of the characters
09:20make the wrong choice and are punished and um you know in in doing so he is actually you know
09:27framing
09:28the moral dilemma and imparting you know little i guess lessons um in in uh in in life and uh
09:36you know i would
09:38i would strongly argue that there is hope in the show and it's it's represented in all sorts of
09:44characters in all sorts of ways and sometimes it's tiny little gestures or tiny little choices and
09:49other times it's you know rather large and magnanimous human spirit the triumph of human spirit in the
09:54face of adversity okay of toxic masculinity yeah
10:04soldier voice speaking yes okay thank you so much because you are amazing bye thank you
10:31so
10:38you
10:38you
